	3:28pm Linda Lee: the early 70s were just so fabulous. a profitable recording industry was brand new & absolutely everything was recorded. fantastic.

	3:28pm Otis Fodder: Ah, unsure on that version Fab. The original 7" of 2 songs by Jane & Eve And The Creations are all I know of by that group. Thankfully it's comped really nice.

	5:23pm Linda Lee: frankly, i haven't the vaguest idea what they do on commercial radio in the US now.
	5:27pm Mr Fab: Same here. i am thankfully no longer exposed to it much. But that certainly was a painfully funny reminder of why I was thrilled to discover non-commercial radio.
	5:28pm Otis Fodder: At the grocery is about the only time I hear commercial radio these days - or the same-styled-playlist.
	5:32pm Linda Lee: here's a query: was ny commercial radio actually better when i loved it in the 1960s, or was i too young to know any better?
	5:32pm Linda Lee: what i seem to remember is that it wasn't so incredibly formulaic in terms of what we heard. r & b, soul, pop, folk all together.
	5:33pm Otis Fodder: I have a soft spot for late 70's and early 80's AM Radio.. like the songs from this mix here. I was 10 years old in 1979. ;)
	5:33pm Otis Fodder: ..and I love 60's pop AM radio sounds.
	5:34pm Linda Lee: & then there's the nostalgic feeling of being very young that is fully emotional.. :-)
	5:35pm Linda Lee: i think i was done with commercial radio by senior year in high school, '78. i'm enjoying the disco set, though! lots of this on commercial radio then. there was a genre seperation by then.
	5:36pm Mr Fab: playlists were def more open in the '60s. commercial DJs had more input. An indirect form of payola hit the '70s, and the descent began.
	5:38pm Mr Fab: Top40 radio with its' hyper DJs and upbeat music was much more entertaining than the "adult-contemporary" snooze-fests that Negativland were spoofing.
	5:38pm Linda Lee: right, right. i wonder if that helped precipitate discernable 'markets' & so more thorough commercialization in the interests of securing 'market share'.. which made it very dull.

	5:41pm Linda Lee: this set actually reminds me of new york in the mid 70s, which was really a nice place to be, despite the common narrative. a kid could run freely & learn!

	5:43pm Otis Fodder: Mix series I made tapes of in the mid-1990s, inspired by my late 70s/early 80s AM radio listening to the advent of school and beach/block parties leading up my first DJ gig at a roller rink in San Diego in '85.

	5:46pm Linda Lee: it is horribly time consuming to transfer tape to digital, but eventually they will just turn to crap. consider doing it with these. the sound quality is still great!
	5:46pm Otis Fodder: I need to transfer my old mixes. 3 Disko Volumes. I would cry if the tapes break. Literally. Too many memories.
	5:47pm Linda Lee: they won't sound any better the longer you wait, either. if it matters to you, do it soon.

	5:49pm Dave In St Albans UK: In the UK it was the offshore pirate radio that shook the establishment in the 1960's. We had some highly different commercial radio from 1973 which lost its way ( I think) when it became formula driven. Then once again it got exciting with the land based pirates in the 1980's . By this century it died again. Apart from BBC 6 Music and Resonance FM in London everything is depressingly predictable to me. Finding the WFMU's streams has given me hope....

	5:56pm Linda Lee: argh. so depressing. thank god for streaming!! i'm stuck with it as well, being in a rural area with very little radio, let alone good radio!
	5:57pm Linda Lee: the rise of christian radio has been the weirdest recent development here. alongside the christian right's political power it's also heavily propagandized in media. grotesque, really.
	5:58pm Linda Lee: think i'd rather deal with secular crap radio than religious crap radio.
	5:58pm Otis Fodder: I can't remember the last time I turned on commerical radio. I do have an old FM radio here I listen to 2 local college stations on though, that's fantastic.

	5:32pm Linda Lee: what i seem to remember is that it wasn't so incredibly formulaic in terms of what we heard. r & b, soul, pop, folk all together.
	5:33pm Otis Fodder: I have a soft spot for late 70's and early 80's AM Radio.. like the songs from this mix here. I was 10 years old in 1979. ;)

	5:35pm Linda Lee: i think i was done with commercial radio by senior year in high school, '78. i'm enjoying the disco set, though! lots of this on commercial radio then. there was a genre seperation by then.
	5:36pm Mr Fab: playlists were def more open in the '60s. commercial DJs had more input. An indirect form of payola hit the '70s, and the descent began.
	5:38pm Mr Fab: Top40 radio with its' hyper DJs and upbeat music was much more entertaining than the "adult-contemporary" snooze-fests that Negativland were spoofing.
	5:38pm Linda Lee: right, right. i wonder if that helped precipitate discernable 'markets' & so more thorough commercialization in the interests of securing 'market share'.. which made it very dull.

	5:41pm Linda Lee: this set actually reminds me of new york in the mid 70s, which was really a nice place to be, despite the common narrative. a kid could run freely & learn!

	5:43pm Otis Fodder: Mix series I made tapes of in the mid-1990s, inspired by my late 70s/early 80s AM radio listening to the advent of school and beach/block parties leading up my first DJ gig at a roller rink in San Diego in '85.

	5:49pm Dave In St Albans UK: In the UK it was the offshore pirate radio that shook the establishment in the 1960's. We had some highly different commercial radio from 1973 which lost its way ( I think) when it became formula driven. Then once again it got exciting with the land based pirates in the 1980's . By this century it died again. Apart from BBC 6 Music and Resonance FM in London everything is depressingly predictable to me. Finding the WFMU's streams has given me hope....
