A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Got a 2-month house guest arriving here on the east coast of Canada from the west coast, trying to figure out how she can quarantine safely for the requisite 2 weeks while I continue to live and work here. @karol marks: the whole idea of WFMU is that we are people, not algorithms. It is not surprising to hear that people have opinions, especially people who volunteer their time to dj and share their love of music. What we are doing at WFMU goes against the corporate idea of making money, therefore the opinions you are hearing reflect those ideals. If that makes you uncomfortable then you have other options. One of those is to ask yourself why these sentiments make you uncomfortable.

Hughie Considine:

@Karol, there are many archived shows recorded before the pandemic. You can listen to them and not have to endure people talking about the tragedy we are all living through.

It is certainly easy not to read the comments if they bother you. People do that to my comments all the time.

Karol: I'm sorry you find it so painful (kind of an extreme term though imho). But it isn't like you're being subjected to some Clockwork Orange-style experiment in which you're being forced to listen.

@Stefan - Really? Where di you hear that? That's an astounding idea...

Digging this Suzanne Ciani track! She did a really interesting collaboration with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, part of the excellent "Freakways" series. There's another really cool one in the same series, with Ariel Kalma and Rob A.A. Lowe. Worth checking out if you like this kind of introspective electronica.

There is a sort of unwritten rule to avoid political stuff on WFMU which seems fair. But at certain times of great change, it's hard to avoid. Sometimes I go to WFMU shows for apolitical comfort. Other times the comments board gets "political" and so do I, as earlier in this show. I'm very political, so I usually try to suss out the mood of the show happening. No need for folks to always agree. But it shouldn't be surprising that a station that is dedicated to freedom in music, has disc jockeys and listeners who also lean toward freedom in most other areas too.

Lixiviation=the process of separating soluble from insoluble substances by dissolving the former in water or another solvent.
I feel this is relevant.

@TDK60: I don't believe there's any such rule, written or not. FMU DJ's talk about whatever they want - the only rules are the FCC regulations, as far as I can tell.

I mean, this is the station that used to air Dave Emory!

@TDK60 maybe that's an unwritten rule for all regular folks, too? perhaps there are too few real political discussions in America. and by real, I mean substantive discussions of issues as opposed to politics as a version of team sports.

Yeti, maybe it would be more clear to say, some DJs often urge no politics, usually. These are unusual times, thankfully..

i also think that while everyone may not agree with everyone else, that wfmu tends to be a group of free thinking people (or at least we like to think we are) and it is sometimes good to just get your points out and vocalize them, whether you are a DJ or listener. Discussion is always a good thing.

the fcc prohibition for swearing only applies to over the radio airwaves, not the streams@brian. thanks for your support @dougseidel!

@TDK60: OK. I don't listen to every show on WFMU, but I haven't encountered any "let's not talk about politics" in any of the programs I listen to regularly.

If I had a WFMU show, I would revise my archives to put in swearing after the show aired.
That is how I would stick it to the man!

Good morning everyone, especially Trouble and her menagerie of birds. Birds were quiet in the forest from which I have just returned, but the squirrels were hosting drive-time talk and the coyotes did the late-nite Art Bell shift.
