It has now been over 6 months since I last went to a live show. But I have bought 55 tickets for the coming season. If it happens

I saw footage on social media of some cool live music events happening around Brooklyn, outside, but I wasn't aware of them ahead of time.

Perhaps not counting in that duo configuration we were discussing, but that's definitely how I got here.

I think the "A" Trio should do a series of songs based on different conjugations of the Ornette title: The Shape of Jazz that Had Come, that Was to Have Come, that Would Have Come, etc.

Not much live music coming here though: we've done such a shitty job containing the virus that anyone playing here has to quarantine for a couple of weeks after leaving. Musicians already tended to avoid France, this isn't making it any better

tranewreck:

Ha! Al West got the “festival” up and running. We shared a small cottage on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester and some of the artists stayed with us or at least dropped by before the performance.
Marty Ehrlich(my childhood friend) played while still at NEC.
Jeanne Lee and Gunter Hampel spent the night
I didn’t know that there recordings of these performances that included Byard Lancaster, Max Roach, Joseph Jarman and Famoudou Don Moye- (we went and saw an action film the night before they performed)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am
Jeff Golick:

Fantastic, @tranewreck. Thanks for the full picture, and recollection!
Avatar 🥁 10:10am

This Toshikuki Miyama recording is impressive. It certainly slipped under the radar in 1976, even with the Columbia release.
  10:13am
tranewreck:

Leroy Jenkins brought his sons with him for a visit to the “country”
Byard borrowed my sax neck strap and mailed it back with a very kind note
Jeanne Lee wouldn’t let her son eat the biscuits that we made with dinner - concerned about the processed flour

If I can make it past the Covid, I'm going to let the processed flour have its way with me. Only fair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am

Yes, I'm pretty much 90% processed at this point. I do respect the hell out of that level of concern re what we put into our bodies, though.

Gary Sullivan doing a proper Toots send-off on the main stream of WFMU right now, fyi!
  10:33am
tranewreck:

I don’t recall how Helias’ name was pronounced but I’ll reach out to Al for details.Al West was the driving force for the series and deserves all the credit. John Vocci did some fantastic black and white photos of the performers but not sure if they were ever released. Some of the funding came from Meet The Composers Arts grants.
Marty came a couple of times, once with an ailing Julius Hemphill
Roach gave a master class on how to listen to drumming
Al was ‘CUW’s station manager
I did a cooking show which was fairly novel in ‘77-78

The Japanese set was very interesting, all new to me. Midorikawa track reminded me of the Strung Trio of NY, butt predated them. Wonder if they heard the Japanese group.

@fred: thanks for asking; his campus has been handling it very well so far, and they're down to zero active cases (given current levels of testing, anyway). Most of his classes are virtual, though, except for one that is meeting outdoors, under a tent.

More Alan Braufman is the very best reason to play even more Alan Braufman. Ooh, I just thought of a great name for a radio show: Heavy Rotations. STOP! No one gets to use it so I can when I'm reincarnated.

The obituaries of Peacock reminded me of the strange marital entanglements of Paul & Carla Bley, Gary and Annette Peacock (+ Steve Swallow). They all seem to have remained on good terms.

DJpeterDE:

I’ll pick up your slack, Jeff.
Just realizing that GP exemplifies this quality of deliberation and spontaneity (that for me also describes Altschul, Bley, Steve Lacy but GP in particular).
