To be honest, contemporary music has generally not given sufficient thought to concrete as a building material. Good to see this oversight being addressed.

Appreciate that, @LP Stevenson. Having worked for a publisher that specialized in reissuing older books, I can recognize the difficulty in bringing things from decades ago into the light of current day. There are spy thrillers and such from the 60s and 70s that are just overwhelmingly sexist, to an almost debilitating degree.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
Jeff Golick:

@WR: no, we didn't mess with the books at all. Sometimes for things from the 19th century or early 20th there would be a note on the copyright page, but no bowdlerizing.

I was thinking that new editions of books for youth would be some what justified but that clear notation of changes and why be included and used as tool for further learning. There has always been The Censors looming in publishing, even when authors first getting published but unacknowledged ongoing change of previously published works is a slippery slope. Sorry to go all blah blah on this tangent. My task for this morning is to do something about the nearly 50 pages I open in Chome to band camp and wikipedia pages from playlist links.

Oh, and also try to remember the password for the laptop I reinstalled windows on in September. What was I thinking on that balmy Indian summer day. Clever me always out smarting me. Is tha Ayler? Yes?
Avatar 🥁 9:59am
Listener Gregory:

@WR, I think you're right about the edited versions of books for youth. However, I also think it is important for people to understand how people talked and thought back in the day. I just had an uncomfortable experience reading a Daniel Defoe novel that had episodes in slave-holding Virginia. Defoe was quite enlightened for the time, but even so, his attitudes were ghastly. We shouldn't forget those things.

  11:06am
Dean:

My Borbetomagus story: A few years ago I was in Cambridge, MA, for something or other, and I wanted to visit Weirdo Records, now defunct. I'd been looking for a recording of Borbetomagus and Hijokaidan at Victo, but had never stumbled across it. As I approached the store from about a block away I sensed -- virtually smelled -- the record at Weirdo, which kept a very small inventory. Indeed it was there, and I bought it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am

@LG: (re Iyer) that's certainly true, but still there is the basic (historical?) fact that jazz is Black American music. I suppose it now offers a less complicated proximity, but not that uncomplicated, as recent troubles at WBGO indicate: www.nytimes.com...

Doug Schulkind:

The Gang's not all here :-(
  11:14am
Dean:

I did, too, hyde. Sorry it's gone.

At a glance, Vijay Iyer seems ... confused or distracted ... by "nouns that become freighted with people’s agendas." That's understandably a real danger, but then to avoid the confusing distraction one needs to devote one's energies, for a time, not to political advocacy, but to boring stuff like philology. He seems not eager to do that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:16am
doctorjazz:

Not to quibble with Iyer (a Genius Fellow, no), but you could say the same thing about rock, country, Blues, R & B, almost all American music, at least to some extent.

Can anyone out there offer pronunciation help on the Swedish musician Anna Högberg's (playing horn on this YES) last name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
fred:

I like the "verb instead of nouns" approach, in that it emphasizes action. I remember clearly the acrimony and wasted hours over whether I could claim to be feminist despite being male. I said had no problem being an ally instead, but that lead to more wasted hours over whether that was divisive and demeaning.
  11:26am
Dean:

Great example, fred. I resolved that question for myself many years ago, thanks to a passage in a footnote in Christine Littleton's "Reconstructing Sexual Equality." She wrote, "I take the experience of living a goodly number of years as a woman to be a necessary, but not sufficient, prerequisite of feminism. Ergo, on my definition, men would have to give up their class status in some nontemporary way in order to meet the minimum qualifications."

@Listener Gregory: These stupid disputes also absurdly build community, unless someone takes them too seriously for too long. Anarchists are great at this, if a mob emerges (like 3 people agreeing), it will naturally split. Just shooting the breeze, having each other's back when it counts is what matters
