I think today's hep and fab recording / producing techniques and Interwebz distribution make it easy to lose the really startling talent and sheer vocal power of singers from back when, like Barbra Streisand. If you could hear her on a big stage all alone, no mic, just pushing air, she was pitch-perfect and could PROJECT.

Stick to your guns, Sheila. Even if the Civil War wasn't in part about slavery, and it sure seems that this was a key issue, the Confederate States were about destroying the country as it then existed, meaning secession. Doesn't seem that this should be celebrated.

The confederate statue in the center of my town finally came down less than two weeks ago. As Faulkner said, the past isn't even past.
  5:43pm
P-90:

Those statues went up in the generations after that war as part of a deliberate, concerted effort on many fronts, a propaganda war of its own. The purpose of this “post-Civill War war” was to rewrite the history of what had happened. For starters: that war was NEVER referred to, while it was happening or in the years immediately after., as the “Civil War.” It was always called “The War of Rebellion.” It wasn’t a “civil” war fought over “misunderstandings” among citizens of one nation. The Confederate states broke their compact with the USA and LEFT our country to form their own, then made war on the US, intending to destroy it and impose their own new government on it. To perpetuate an economy built on race-based human slavery.

Well, it does matter when the statues were put up. The statues reinforced the idea that African-Americans better know "in their place" in Jim Crow society. Last week, Fredericksburg removed a slave auction block from a downtown corner. Imagine walking by that everyday on your way to work.

I totally support you in admitting you don't know it all. I think many in the general public expect that anyone on TV or the radio should know everything, or pretend they do. You are a person just like all of us. And your admission makes it easier for all of us to admit that we don't know it all, and to open up to learning.
  5:48pm

It's all part of the learning we all need to do. This is a good time for that to take place.
  5:48pm
Russt44:

I totally agree. Symbols of the Confederacy have no place in our society just like the outlawed Nazi symbols in Germany.
  5:49pm
P-90:

It wasn’t just statues and monuments. There were textbooks and history books printed up and distributed for free to schools and libraries across the South, that rewrote the story of the war. And the central revisionist lie that generations of school kids were indoctrinated with was that that wasn’t really fought over slavery. But: hells yes it was!

@Brian, sure, but my point is that this apparent need by some Americans to continually celebrate the confederacy is not rooted in much of an actual legacy of statehood. Rather, as others have already pointed out, it is a means of enforcing/celebrating white supremacy.

Our President(?) and others who defend these monuments as “a part of our history, however dark or troubled, that should be preserved” are missing the essential point that the narrative these monuments tell is NOT really a part of our history, it’s a deliberate deception that covers up big chunks of our history. And that narrative was used to perpetuate racism and resentments that caused generations of suffering, and intentionally kept open wounds that could have and should have been allowed to heal.
