no luck on the wooden monument...its mount looks impromptu, so I'm thinking it's impermanent, perhaps non-commisioned post-grad work..looks cobbled together from Norse-derived dragon bits, and an Anthony Gormley-like figure in a different wood. Yvang, can't agree more!
  5:04pm

When you say "eclectic" I think Santa Monica station KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. It is the apotheosis of pretentious, "Hey, look at me! I'm cool!" programming.

Freeform radio has the freedom to play something that is not eclectic, perhaps.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
Bas NL:

@TDK.. good question..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
StringOFperils:

@tdk60..I think that was a semantic joke argument. the chief difference is that 'eclectic radio' is an overused and exhausted term used in neo-commercial radio, yeah like KCRW. So it means nothing really. Free-form is a term from the late 60s, meaning yuo can do whatever you want to, to make something new and fresh and different. Chatters were just jerking each others' chains, rattling each others' self-isolation cages

Stanley:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm

@TDK60: Eclectic is diverse, which is good. I think freeform is personal, which can be great or awful, or anywhere in between, for each listener, and that's kind of the point

Does KCRW do Polka?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
StringOFperils:

I stand corrected. That station does meet the dictionary definition of eclectic....but it isn't free. It's about money, ultimately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
fred:

@βrian: Agreed, but some of the most sadistic shows were the most memorable. Then again, I tuned out of others too fast to remember them
  5:15pm
Dean:

Also, I think that with respect to WFMU "free-form" characterizes the way the entire station operates and programs, whereas with KCRW "eclectic" referred to the programming and brand of one show. The rest of the station was local gov't, NPR and NPR-ish stuff, nothing special.

  5:19pm
Dean:

You pretty much captured OED's take, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
doctorjazz:

There's much overlap, I'm sure, between eclectic and free form. I'd say eclectic can still be programmed; the show is supposed to have a certain content or theme, varied as that may be. Free Form leaves out all to the DJ; they're likely to have some tendencies to certain genres, artists, but they're not told at all what they should be playing. (Some FMU shows are somewhat programmed, like the blues and gospel shows, but even there, the DJ had wide latitude (Matt has a very open sense of what is blues)

Hello up there (on the comments thread), Soul Captain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hmm, Eclectic vs. free form. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I mostly listened to KCRW for the chatter. Their music programming I could only take in small doses. But now, since every one is flipping out all the time, the dj's seem to be less inclined to play the usual well groomed blah. As per our conversation last nigh, Coel, I took Garcia with me on my run to the store awhile ago. Timeless and poignant without been specific.
  5:29pm
Dean:

One of OED's strengths is its depiction in timelines of examples of usage the evolution of the language, for better or worse. Another is detailed etymology for most entries. The lexicon takes on breadth and depth.

In a recent comment on a listserv, βrian, one participant stated, "I've always thought of cataloging as the core of librarianship."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
David Dichelle:

Nick, I'm not sure if it really translates or if the distinctions are even that clear-cut. For me, freeform has more to do with individual freedom and experimenting, while eclectic just means there is no particular genre. But that's just my sense of it.

coelacanth∅:

oh man, Dean i really should get one. that sounds great!
- and i assume it calls slangs slangs, instead of entering them as if they're real words, letting the children argue that they are real words, because they're in the websters. (or the urban dictionary)

Dean:

Hey, Bas NL, at least she didn't call you Merriam Webster.

Dean, it's a freeform clarinet.

Franco i forgot! but i'm taking it out now, and psyched again.

Dean:

I played clarinet and bass clarinet, and on occasion, eclectic guitar.

@Bas: Our six-year old yesterday asked us, "Why are you not turning that off?" (We were enjoying Radio Ravioli.)

(i can't take it on my walk though, since i only have it on vinyl and cassette, and only have a cd walkman)

David, well, it might be me letting my critical guard down, just for the relief when I can't stand the news for another second, I think.

Dean:

My cataloging professor, Elaine Svenonius, wrote a very good book on the topic long after I graduated, The Conceptual Foundations of Descriptive Cataloging. I had to acquire my own copy.

Dean:

Yes, Brian in UK. The clarinet has a sadder, droopier tone.

I played clarinet one year in elementary school band. I was awful and gave up music for years.

BAS HL. perfect response. kids are right on. Language is symbols that point to actual objects. Never let the language obfuscate or replace the actual thing that it points to; that's like being mesmerized by witchcraft. Just open your eyes and your ears, like a kid. It's rich and it's wonderful to be directly connected to the real world, without the intermediary cage of language.

I never got much past bibliography.

Dean:

I was awful, too, TDK60, but I stuck with it for three years. Also played tenor saxophone. Followed by anything I could use to generate noise.

TDK60:

Interesting that Dorsey & Miller were huge with their clarinets in the '30s-'40s, then clarinet seemed to disappear in jazz.
