As someone who grew up involved with gardening (and still am), I find myself in a quandary at times, dealing with what may be considered more harmful representatives of the insect population. If everything has a defined function in the ecosystem, then who am I to deny the continued existence of that being? Yet, if the situation isn't mitigated, it could become a greater problem. I try to be as benign in my management as possible, while promoting the overall health of the garden I'm stewarding. I certainly have one of the epicenters of local bee activity here in the summers, and do what I can to avoid harming them, in particular.

MMM i have felt that way. by the time i was a teenager i wouldn't kill anything unless it was actively sucking, stinging, biting or being a parasite.
the truth i came to learn, once i started gardening, as you know, is that the insects that are a problem became a problem because of human interference. yellow jackets, japanese beetles, slugs, potato beetles, squash beetles, gypsy moths...(etc etc) so i justify my saving my garden, other people's gardens, and potentially the well-being of myself and others.
i hate killing them and i suffer spiritually for doing it, but i feel i have to.

...i feel like the war i've waged on my sister's 3 acres on yellow jackets and japanese beetles has resulted in a much much more diverse insect and bird population there and for her neighbors, who are beekeepers. the difference over the past 6 years is obvious. lots of bees and non-asshole wasps. probably 1/200th the number of yellow jackets. (there was a big problem)

Mr.P @ 10.50 (i went and cooked something)
-i know that was a joke! ..but i think that figure is very low. 4 years ago there were at least 2 big nests -thousands of wasps each; entering or leaving the nest at a rate of 1-2/second; and 3-4 smaller ones -probably having hundreds or maybe 1-2 thousand yellowjackets in each. last summer there was only one small one -maybe a couple hundred wasps.

....thousands of honey bees -which i could work amidst without incident.

I just remembered something: When I was a youngster, the kid across the street came over in total panic and told me there was a giant bug in the gutter in front of his house. I went to investigate and it turned out to me a crab. We puzzled over it and then I went back inside to watch TV. The only reasonable explanation for it been there was his older sisters boyfriend was a surfer and would sleep in car in front of their house. I think he brought it from the beach.
