Also what do these sunshine pop songs have to do with winter? I don't hear the connection yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I though of you earlier Danny when I was listening to an all Ethiopian show off of original vinyl dug in Ethiopia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Funky16Corners:

See my comment above...Just a vibe...coolness in all its forms
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Doug Schulkind:

I missed the opener. Just got back from the Mr. Rogers movie. Weird watching it in a theater situated about two minutes from where Rogers lived. He's like a saint in Pittsburgh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Franco Twinkie:

This music makes me want an ice cream soda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm

I'm guessing there will be more harpsichord and chimes to come this evening. Great theme, love an icy pop production
Avatar 10:13pm

The Hill of Squirrels. About two blocks from Jerry's Records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

Love that Guild track, Larry. Such delightfully cheesy saxophone noodling.

TDK60:

Doug -ah, Jerry's still there..

Pure pop bliss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

@TDK60
Jerry finally sold the place. To one of his long-time employees.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear the Association on here or (ironically) "A Summer Song".
Avatar 10:18pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Little Danny:

Haha, glad you connect Ethiopian music with me, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

You were playing those Ethiopiques comps regularly for a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Chresti!
Avatar 10:23pm
Erica:

I think I heard this once before. Hi chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
chresti:

How many marmalade songs are there, you think?
Avatar 10:24pm
TDK60:

Doug: Is Eide's records still there? Did you know Stedeford's records on the North Side? Specialties: soul, R&B, jazz, blues, rock. Gone now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Franco Twinkie:

Not exactly marmalade, bur yesterday I made french toast topped with gauva sugar glop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Matt from New Orleans:

What is guava sugar glop Franco? Sounds like it would taste good even with the glop descriptor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Little Danny:

Dude I'm eating a piece of buttered toast with guava compote right now. Great minds!
  10:28pm
Dean:

I'm baking little balls of potato gratin, sauteeing spinach with garlic, and preparing to fry breaded pork chops. There is butter aplenty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

I saw Peter Allen opening for The Tubes in 1975. He wore a sparkly jacket and banged on a piano in an Elton John kind of fashion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Larry the only Sugar Beats I found is a kids oriented band created by the daughter of Carole King and Gerry Goffin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Little Danny:

Whoa this Crib and Ben!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - That sounds about right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - This is a much earlier thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

@Danny - Yeah, isn't this good?
Avatar 10:30pm
Erica:

Steve Kipner AKA Knock the Walls Down? Wow Peter Allen and Steve Kipner, two future 'yacht rock' artists in one hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Kipner wrote some other big songs for other people. None of them are coming to mind right now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m well aware. I was completely unaware of her efforts as we never listened to much kids music when I was a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

@Danny - Didn't you write about these guys at some point?
Avatar 10:32pm
Erica:

He also had a solo album in 1979 called (as mentioned above) Knock the Walls Down. If you like that late 70s early 80s soft rock/AOR sound, it's worth checking out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Franco Twinkie:

Okay Danny, if I was more articulate I would have gone with compote. Matt, my Cambodian neighbor gave me a big bag of guavas from his backyard. I ran them though a sieve, added sugar and lemon and cooked in a pot. Viola! Guava sugar glop.
Avatar 10:34pm
TDK60:

nice Simon & Garfunkel cover, Cloudy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Little Danny:

@Larry: Yep! Spent some nice time with the lead singer of the Guild Light Gauge and the Collection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Little Danny:

You're really playing some of my dark sunshine pop faves tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Kipner wrote Physical for Olivia Newton John, A Hard Habit to Break for Chicago and Genie In a Bottle for Christina Aguilera!
Avatar 10:36pm
Erica:

Honestly I feel more of a spring vibe rather than a winter vibe hearing this show. Maybe it's just me.
Avatar 10:37pm
Erica:

Yes Larry and those are awesome tunes. Hard Habit to Break was featured at reoccurring times in the sitcom "Yes Dear". Haha!
Avatar 10:37pm
TDK60:

Erica, it's the kind of music we can listen to here by the fire on a cold winter night, have some cheese fondue, then hot chocolate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Funky16Corners:

Mmmmm, now I want fondue...
Avatar 10:38pm
Erica:

For me, that's new age and smooth jazz TDK60.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm

@WR - Warming your hands over the USB port
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Little Danny:

Yeah it's funny these songs all strike me as wintry and cool too
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
WR:

I will now forever associate these songs with guava sugar glop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

Someone had better start a band called Guava Sugar Glop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

Betting on "Snow Queen" and "Our Winter Love" this evenin'
Avatar 10:42pm
TDK60:

..great Lightfoot recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Not tonight, but both good suggestions, but which version of Snow Queen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

Roger Nichols I was thinking but also that early Carole King production

I have a couple of their 45s. Still looking for the album

Matt from New Orleans:

Judy Collins always gets me thinking of send in the clowns which gets me thinking of Krusty gets Kancelled
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Really good album, kind of her transitioning into a more modern vibe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Little Danny:

@Matt: Classic Simpsons ep, even the celebrity cameos were good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Send in the clowns, those laffy daffy cloawns, those soulful, doleful, schmaltz by the bowlful clowns...
Avatar 10:48pm
Erica:

