Were The Spiders and Spiders different bands?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Funky16Corners:

No, same guys, bad typing
Avatar 3:10pm
Julie:

Lotta guys in that band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
Funky16Corners:

Some of the Japanese Group Sounds bands had seven or eight members. Lots of guitars!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm
fred:

Could have happened, even with the same guys. Recording for a different label under a slightly different name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm
Funky16Corners:

True that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm

The arrangement on this one reminds me of the Bee Gees from around the same time

Like the Jpop and Kpop groups of today Larry. Haha!

Except I have yet to see any of those groups with instruments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm

Then again Sex Pistols were kind of a boys band and Lydon proved better than that (pack of controversial opinions right there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
ParUbi:

Like how heavy this one is getting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, this is a real freak out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Funky16Corners:

@Fred - I was discussing the prefab nature of the Sex Pistols with my son the other day, comparing them with musically important bands like the Damned and the Clash (all starting when Captain Sensible's 'Wot' came on the radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
coelacanth∅:

fred, i'll just say that john lydon is very lucky we've ever heard of him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Pretty much anything Malcolm McLaren touched was prefab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
coelacanth∅:

hey Phillippe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Funky16Corners:

I was telling him how genuinely terrified some US officials were of the Pistols coming over here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
ParUbi:

early PiL is really worth it
Avatar 3:42pm
Erica:

It's unusual that the Pistols are more memorable than Lydon's other band Public Image Ltd. and PIL released more material.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
fred:

PiL opened my eyes in my high school years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Funky16Corners:

PiL were a band. The Sex Pistols were a calculated provocation with a couple of excellent songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm

Bought some One Culture Foods Ramen Noodles (Vietnamese Been Pho and Chinese Chicken Noodle), big hit in my family!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Funky16Corners:

We got a bunch of those!I Had the spicy ramen for lunch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Hey coel.

McLaren was one of those dudes that over-fertilized. Stuff grew like crazy at first because he dumped a lot of manure on it. Soon stuff started dying on the vine, figuratively and literally, however
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
fred:

(PiL also got me kicked out of my own birthday party, down a slippery slope that eventually led to this station)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
coelacanth∅:

in my opinion, lowly though it may be, p.i.l. was good, very good, mainly because of the music -which lydon had little to do with. his lyrics were/are unremarkable and not much else going on there. just a guy with opinions and an overblown sense of self-importance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Phillippe Bastille:

ok Fred, that you gotta explain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, really.

Hey Doug!
Avatar 3:49pm
Hubig Pie:

You're being too harsh , they had 3 excellent songs. GSTQ, Holiday in the Sun and Anarchy in the UK. If you watch The Filth and the Fury , you can see they were actually quite good. (Sid Vicious excepted)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doug - Is that your way of requesting a Jim Stafford retrospective?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm

My only request is that you do you. I'll be happy with the results.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm

@PB: Well, it was also a girl's birthday in my class, which is why people showed up. Given a chance to play a track (because it was my birthday), I chose Four Enclosed Walls. I was shown the door. Worth it

Did you hear about Irene Trudel?! She has found a home on the Drummer Stream. Mondays, 12-3pm (et), beginning this coming Monday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
fred:

Also, I think my first step on that slope was Kate Bush. I was introduced to her music (this is true) by a group of metalhead bikers who swore by Metallica until they got out of sight and played Kate Bush when drunk and high enough
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
fred:

@Erica: Her (other birthday girl) house. I have never lived in a house
@Doug: I heard, and I'm so happy about that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
John from NP:

Was just gonna say, adult film title!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
ParUbi:

I'll say that I'm very *uninterested* in any music project that Lydon is involved with now. I think part of the luck being spoken of here was hooking up with Martin Atkins

@Erica: Not sure what you mean. Geographically, in the southern suburbs of Paris, as I still do (but closer to the city)
Avatar 4:05pm

I meant did you live in an apartment building or something like that? That's all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm

I liked that Mieko Hirota track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Funky16Corners:

It's a cover/adaptation of Marva Whitney's 'Unwind Yourself'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
coelacanth∅:

Ubi yes, lucky there too, but he had to have been extraordinarily lucky before that to have had the opportunity to make those acquaintances. (in other words -malcolm mclaren)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
fred:

@Erica: yeah, apartment building
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
coelacanth∅:

...as mclaren was to have the talents of Steve Jones and Paul Cook at his disposal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
fred:

@ParUbi and coel: at some point getting lucky enough times points at something different than luck
Avatar 4:10pm
Erica:

Thanks Fred. Sorry about what happened at that party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Funky16Corners:

McLaren was a canny manipulator of public sentiment and the press. Fortunately he restricted his abuses to fashion and entertainment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Funky16Corners:

BTW These are two sides of the same 45
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
coelacanth∅:

fred, absolutely. lydon, though maybe not on the level of mclaren, is also skilled at manipulation of public sentiment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Funky16Corners:

Lydon is basically the UR version of the modern media troll. He enjoy fucking with people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
fred:

@Erica: Don't be sorry, I'm not. It was a break from the high school mold. I even got a reverse experience of sort a few years later, when my second shot at choosing a track at a party went to Steve Reich's Drumming, and everybody went wild. Some people even talked to me after that. The popularity lasted days (as in two)
Avatar 4:19pm
Erica:

Cool Fred. Still you never forget the first time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm pretty sure he's mixing traditional Japanese drums with a drum set here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
Funky16Corners:

Ah! He is! Kisaku Katada - "Japanese traditional nagauta percussionist. Appointed as a Living National Treasure by the Japanese state in 1999."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
fred:

That was nice indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Funky16Corners:

I have to up the number of records in my collection featuring Living National Treasures
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
fred:

Larry, the good thing about records is that no-longer-living National Treasures also count. Records can bring their talent to those who were born too late to witness it firsthand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
