I think the Dead are not taken seriously by a lot of people--they're written off as hippy jam band. The thing is, some of their music and jams are amazing and beautiful, wonderful musically.

My education was twofold: first, I heard Workingman's Dead when it came out, and second, I listened regularly to KPFK's Thursday Lunch program. Early on I realized that Jerry was beyond talented. Later, I got the vibe, the flow, the groove, the marvelously, even if also spontaneously coordinated ensemble that they achieve.
