	👻 9:08pm Austin Rich: @Kat: I think Bob Bucko Jr. introduced me to Arvo's music, so I reached out, and he sent me a care package of his music and art. I've interviewed him a couple times since. Interesting chap; I played a show with him opening for Blevin Blectum on my first tour.

	👻 9:10pm Austin Rich: @Kat: I got to film Blevin twice when we both got to open for Negativland on the most recent West Coast tour. Blevin is SOOOO cool.
	👻 9:12pm Austin Rich: It's weird to listen to this conversation, and here horridus talk about playing a show while sick. We used to do stuff like that before the pandemic. It sounds insane to me now. He called the studio for this in 2017.
	👻 9:13pm Austin Rich: The phone is cutting out so much of the sound. We're only getting the high end.
	👻 9:14pm Austin Rich: I used to do a lot more stuff like this when I had a studio with a phone, and more actual gear. I've been meaning to outfit my studio with some device that can take calls / zoom chats / whatever, but I just haven't done it yet. Would love to get more live stuff like this going.

	9:21pm ramencity: They also played the "Man with NNN Fingers" song, cutting off a finger after each verse (spoiler alert - it was a glove w/ fake blood pods in it).

	👻 9:23pm Austin Rich: Sadly, I didn't get to see Negativland until the "It's All In Your Head Tour," in 2007? And they don't do any of the classic material. (I heard that the burning toast thing became unpopular, because it was so smelly and potentially dangerous. But crowds seemed to love it.)

	9:30pm Ellen Lovebug: I first met Mark Hosler in Portland at the End Corporate Dominance event during the Icky's era. I was hosting a War Resisters League show on Radio Free Cascadia! at the time, and he gave me a copy of The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2 for the station

	👻 9:32pm Austin Rich: @Ellen: at one show, they gave us sleep masks, so we could experience the "audio" better. (I still watched, as I'd never seen them before, and wanted to watch the gear Don was using.)

	9:36pm ramencity: (film loaded and ready to develop) -- @Mr X -- I consulted my spotty list of shows seen, and that is indeed the same Negativland show I saw! Funny, I thought it was more late 90s. My note says the openers were "Arlan, Vince and Robert from Onomatopoeia"

	9:39pm andrewBunny: I have an album by Aube that plays backwards like that, but on both sides. I got it from Anthem Records while I was living in Portland.
	9:39pm Mr. X: Austin wound up with a bunch of Arlan's tapes that had been maliciously disappeared from Arlan's possession. I believe Austin was able to get them back to him.
	9:41pm ramencity: Malicious disappearing in the worst. I spent some time early covid trying to make a list of shows seen, and it turns out Onomatopoeia won as band I'd seen most often - twenty times!
	9:41pm Ellen Lovebug: @Ramencity Arlan, Vince, and Robert are among my favorite people. I spent a huge amount of time with them in the 90s, Robert especially. I ended up playing a show with Arlan and Vince and playing a set with Arlan under our band name, Heart Therapy
	👻 9:42pm Austin Rich: I still have those tapes! I haven't been to Eugene where I could meet up with Arlan to return them. My friend Colin bought that box of tapes from someone he met at Goodwill, who had this box and was trying to get rid of them. Colin bought them for like a couple dollars, and now gave them to me to return to Arlan. As I understand the story: Arlan got kicked out of his place, and all his possessions were on the street, where a lot of his music stuff was all stolen.
	9:43pm Mr. X: Arlan had a radio show on KRVM which was a lot like some of the more collage-like editions of Mid-Valley Mutations. I can't remember the name of his show, though...
	9:44pm ramencity: I used to listen to that show but I don't remember the name either. @Ellen, that is very cool!
	9:45pm Mr. X: Yes, his landlord put all his shit out on the street, not knowing that Arlan had already paid his rent.
	👻 9:45pm Austin Rich: As I understand it, that box of tapes (and a few others) were the backbone for that radio show. I was gonna sample these tapes and make a show, but that feels weird given that this is Arlan's IP.
	👻 9:46pm Austin Rich: Ellen is connected to all the OG Eugene folx.
	👻 9:48pm Austin Rich: Between Ellen, Mr. X. ramencitykid, and the guy that runs the Panic On 13th blog... you could probably piece together a fair amount of Eugene music history.

