Mark R:

Mingus is well-known and well-regarded within the jazz cognoscenti, but to the public at large, I'd say he's relatively unknown. Meaning if you walked up to the average guy on the street and asked him if he's heard of Duke Ellington, he'd say yes, but if you asked him about Charles Mingus, he wouldn't know. So on that basis, I'd say he's underrated. He's right up there with the best of the best, including Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.

@doctor, I just hope the headline in the future isn't "... and taking the country with him."

One night long ago, Chresti and I went to a show at Fuzzyland, a floating club in L.A. that had taken up residence in an old bowling ally in Highland Park. After the last band they had free form dancing right on the bowling lanes. On one side of us was Beck dancing by himself, and on the other was Mike Kelly dancing by himself. I pointed this out to her and said "Remember this night."

Chresti, they're sending $$$, but to all their buddies, of course. Then they'll say there's not enough left to help anyone else (McConnell is already saying that).

Geri Allen took over the reins of the Univ. of Pittsburgh's Jazz Department from its founder Nathan Davis. She served in that position for less than four years before dying, rather suddenly, in 2017.

@Doug, ridiculous that both she and Roney are no longer with us.
Allen's trio work with Paul Motian and Charlie Haden (under any of their names) is particularly fantastic.

String Trio (in it's various incarnations) were great!

Thanks for the spins, Jeff, and the company, all. See you next time 'round the track.

No slight to Geri Allen, but *I* would sound fabulous in a trio with Paul Motian and Charlie Haden.

Thanks for all sonic selections this morning Jeff. Was especially enjoying that String Trio selection, as a fitting tribute to GL, and for just the lovely way they were laying down such a great and bumpy percussive halo in it all, all three dig in to their instruments so well. Am realizing that I am missing the visceral feeling of a train ride during this era of stay at home.
