A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Black Jacobins one of Christopher Hitchens favorite books.

Highly recommend seeing the Raoul Peck 4 part series film “Exterminate All the Brutes.” Goes into very many things re: the inextricable ties between imperialism and the need for racism to justify it. But the complete erasure from history of the magnificently successful slave revolt in Haiti leading to first great free republic of black people (around the same time as the American Revolution) is another unsavory piece of the propaganda doctrine of American Exceptionalism.

Again, a purposeful denying of history to hold up the doctrine myth of white supremacy necessary to the slave-holding South and the merchant ties in the North.

Zinn The Mood:

I’m deeply skeptical of how the disparaging term “conspiracy theory” is so casually thrown around. It’s designed to shut down conversation and implicate the person accused as come kind of zany or misinformed hoaxer. And it’s origins are with the CIA, who came up with the term specially to delegitimize those who challenged the official narrative of how JFK (and MLK?) were assassinated.

I’m finding that an immense uptick in the past few years of its use by the MSM and your average Neoliberal CNN/MSNBC viewer, about everything to to disparaging Bernie to skeptics of the RussiaGate farce to the defense of the garbage political ideology of “incrementalism” etc.

Copernicus was a conspiracy theorist in his day. Until it was universally agreed upon that the Earth rotates around the sun and not the other way around. The abolitionists who fought against the criminal evil of those who rationalized slavery based on a philosophy of blacks being lesser human beings were sort of conspiracy theorists of their day. The many of us who said that the Gulf of Tonkin was a lie, that Iraqi WMD’s were a lie, that the anti war and black liberation movements were being targeted and spied upon by the FBI, etc etc were “conspiracy theorists.”
Until they were all proven right.

@ Zinn - The term "conspiracy theory" may shut down inquiry in some cases. but it totally fits irrational patterns of fake cause and effect. Have you ever been to Comet Ping-Pong Pizza in DC?

A bunch of 4chan types turned it into the center of Pizzagate, which was totally fake. So a guy armed with a rifle walks into Comet Ping-Pong demanding to see the women held in the absent. Guess what Zinn, Comet Ping-Pong has no basement. I think "conspiracy theory" is still a useful term.
  10:57am

@sphere Zinn is 100% correct. Calling someone a 'conspiracy theorist' is no substitute for doing your own hard work of study and critical thinking. It only shows-off one's low intellect.

Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

Stan, I don't know how many slaves were brought to the Americas by traders from the various nations involved, but at least until 1808 (see the Wikipedia article called Slavery in Britain, section 10 on abolition for why that date is important) the British were certainly very big players, perhaps the biggest. I would speculate that is because it was a triangular trade - slaves from west Africa to the Caribbean and the US, sugar and cotton from there to Europe and manufactured goods from Europe and especially Britain to the empire. See section 8.1 in that article for more about the nature of that trade. Not a surprise - at the time British industrial and naval power were significant. There is a big argument for reparations to be paid by many very rich people today whose wealth derives from ancestors who profited from the trade.

@Listener I think maybe God is the Universe's idea of a conspiracy that it uses to 'get us' haha. Remember it was God that instructed his chosen to enslave the Gentiles.

Has anyone heard Laura Nyro's 'Christmas and the Beads of Sweat? I haven't yet but I'm picking it up the next time I see it. I've seen it at the record stores countless times and had no idea that Alice Coltrane plays on all of side 2.

@jt - Pick up Santana's 'Welcome' in the dollar bin. There's an incredible Alice Coltrane song as the opening cut. The rest is listen at your own risk. But the Alice cut is IMMENSE.

@TDK60 - I'll give it another listen. I'm not that into Santana but I really, really like his record with Mahavishnu and the record with Alice.

@Trouble--it amazes me how wonderful it can feel and how soothing it is and it is like you can put your whole body into it and release a lot of energy. And it's kind of like flying

@Marie and @trouble I’ve started going to the neighborhood community pool after work each day. Swimming laps is amazing for exercise but also just so wonderful for decompressing and for mental health. Nice to get out of breath without being drenched in sweat!

That was a really interesting description of Nite Jewel's research. It seems like loss, mourning and trauma are a big part of the popular zeitgeist right now. For my work I regularly look at descriptions of new fiction and non-fiction popular titles. It seems like so much of it across the genres (ex: cozy fiction - literary) focus on those topics currently. I know art isn't gendered but marketing sure is and most of these books are marketed at women.

Haven't been swimming in over 2 years. Too many boats and trains (and then walking) from where I live in NYC to get there. And once you're there, it's crowded and you have to wach your stuff and head back early and wait for the ferry, etc.