	👻 9:49pm Austin Rich: Don knowns everything, but he would rather sit back and drink a beer and nod appreciatively when we get it all right.
	9:50pm Mr. X: Btw, Don Haugen does design work on the annual catalog of my brother's bicycle business, Co-Motion Cycles.
	👻 9:50pm Austin Rich: That makes sense, Mr. X. Don's really good.
	👻 9:51pm Austin Rich: Don and I keep threatening to get together soon, but "soon" keeps getting further and further away. At least a song of his will appear on a comp I'm almost done with... and a song of Ellen's will be on there, too. (And Chris / I Died.)

(And we have to... their original song is an uninterrupted 30 minute piece. We need to cut it down a little, anyway.

	10:03pm andrewBunny: Moog sounds from the Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music! I still have my box set from when I special ordered it in the 70s!
	👻 10:04pm Austin Rich: My copy was a gift, from one of the carpenter's at KMUZ, who had it, but was hoping to find a new home for it. That new home was my collection.
	10:04pm Mr. X: Sounds like they were just twiddling knobs and plugging in patches just to see what would happen.
	👻 10:05pm Austin Rich: Sort of, Mr. X. There's parts that are more instructional, and others that are more demonstrational. I'm playing selections from both records at the same time, overtop each other.
	10:06pm andrewBunny: Krause came out with a 1 record volume 2 to highlight new techniques. Found that one years ago in a used record store, but can't remember where. Mr X: it's pretty minimal. Each track highlights a different module or composition format on the Moog.
	10:12pm Mr. X: Classical mash-ups remind me of when I was stage manager at Beall Concert Hall, walking past all the practice rooms before the show, where all the musicians were warming up different sections of music all at once.
	👻 10:13pm Austin Rich: I love that idea, Mr. X. I'm sure that's how John Cage would do it.
	👻 10:14pm Austin Rich: All these classical records were found a thrift stores, and I don't know much about classical, except what I can pick up from @ramencitykid when he used to listen. But I found a few that I like.
	10:15pm Mr. X: Holst's Planets is a favorite. Though I first heard the Tomita version before any orchestral versions.
	👻 10:16pm Austin Rich: I should check out the Tomita version. I have some of his stuff, but not that! Planets is very fun. Super lively! It's easy to get into, because it sounds like movie soundtrack music before there was movie soundtrack music.
	10:19pm andrewBunny: Ditto, X. Of course, at the time, I was obsessively trying to find anything vaguely electronic. Used to scour the electronic music section of the Schwann Catalog and my high school library for clues and inspiration
	👻 10:20pm Austin Rich: I feel pretty lucky, because by the time I was coming up, you could pretty easily find electronic music if you wanted to. But I certainly love all the early experiments in electronic music.
	10:21pm Mr. X: Beall Hall has an elevator built into the stage for lifting pianos up from the basement onto the stage. I feel like I should be pushing the Steinway onto the elevator right now.
	10:25pm ramencity: (film successfully developed!) Charles Ives had a piece that was supposed to sound like two different marching bands walking past each other.

	10:28pm HyperDose: Lava Lamp Lounge is sounding exceptionally crisp tonight
	👻 10:29pm Austin Rich: It's all the LPs. Those crackles really add up.
	👻 10:31pm Austin Rich: It's hard to pick a favorite of the Surfer's albums, but I have a real soft spot for this one and the one with all the drawings instead of song titles. I think those two hold up the best.

