Though a lot of societal bitter with the musical sweet today. But we are Sophisticated Boom-Boomers and can take it with clear eyes and full hearts!

"Viv Albertine said in her 2014 book ‘Clothes, Clothes, Clothes, Music, Music, Music, Boys, Boys, Boys’ that this song was based around a few lines she wrote about Keith Levene’s drug habit, and was repurposed as a round, as the band “remembered doing in school”."

Oh dead punk lady with the knack
Of looking fierce in pins and black,
The suburbs wouldn’t want you back.
You wished upon a shooting star
And trusted in your wish as far
As he was famous and bizarre.
The band broke up, its gesture made.
And though the music stopped, you stayed.
Now it was the sharp things he played:
Needles and you, not with the band,
Till something greater than you planned
Opened erect within his hand.
You smiled. He pushed it through your shirt
Deep in your belly, where it hurt.
You turned, and ate the carpet’s dirt.
And then not understanding why
He watched out with a heavy eye
The several hours you took to die.
The news was full of his fresh fame.
He OD’d ending up the same.
Poor girl, poor girl, what was your name?

Part of the problem is the idea that the government should take care of people. For many, punishing other people for their substance use is, in fact, "taking care of them". So, think about this the next time you wish that the government would take care of people's problems. The definition of "taking care" is whatever the government says it is.

My dad did drugs with Billie Holiday. Gave her all his pot when he was drafted for WWII.
His drug lecture to me was: "Don't smoke too much pot. All my friends died from heroin."

I would add to the damage of the war on drugs the thousands of people who have died because those around them were too afraid to call 911.
I lost my true love to that circumstance.

Those laws which hold individuals who give others drugs criminally responsible are so upsetting, since using together is in fact encouraged as harm reduction, and cops are guaranteed keepers of overdose reversal kits.
The message that we want to make life safer for users and that we must treat them with respect is crucial.
And talk to those in your communities, schools or places of work about holding narcan training and keeping life saving drugs on hand. And the playlist is well curated to boot. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

For example the Soviet tales of soldiers just endlessly drinking vodka during war because of the lack of water.
The evidence I have read explains that many distilleries just filtered water as part of their process. And as such they would provide cleaned water to people who wanted it. Sometimes in the same bottles they bottled booze in. Thus the urban legend of Soviet troops during World War II “surviving” on just vodka instead of water. Whatever they drank was in a bottle that looked like vodka, but it was mostly water.
