A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

My brother and I watched the show. We were sci-fi kids and we also appreciated cheepnis. My brother and his friends made were amateur filmmakers in the early 70s. I tagged along as a kid sister would. When they came over to watch TV at our apartment, it was like MST3K IRL. That's why I'm an immutable weirdo.

Oh, one of the friends went on to success in Hollywood. He wrote the screenplay for Midnight Run.

This is when I admit that it is not LIVE at this moment, but a recording of me performing live in the studio, at the end of 2019. It wasn't widely heard then, so it felt right to re-broadcast it.

It's pretty hard to do live on Sheena, while running the gear, and staying in the chat. I've tried it a couple times, and I'll try it again. But recording a live performance is a lot easier than playing live AND doing all the other stuff.

For this performance: I was using two CDJs, loaded with a thumbdrive full of mp3s. A Microgranny. A Kaospad. An iPad full of samples. A computer full of samples. A delay pedal, and a mixer.

Plus a bunch of cables and stuff.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

This is much more like the version of Mid-Valley Mutations that I started doing when I moved to Salem. Hour 1 was usually music (with some samples) as I would get the gear set up, and then Hour 2 was usually a live performance, either by a guest, myself, or a guest and myself. That has been the dominate form of show since then... but of course, I shake things up all the time, as people probably know.

Oh, yeah. In the lounge now I have a huge desk (that is motorized, so I can go from standing to sitting, or back again.) And, next to that, I have two tables: one at standing height, with a bunch of gear, and one a desk height, with some other gear. It's better than the couch / coffee table set-up, I would occasionally do.

Something very scary just happened. Doing research for the book I was editing, I copied and pasted a link for a page about foxes, and suddenly, my computer froze, then shut off completely

I'm sorry, Ellen. Did everything come back after you turned it back on?

Ellen Lovebug:

It *just* happened. I'm not sure yet. I have to see if I have to redo all the editing I was doing in MS Word

Good Luck, Ellen. Stuff like that is frustrating.

Over the past year I went through two AWFUL Amazon chairs that actually started causing back issues. If you look at Amazon there are no recognizable brand names. I like the executive style chairs because the mesh ergonomic ones are not cat friendly or durable. Problem with executive chairs being the shape is just soft foam that offers no support, the tilt mechanism is supported by a flimsy bar that lets your weight shift, and the piston is pneumatic which are trash.

Decided to give one of those silly car seat GaMiNg ChAiRs a shot since they stress ergonomic comfort. Razer just released a more affordable version of their flagship chair with all the features of a SecretLab (top of the line). It's the best chair I've ever sat on. All tilt angles have separate levers and mechanisms, and it has a class 4 hydraulic piston. Forces proper alignment while being comfortable enough to spend all day in.

Usually $400 but you can get it for a $50 off introductory price: www.bestbuy.com...

Good Idea, Mr. X. They'll get us out to somewhere fun, for sure.

I'm probably as skeptical of gaming chairs as you were, @HyperDose, but that's a genuine recommendation that I can't turn my nose up at. I mean, those gamers sit in those chairs all day long... I should consider it, for sure.

The included memory foam neck pillow was a big selling point for me. I also like how it's not too racer car-ish. Very premium stitching

When they have gaming chairs with a built in toilet and micro-fridge, you know we'll be one step closer to being floating brains.

That was very meditative

If I moved the UPS I could totally fit a mini-fridge under the desk. Hmm tempting...

I love the idea of Mutation Fest. I used to work the Med Tent at Autonomous Mutant Fest, thanks for that inadvertent memory

I could definitely try to prompt Chris to come up with something for me or pull up some lyrics from the past

nice background sounds as I was going thru the horrors of my record/CD/tape back room. I need an intern to come over and organize. Will give you college credit!

At the Eugene Major Hex show at John Henry's, Tethys is also playing, with whom I did a set as you recall at our Salem show, Austin. And Ariana with whom I performed as Dryad Drone is DJing a set. I'm going to pay to go but then listen from outside

I can’t believe I missed Codeine. That’s a throwback, Austin! Tried to get my kiddos to watch land of the lost. β€œMom, this is boring! The CGI is so bad!” ;) great set :)

You can always listen to the archive! But yeah, Codeine is the best.