	10:32pm Mr. X: I can't pronounce the name. We always just called it "Pigwad."
	👻 10:33pm Austin Rich: Ahhhh! Heather and I recorded some radio earlier tonight. (Probably something that might end up here... as well as on our Max Podcast. And Maybe Heather's show, too.)
	👻 10:33pm Austin Rich: We always just called it "Pee-Owed." (Like you're "Pissed Off," but you're spelling it out.)
	10:35pm Mr. X: Gibby has a thing about celebrities.
	👻 10:36pm Austin Rich: I think all his pets were named after celebrities. I know they often had a "band dog," who would travel with them when they would tour in the old days. I don't know if they continued that into the later years.
	10:38pm andrewBunny: It was supposed to be pronounced Pee-owed, the abbreviation for pissed off.
	👻 10:39pm Austin Rich: Minority Opinion, but: I think Generic Flipper is one of the few perfect albums ever made. No wasted songs. Perfect lyrics. Slow when everyone else was fast. Psychedelic when everyone else was punk. I can't get enough of this record.
	10:39pm andrewBunny: Claudia (my first wife) and I each made mixtapes for our low-budget wedding. This track was on mine and cleared the room.
	👻 10:39pm Austin Rich: Flipper used to lock the doors so audiences couldn't leave... for that exact reason!

	10:41pm Mr. X: Flipper was always that one band in the Subterranean Catalog that none of your friends had, so you had no idea what they sounded like. But later they caught on somewhat.
	👻 10:41pm Austin Rich: My favorite Flipper story is that, in the old days, they would ask their friends to go to the shows to boo them and make a big scene about hating the show. As time went on, their "true" fans would show up with protest signs and anti-flipper t-shirts.
	👻 10:42pm Austin Rich: Someday I will record a complete cover of this entire album. Each track will have guests on it. I've been wanting to do this for a number of years now.

	👻 10:44pm Austin Rich: Their basslines are perfect.
	10:44pm Mr. X: I would love to do a cover of "Brainwash," though it's not on that album.

	👻 10:48pm Austin Rich: This song in particular seems to have held up TREMENDOUSLY well over the years.

	10:49pm Mr. X: More like stupidity has held up tremendously, so this song still applies.
	👻 10:49pm Austin Rich: Well, now we're just splitting the hairs on the heads of the dimwitted, but: yes.
	👻 10:50pm Austin Rich: It's like when they re-made "Beavis & Butthead," and they both seemed really smart in the new shows. Then it turned out that America is really dumb now, so they just seem smarter than they used to.

	👻 11:04pm Austin Rich: I love that movie, Mr. X. I've seen it a bunch, as recently as 10 years ago. It's a really good piece of sci-fi, that sort of got lost in the mix there with all the other great 80's sci-fi.

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

	9:39pm Mr. X: Austin wound up with a bunch of Arlan's tapes that had been maliciously disappeared from Arlan's possession. I believe Austin was able to get them back to him.
	9:41pm ramencity: Malicious disappearing in the worst. I spent some time early covid trying to make a list of shows seen, and it turns out Onomatopoeia won as band I'd seen most often - twenty times!

My friend Colin bought that box of tapes from someone he met at Goodwill, who had this box and was trying to get rid of them. Colin bought them for like a couple dollars, and now gave them to me to return to Arlan. As I understand the story: Arlan got kicked out of his place, and all his possessions were on the street, where a lot of his music stuff was all stolen.
	9:43pm Mr. X: Arlan had a radio show on KRVM which was a lot like some of the more collage-like editions of Mid-Valley Mutations. I can't remember the name of his show, though...

	👻 10:16pm Austin Rich: I should check out the Tomita version. I have some of his stuff, but not that! Planets is very fun. Super lively! It's easy to get into, because it sounds like movie soundtrack music before there was movie soundtrack music.

	👻 10:39pm Austin Rich: Minority Opinion, but: I think Generic Flipper is one of the few perfect albums ever made. No wasted songs. Perfect lyrics. Slow when everyone else was fast. Psychedelic when everyone else was punk. I can't get enough of this record.
