Arthur Lee's "departure album" after Forever Changes.
  10:47pm
Franco Twinkie:

Four Sail is 50 years old. Arthur Lee has ridden off into the sunset.
  10:47pm
Carmichael:

I love Love.
Avatar 10:48pm
Jeff Conklin:

@Irwin: Theres a fair amount of good stuff post-Four Sail imho, Out Here is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Irwin:

It was all downhill after Forever Changes. I liked quite a few tracks on Four Sail, Out Here, and False Start, but the mojo was gone. I air "Love Is More Than Words (Or Better Late Than Never)" once a year. Check the playlists!
  10:49pm
Carmichael:

Arthur suffered his 3rd strike in life.
Avatar 10:49pm
Jeff Conklin:

Fun fact: Love is one of the two bands I've permanently damaged my skin for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Irwin:

It wasn't just Arthur who spiraled down. Did any other member of the FC band do anything of note afterwards? Bryan McLean either had a solo album or a posthumous compilation, but who else had an Act II?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Irwin:

Lee allegedly fired the band's original drummer because "he did something with his mouth."
Avatar 10:52pm
Jeff Conklin:

Jay Donnelan went on to be in Morning, who i played earlier. Two great albums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

Jeff: Where is the epidermal damage and to what extent?
Avatar 10:53pm
Jeff Conklin:

HOLY SMOKES JUST 69 BUCKS TO HIT MY GOAL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well, no one would dispute Arthur Lee was a very erratic guy, but it was utterly ridiculous to expect another Forever Changes. That album was a one in a lifetime manifestation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Irwin:

Donnellan wasn't in the FC band. He debuted on Four Sail.
Avatar 10:54pm
Jeff Conklin:

Oh misread, thought we were talking FS. The tattoo is available for public viewings at the xmas party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

Congrats. You've hit your goal. No need to thank me (until your next mic break).
Avatar 10:55pm
Jeff Conklin:

:P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

The Blue Thumb Love was a great hard rock band. They could be excessive, but Arthur Lees skill set was still intact. Plus, they looked real sharp!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Irwin:

Out Here was a diluted double album. Too much filler. Would have made an excellent single disc release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Irwin:

Now let's talk about Spirit, a great, great band with a terrible, terrible drummer.
  11:01pm
Dean:

Bands that rip off CSN&Y? Then you must be a huge fan of Starcastle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Franco Twinkie:

Irwin, Agreed. More Willow Willow, less of Gary Rowels and George Suranoviches whackery But the times dictated double album sets.
  11:03pm
ParUbi:

Hey there
  11:04pm
Carmichael:

Don Conka was from my hometown area, and died eventually from a heart attck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hard Meat was on the soundtrack of Pacific Vibrations. A surfing movie trapped in amber.
  11:05pm
Carmichael:

Irwin, I love Spirit. Was Ed Cassidy a bad drummer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Irwin:

John Densmore and Nick Mason were awful drummers. If you combine their awfulness you have the inept, hamfisted drumming of Spirit's Ed Cassidy. A jazz drummer who couldn't play rock. Rock can be sloppy, but it shouldn't be clumsy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Franco Twinkie:

I saw Jay with Arthur at UCLA. I guess there were no hard feeling after their purported fist fight at a show in Oakland.
  11:07pm
Dean:

Nick Mason...yeah, abysmal. I recall watching that stupid Pink Floyd movie thinking how miserable a drummer they had.
  11:08pm
Dean:

Densmore? Who knows where the crappiness with that band started?
Avatar 11:09pm
Jeff Conklin:

I tracked down Colorado Purple Gang from the PAcific Vibrations soundtrack and they sent me a bunch of unreleased music that you've heard if you've been listening to this show for a while...
  11:09pm
Carmichael:

I know nothing about drumming. I’ll take y’alls word for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
brycepunk1:

Love your show so much! I hate that I have to go to bed now. Thank you for all the amazing music through the years. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Irwin:

Cassidy: nothing like a rock drummer whose fills always seem to conclude a half-beat before the rest of the band comes back in. Nick Mason is dreadful. That idiotic, lumbering beat. A drummer without chops.
Avatar 11:12pm
Jeff Conklin:

@bryce: thanks brother g'night
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Franco Twinkie:

Best rock drummer I ever saw was Aynsley Dunbar. Runner up - George Suranovich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Irwin:

Great drummers: Billy Ficca (Television, Waitresses); Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix); Jim Gordon; Tony Newman; Alex Van Halen; Joe Franco (Good Rats); Dino Danelli (Rascais); Dave Mattacks (Fairport); Phil Collins; Budgie (Siouxsie); Dave King (Bad Plus); Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth (Bent Knee); Animal (Sesame Street). That's just rock. Don't get me started on great jazz drummers, it'll never end.
  11:16pm
Dean:

Jim Black (kinda rock, kinda not), Bill Bruford (same), Billy Mintz (jazz)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Franco Twinkie:

Oh yeah! Billy Ficca. Subdued but steady....and he swings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Irwin:

Max Roach and Art Blakey were monsters. No one could touch 'em. Joe Morello was brilliant. And John Bonham wasn't too shabby.
  11:20pm
Dean:

I remember hearing Fantomas with Dave Lombardo. I dig Slayer, but what a fucked up mess he was at that show. He was to drums what Laswell is to bass: molasses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Franco Twinkie:

Elvin Jones, Chester Thomson, John French, Ritchie Hayward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Irwin:

Franco: Ficca seems underappreciated. Every part on every TV song is worth paying attention to. Start with ""Venus."
  11:22pm
Dean:

De Johnette. Scott Amendola.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Irwin:

Note: Ringo wasn't a drummer. He was a Beatle.
  11:23pm
Dean:

And yes, Collins could be a stellar drummer when he wanted to be one.

