My introduction to Jean Shepherd was The Phantom of the Open Hearth on the NET in 1971. At that time, I had no idea what he had done on radio, and in was next to impossible to source the rich soup that was Jeans history.

Did a little digging and found an article from 1973 about the Cricket Cage (mentioned earlier here). I live in Rockaway right next to Denville so it sparked my interest.

Here’s what found…

If you'd like to learn how to stencil a lampshade, goldleaf a mirror or decoupage a box, the Cricket Cage is a good place to go. The old crafts are taught there in the same painstaking way they were in the 18th century; that is because the shop's owner, June Meier, is among the country's experts in traditional crafts.

Said Priscilla Cokefair, a fellow craftsman:

“Decoupage is beautiful. You take a print, the same kind they used 200 years ago, color it, paste it on, say, a box, and then cover it with 30 coats of varnish.”
The decoupage course takes six weeks and costs $30. A date hasn't been set yet for the next one; however if you're interested in decoupage — or other craft lessons—get in touch with the shop and it will notify you when classes are about to begin.

There's something here for impatient craftsmen, too: one‐day workshops in which you can learn how to arrange dried flowers, finish a frame or assemble a small purse. These workshops cost $5, plus the cost of materials; and there is usually one each week. Phone: (201) 3665657.
