That Cornershop should be played back to back w/ Macka B's "Never Played a 45" where he disses djs who have never played a 45 ( a good rocksteady/dancehall appropriation of the song)

Yeah, but sometimes.

As for Beck, I'm not a fan. He's...whatever, bland, phoning it in. But among his first labels was Flipside. There's even a picture of him with his dad at the Masque way the hell back in the day. But I gotta insist, my band's shitty record was the first Flipside record.

Love Richard Thompson, sweet him many times, acoustic, electric, and an all acoustic, all request show at The City Winery (everyone wrote 3 requests on slips of paper. They went into a bowl, and he picked them and played them. He had an assistant with a laptop who pulled up and printed out lyrics. It was great. He almost piglet off Solo guitar version of And Your Bird Can Sing!). Is love to get to the FP fair one year...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm

heh, i have to agree with Dean about Beck! though i do like some songs -particularly on sea change.
...talented for sure, but calculated, which would explain blandness.

Dean:

He may very well be a rocker, but that's beside the point to me. He's an uninteresting rocker, boring, like, say, Steely Dan. Clever on occasion, but for the most part he brings nothing to the table. He just does his Beck thing, seems mostly not interested in music. For what it's worth, I level the same complaint against Springsteen, Neil Young, and a bazillion other generally respected musicians.

Funky16Corners:

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree with you on all of them...
Avatar 11:33pm
TDK60:

Golly Larry: This show is like sittin' round your living room, like in those days and talking about/listening to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll leave you to Dean, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - You nailed it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
doctorjazz:

Rufus is cool... one of the few kids of music stars who is as good or better than his folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doc - Yeah, I dig his old man, but he's SO different
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
doctorjazz:

I think better...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Funky16Corners:

Rufus also has one of those voices that I could listen to all day long. Just beautiful.
Avatar 11:37pm
TDK60:

..drinkin' beer, passing the pipe, a communal music thing. The stereo wailing. People sitting in a circle, talking. "Listen to /this/ part! Right HERE!!"
Avatar 11:37pm
Erica:

Not for me sadly. Too soft for my taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well Dean, that's the difference it appears between you and me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Funky16Corners:

That is EXACTLY the vibe I aspire to. Don't hit it all the time, but when I do...
  11:38pm
Dean:

I shall continue to Dean. I also happen not to enjoy Rufus's warbling. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy hearing him, as now, because I marvel that his purported singing actually gives people pleasure. What in the hell am I missing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
doctorjazz:

Absolutely...just kills me that this kid of folkies had his rebellion by developing a love for OPERA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - Think of it like pot. Something that gives many people sublime pleasure, yet you find anhedonic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
doctorjazz:

Don't know, Dean, you seem to go for stuff I've never heard of mostly (and I listen to a lot of oddball stuff)
  11:41pm
Dean:

I of course think of it like that, except that I entirely accept that pot is a happy hedonic for many, many people. I just happen to think that much of that effect is placebo. Who cares?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
chresti:

I used to go to the cafe that Beck's mom owned, in the early nineties

I remember a period in the 90s when I listened to little else (new) music besides Stereolab and Flying Saucer Attack

Thanks for playing something from Stereolab - big fan going back to the mid 90s here.

I don't know FSAttack.

i love Rufus' warbling but it's too mellow for me most of the time. lots of artists fall into that category. total respect though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Funky16Corners:

@rw - I'll play some in the coming months
  11:47pm
Dean:

You all are gonna kill me, but I also don't like Belew. He's a meanderer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Funky16Corners:

The best part of this particular song is its meandering-ness...
Avatar 11:48pm
TDK60:

Stereolab were one of the bands that helped get into the '90s (as an older rocker) -also Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Bjork, PJ Harvey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Franco Twinkie:

My good friend Joaquin gifted Chresti and myself some hash he pressed last week. It opens the sky, makes me want to wash dishes, and dance.

crap. i agree with Dean again.
what has become of me?
  11:50pm
rw:

Larry, in case I get distracted thank you for the show this evening! Always a pleasure. As I said, I'm going to miss Wednesday evenings but AM looking forward to Sam's show.
  11:50pm
Dean:

Should confess that lately I've been spinning wartime Furtwangler Bruckner and shit like that. Well, except for that Copperhead record this evening...

Yeah, but Belew doesn't know how to make the best of a meander. (Nor does Fripp.) You can tell he's dying to be a rock 'n' roll star.
Avatar 11:50pm
TDK60:

really beautiful cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Funky16Corners:

@rw - Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm

I'll agree on the meandering as well. Radiohead-there's a band I triedto get into, OK Computer and the one after, but couldn't connect.

Thanks Larry. So the next Testify is on the 2nd.
  11:53pm

Thank you, coel and doctorjazz. Radiohead is a perfect example of the "Huh?" effect. Somewhere in there is something we can agree exhibits talent? I don't hear it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm

not with you on that one Dean. radiohead is one of my favorite bands. modern prog with passion and emotion, and immaculate instrumentation and immense imagination.
i just wish they'd trade off vocals now & then.