Hamid Drake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Irwin:

Let's not forget our own Dennis Diken. A R&R jackhammer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Franco Twinkie:

I agree, Irwin. In The early days, Verlaine and Lloyd could really go into outer space, but Billy kept them on a leach.
  11:23pm
Dean:

Well, then, Nicky Beat. K.K.

Billy Martin, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe, the guy from Spoon (can't think of his name), Stanton Moore.
  11:26pm

Steve Reich

(joking, for christ's sake)
  11:27pm
Dean:

Motian, Lovens...did I mention Billy Mintz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

K.K. Barrett Was rock steady, but because of the electro primitive nature of The Screamers, who knows what he could really do. I never saw The Brainiacs so I can't say.
Avatar 11:28pm
Jeff Conklin:

@yes: Welcome
  11:28pm
Dean:

The dude from Def Leppard isn't half bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Irwin:

One of the best drum showcases I've ever witnessed was a complete surprise: Richard X. Heyman with the Doughboys. His drumming was a focal point. He had technique, speed, and showmanship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Irwin:

Dean: I see what you did there!
  11:32pm
Dean:

Russ Kunkel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

Mel Taylor was very good. Not a basher, but very loud because he had great technique.
  11:34pm
Dean:

Tomas Haake, for sure.

Lars Ulrich, for sure not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Franco Twinkie:

I saw Drumbo solo, then get off his drum stool and tap dance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm

@Dean haha
  11:36pm
Dean:

Watts the name of that guy who keeps rhythm for the Stones? He's pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Irwin:

Let's not forget Han Bennink, the greatest cheese-drum soloist.
  11:40pm
Dean:

Bennink, of course! I heard him drum with Hemingway. And Sven-Ake Jahansson.
Avatar 11:42pm
mb:

A late hello.

Still getting mileage off that Mark Fry tune you played last week Senor Conklin.

Oh fave drummers: Chad Taylor, Joe Russo, Billy Martin, Ches Smith, Milford Graves, so many
  11:42pm
Dean:

Alex Cline is actually really good.
  11:43pm
Dean:

Susie Ibarra
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

I love Charlie Watts! Very steady and unflappable, plus he slugged Mick Jagger and knocked him down. In a fist fight, a great drummer will always knock the stuffing out of a dancer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Irwin:

Terri Lyne Carrington is good, but I never seem to like her music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Irwin:

Honorable mentions: Sheila E.; Georgia Hubley.
  11:48pm
Dean:

John Cowsill.

I don't in fact stand by that, but I saw him backing Dwight Twilley at a tiny club in Buena Park, CA. Fond memories.
  11:49pm
Dean:

Hey! Phil Seymour
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Irwin:

I stood thru five songs by the White Stripes at Maxwell's before the chick drummer dashed any further interest I had in the band.
  11:51pm
Dean:

Mani Neumeir
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

Richard Delvy. I never saw The Challengers, but his stick work on K-39 is real nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Irwin:

Keith Moon: you either love him or hate him. No middle ground.
  11:54pm
Ryan from Detroit:

Itasca jam -great loose sway, tasteful wah... so good
  11:54pm
Dean:

Hmmm, I would have imagined that Moon would have prompted more subtle responses. He was obviously talented. Yet he was excessive. I love him, but I can easily imagine hating him.
Avatar 11:55pm
mb:

Who are 3 that you base your style off of, Irwin?
  11:56pm
Dean:

Drummers that you love or hate? Neil Peart. Stewart Copeland. I hate them. But I acknowledge that there are contrary opinions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
Irwin:

I always wanted to be Mitch Mitchell or Dino Danelli, but any comparisons are laughable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Tome:

Clem Burke !,.! well I always liked him !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

I like Keith! He liked to break stuff. After I take a shower, I'm going to practice my rudiments till the sun comes up! Night all.
Avatar 11:58pm
mb:

Thanks DJ Jeff Conklin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Irwin:

Dean: Stewart Copeland is a wizard. Amazing versatility. Great example of a very musical drummer; uses the kit for more than just rhythm. Love his drumming, in and out of the Police. Don't underestimate him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
Irwin:

Thanks, Jeff, for providing a nice soundtrack to our drum dish.
  12:00am
Dean:

Sorry, Irwin, but to my ear Copeland is a mere time-keeper, a metronome. He has awful tone, no respect for the skin.
Avatar 12:00am
Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, all. Good night and thanks for listening.

Rasheid Ali.
  12:01am
Dean:

Hell, yes, Rasheid Ali, and Sunny Murray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am
Irwin:

I see your Sunny Murray and raise you a Clifford Jarvis!
  12:09am
Bob O:

Favorite Keith Moon story. He used to bring plumbing tools to his hotel room. He would then proceed to remove the toilet bowl from the bathroom and dressed in a horse riding outfit, replete with helmet, sit on the bowl in the hotel elevator reading a newspaper, and press every floor button, just to see the looks on people's faces when the doors opened... ;)