Just don't send in Pennywise. Haha!
Avatar 10:51pm
Erica:

Speaking of clowns Larry, ever thought of doing a show about songs titled or mentioning clowns?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Matt from New Orleans:

When I read It in fifth grade, I didn’t sleep well for quite some time. I already was creeped out by clowns due to my aunt’s porcelain doll/clowns collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

That's an idea! I'll look into it.
Avatar 10:53pm
Erica:

I once purposely destroyed a clown doll as a kid, thinking it was something else. I look back and wish that I hadn't done that but then again my mom is afraid of clowns.
Avatar 10:54pm
TDK60:

this has a Tim Buckley feel, coincidence?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m not afraid of clowns just find them creepy in a more Gahan Wilson way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Interesting you should say that, TDK, hang in to the break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm sure Freud or Jung must have written something about clowns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Little Danny:

Man so much goodness in this set, Larry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Little Danny:

I feel like clown-phobia is a fairly recent thing. The "creepy clown" wasn't a motif yet when I was a little kid. As far as I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Little Danny:

That sounded for a second like Vinnie Bell on guitar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
chresti:

I was afraid of clowns, I thought their skin was poison and that they wanted to electrocute me with their hands.
Avatar 11:03pm
Erica:

Yeah clowns don't scare me for some reason. They're just people wearing face paint. red noses and goofy looking outfits and colorful hair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Little Danny:

Love the specificity of your terror, chresti
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
ParUbi:

I don't get the fear of clowns. Mimes, on the other hand...
Avatar 11:05pm
Erica:

Mimes are just silent, colorless clowns who do invisible tricks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Little Danny:

Some deep knowledge being dropped in this mic break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Little Danny:

Hahaha, Erica, that IS terrifying, actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
ParUbi:

:O
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
chresti:

The electrocution fear came from seeing a clown zapping kids with a buzzer, whenever you shook his hand
Avatar 11:07pm
Erica:

Only if the mime throws an invisible anvil on your head Danny. Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Little Danny:

Mercifully blocked by the walls of my invisible box, Erica

..as a kid I was squirted in the face by a clown at the circus. He had a fake watermelon that squirted water. I thought it was funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Franco Twinkie:

Erica, when my sister and I were kids, my mom took us to see Bozo at a local shopping center. This must have been an new recruit in the Bozo franchise because he was a total prick who started slapping the kids who mobbed him when he was trying to blow up balloons. After that, my sister didn't want to marry Bozo anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
chresti:

Also, around that time, there was a terrifying PSA on TV, that involved a sinister looking clown on a staircase.
Avatar 11:13pm
TDK60:

..there was also the sad hobo clown type.

Love the wintry wind wordless vocal chorus on that Mickey Newbury. BRRRR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Emmit Kelly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Funky16Corners:

That Newbury album is amazing. An odd but beautiful mix of alt-country sounds with almost psychedelic sound effects on the songs.
Avatar 11:14pm
Erica:

Not if the invisible anvil breaks your box Danny. Also, Franco that's just mean. I'm surprised that Bozo (pun intended) didn't get in trouble for laying a hand on those kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

I need to hear that, Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

Hobo Kelly, I was not afraid of that one
Avatar 11:16pm

Ooh very smooth and yachty. Gonna look up this Lowell George song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Franco Twinkie:

That was the early 60's, Erica. It was okay to hit other peoples kids back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Was this recorded near Lowell’s death?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm

@Erica - It's on his only solo album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm

On the inner sleeve of Thank, I'll Eat It Here is a great photo of Lowell George looking like a rumpled mess, holding up a big bunch of sea weed dangling from a fishing pole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm

Larry would definitely like it. I haven’t listened to it in a bit but remember enjoying it stoned
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Little Danny:

Recorded in the UK but I believe a Detroit-area duo. And only released in this country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll have to look for a CD. The album is really expensive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Little Danny:

It's come down in price a lot, a little patience can net one a $20 copy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Funky16Corners:

The opening track is a weird half-hearted attempt at a Lovin Spoonful thing and he also does a cool (but incongruous) version of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Modern Major General'

Matt from New Orleans:

Is that tabla?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Funky16Corners:

It is

Little Danny:

Old-timey Gilbert and Sullivan antics definitely killed some psych-pop and sunshine pop album sides back in the late '60s.

Matt from New Orleans:

This is a solid cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Funky16Corners:

He does it with a banjo. It's pretty cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Dug Patrick Sky, somehow missed his work before.

Jeff Ash:

If so, great! I gotta get around to listening and writing about Rare Earth's debut album from 1968 on Verve, which I had never seen until I picked it up a while back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Funky16Corners:

I had no idea that album existed for years. I'm still looking for a copy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Matt from New Orleans:

This album apparently got released in Mozambique
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Jeff Ash:

Ma is a record you don't often see, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It got released all over the world Jeff. I didn’t realize Rare Earth was so popular internationally

Is Boudewijn de Groot, Flemish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm

Dutch

Erica:

Close enough Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Ah, turns out Flemish is a variant of Dutch, spoken in Flanders/Belgium
