Listener comments!

Hello Jason and listeners. I took today off to get some relief from the transit strike after going to a show yesterday. It also lets me avoid the office Christmas party, an unintentional but welcome perk
Avatar 11:06am
Jason Elbogen:

Hey Fred, nice to see you here... So, the transit strike seems never-ending, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am
fred:

Transit strikes related to pensions tend to last over here. I'm getting used to it. Though I had a nasty fall this week that entailed walking 6 miles with blood dribbling down my leg. Ended up with a blood-soaked pant leg and feeling like a character in your transit travelogues of days past

chresti:

Hello! nice sounds!

fred:

I saw a pretty cool Korean show a couple of weeks ago. Great percussion as is often the case. This time the style was "donghaean byeolsingut", but I also scored a great CD of sinawi there (transliteration mileage may vary)
Avatar 11:51am
Jason Elbogen:

Fred--what was the group called?
Chresti - Hi! Where are you from?
  11:52am
Martinibomb:

hey jason, fred, chresti hope you're all doing swell today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
fred:

@Jason: Not really a group, and saying it was a Kim family won't help much. The shaman/singer was listed as Kim Dungeon. Other Kims were Junghee, Dongyeol and Jinhwan, with an outlier Jo Jonghun. Again transliteration traps abound
Avatar 11:59am
Jason Elbogen:

'Kim's probably a spot on transliteration, though...
Also--Have you heard of that Japanese singer Kumio Kurachi I playued a couple of tracks back? Very good, I think, and I think he's had a lot of releases (although I'm pretty sure I didn't find out about him till recently)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
fred:

@Jason: Kim might be spot on, but it's not that helpful as it's very common. Gotta check out more of Kumio Kurachi (I miss most shows because work sucks that way)

Mr Fab:

Hey all! "Don't Bully The Nine-Tailed Foxes". Right. Back to only harassing those with lesser numbers of tails
Avatar 12:12pm
Jason Elbogen:

I know Fred (I was joking). The 'Kim' percentage is actually a little crazy... Probably more than 10% of Koreans have the surname.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
fred:

@Jason: transliteration is trickier with tonal languages. I'm ashamed to confess I don't know whether Korean is one. Do you know?
Avatar 12:18pm
ARB:

Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
fred:

My brother's original surname was rendered as Kwon. Apparently it's quite common too
Avatar 12:20pm
Jason Elbogen:

I don't think Korean is tonal, but I can find out Monday! Or sooner if I bump into one of my students...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
fred:

One coworker had a literal, maybe extreme, definition of "bumping into a student". He staged-dived at a Melt-Banana show, and thought he might have landed on a student of his

Flushing used to be Jewish, eh? My mom grew up there when it was an Irish stronghold. But I can see different immigrant groups living together. Had to keep all of us away from the posh Manhattan-ites.
Avatar 1:06pm
Mr Fab:

Yes, "Electric Latin Love Machine," one of my fave Moog albums! Did you hear Ursula1000's show yesterday? An all-Moog spectacular.

Martinibomb:

I thought religion/god/devil was insane when I was 4/5 totallY!
Avatar 1:22pm
Jason Elbogen:

Martin--I started wondering about it around then, too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
fred:

I admit it took me much longer, though by the time Sunday school became "metal tape sweep day" I had started to get the idea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
fred:

Ehiopian? Makes my shoulders want to move, so maybe yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm

Ethiopian music is safe, it's my knee that got hurt. And it's pretty much healed by now anyway

Thanks Jason!

Thank you!
