Hi, fred. I think isolation, making a living with your physical labour, poverty, and dire circumstance might be common themes of island life anywhere. Who were you reading?

@Sem A short story by Mary Kuryla, in the latest Conjunctions. What reminded me of Cape Breton was descriptions of a ferry, a road going up to scarcely populated highland, fishing boats and ice, nothing plot related

I have a hard time following German hiphop, as the lyrics are too fast (and the slang and euphenisms). But then again, I don't get lyrics in English for any genre.

TDK - trying to rent something in the countryside, while keeping the flat in Edinburgh. Maybe just for six months to a year, while we decide what's best to do.Trouble is, you have to get out of commuting distance to get a reasonable price. And, man it can get very cold and snowy over winter.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
David Dichelle:

Chresti: Usually there are common-sense limits to words in normal real use and they are all relatively straightforward to parse, just written with fewer gaps between words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm

@chresti: well, elections haven't exactly been going in an encouraging direction in many european countries lately, so they should take their time and pick wisely. I wouldn't recommend France for that reason. We seem to be headed for neo-nazi rule in a couple of years

The longest french word only clocks in at 25 letters I think, though business jargon might have crept up a few (adding "ing" is worth 3)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm

Nothing like business jargon in any language - lots of partly made-up English-sounding words.

@chresti: Belgium is cheaper, but French only works in the South, the Northern part is Flemish (and it's a sore subject). In France Paris is very expensive, other cities not so much but it all depends on what kind of job they're looking for (the country is still pretty much centralized, though it got better). If they have money though, everything will be alright, anywhere
