Don Pullen so good - and Roy Brooks the only choice for Dougie-Baby Bed music!!
Avatar 10:52am

I only saw Don Pullen as part of the original Mingus Dynasty. The piano the venue had was so bad he stopped playing in the middle of his solo. Danny Richmond went to the front of the stage to point out that the piano was not tuned but that Don was so good, he would go on anyway. But Pullen decided to play almost no notes, à la Count Basie. It was not his usual style, and I was very disappointed.

I think the FCC should let go of the language.

He can make a clarinet sound like a tenor!

I met Baraka's daughter Dominique DiPrima long ago at a venue I can't recall. I just remember her identifying herself as such and as a radio DJ of sorts.

Who are the musicians here? The saxophone doesn't sound like Arthur Blythe at all to me.

This was a live performance at Soundscape in NYC in late 1980. I saw this trio perform this live a few months later, at Oberlin.

Read plays by LeRoi Jones (per the print volumes) in high school. A review of two of his one-acts in the NYT, late '64, praises his work but takes him to task for "the urge to shock by invoking violence and all the obscenities he can think of." Which might explain why in high school I liked to read LeRoi Jones. But the review also notes that a "Larry Rivers" did the set design. Good lord, I wonder if that was the Larry Rivers!

I heard Steve McCall in a duet with a saxophonist, whom I didn't think was playing well. Then I realized I could just focus on McCall and enjoy the rest of the concert. That was a formative experience.
