I called it 'coffee-coloured classical music of the future'. What would music be like if 'classic' had not been defined as what happened in Central Europe two hundred years ago? What if the world knew Javanese music and Pygmy music and Aborigine music? What would 'classical music' sound like then?" / From a 2020 interview with Hassell: "The basic metaphor (of the Fourth World) is that of the north and south of a person is a projection of the north and south of the globe...A mind formatted by language and located in the head, compared with the area of wildness and sensuality below the waist where dance and music and procreation reigns."    1:36:41 (Pop-up)

Of particular appeal were inadvertent examples of the post-industrial, post-apocalyptic landscapes so commonly imagined in Cold War-era media. Places and debris that fostered views of modern pop mummified, and contemporary provisions made artifact. Zombie pepsis & fossil aerosols. The project began harvesting audio recordings in 1983. The 1st studio experimentation began in 1986, soon followed by compositions that employed using literal “found sounds” such as fragments of open reel 1/4” tape and 35mm film recovered from burnt out warehouses and abandoned drive-in theaters. The earliest work involved physical tape loops and analog signal processes, which were gradually replaced by digital delay treatments and multi-track manipulation.  *   1:43:04 (Pop-up)

@WFMU listener John I do not usually do major holidays. I have skipped Thanksgiving most of the time, although I am invited. I do not celebrate December holidays and the mythology that accompanies them. I do get obligingly together with people and bring whatever gifts I can. @WFMU listener John: You can hibernate over the holidays if that is what moves you. Your mom and family would understand. It is such a tough year for many of us. I have no obligations; my sister and family are in Florida and we are not close. Best friends and lovers sadly are no longer on the planet so I choose whom I spend time with.
