A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Irene, we got back from Michigan on Tue. and pulled up to the closest fireplug to unload the car. Mirabile dictu, a spot opened up right in front of the bldg. while we were doing so, and we managed to grab it. Good news has been in such short supply lately that this was an almost mystical experience!

then in the colonial period it was cotton. I read an article in a nautical magazine a few years back that posited that the reach the Scandinavians tribes achieved during the Viking years, with colonies all over the British Isles, Iceland, Greenland, even North America and contact with the Mediterranean and Africa was attributable not to the martial prowess of the (male, mainly) warriors -- the Vikings -- but to the skill of the women who made the sails of flax and wool that moved the fleets around the world.

Universal remotes have gotten worse in recent years. Logitech used to make not-great-but-decent options, but they're focusing more on surveillance partnerships now with Amazon/Google/etc. for voice control, which I advise strictly avoiding. The least bad option might be to run everything through one of the OTT devices (Apple TV, possibly) which would mostly simplify everything into the device's one remote. Surveillance platforms are accelerating their rise, so there are no good answers, unfortunately.

@Trouble part of the problem is that companies aren't investing much in the cable TV user experience - since all the money is in streaming (Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, etc.) and the "over the top" boxes that service it (Roku, Apple TV, cable providers' own streaming boxes).

So when a customer *totally reasonably* has an issue with the terrible cable-TV remote, there's not much motivation to fix it. (To hyperbolize a bit, imagine someone today asking for a better VCR to set the clock off of a blinking 12:00 more easily...)
