In Buddy Holly's day, both Coral and Brunswick were divisions of the same company, Decca. Perhaps releasing Holly and Crickets records on different labels was a way for Decca to get more airplay from radio stations that played only one label at a time. Motown used that trick with Tamla, Motown, Gordy, etc.
