You still hear it here, though it's less frequent than it was when we moved to the neighborhood. The most concentrated Polish area is on the east side of McGuinness and around McGolrick Park (farther from public transit). Still some on this side of McGuinnes, though.

We moved into our bldg. 20 years ago(!). When we moved in 3 of 8 units were Polish people. Only one remains. They have been very smart, adding names to the lease so as to pass the rent-stabilized place on to the next set of relatives. The great-grandchildren of the couple who originally lived there are now in the apt.! But, for example, when our neighbor across the hall died, he'd never added his Polish roommates to the lease so the landlord was able to gut the apt., renovate it, and crank the rent up.

But seven years ago I went to see a heavyweight championship boxing match at Barclay's Center, and the challenger was a Polish boxer. He was a heavy underdog (a "puncher's chance"), but let me tell you, ALL of Greenpoint was on the G train headed down there. My god. It was red and white as far as the eye could see. Many Polish songs being sung. They put this MASSIVE Polish kid on the undercard and let him just beat the crap out of a guy, I think so the crowd would have something to feel good about.

Polish challenger fought well but lost by devastating knockout in the ninth.

In twenty-five years in Greenpoint, I've learned distressingly little Polish. I can read some of the signs (or know what they mean): Mowimy po Polsku, Ksiegarnia, Staropolski, Sklarz (a personal favorite). But otherwise I've leaned how to say "what a woman!"; "you asshole"; and "will you please turn the lights back on?" And of course the single most common word threaded through conversation here which is depressing but inescapable: coorva.

I think it must have been some sort of vasovagal reaction. He was in the middle of having a hairball. All else checked out: blood pressure, blood, urine, reactions, so they don't think it was a stroke or anything. His kidney levels are as good as they were when he was last in two years ago. We give him three(!) different supplements in his (terribly high-quality) food.

We've had two cats make it to twenty-one and a dog to seventeen. If they can dodge cancer, we're good at keeping mammals going.

Are you thinking about getting another mammal to join? (I understand a dolphin would be tough in your current living space)

Actually, yes. We are contemplating a puppy. In July.

No, that is a Polish male name. Frank Sinatra would be Franka too.

It wouldn't be surprising. The 1920s were kind of hep in some ways.

Yeah, he comes by every couple of months. Works all of Brooklyn from what I can tell. Little green truck. Saved my good kitchen knife last year after I'd dropped it and bent the tip. Charged me $6!
