Hey and howdy! Producer Snuff Garrett (RIP) once told me that the Tulsa migration started after he formed a tight friendship with Leon - they were having probs getting the Wrecking Crew on various sessions because of their heavy schedule. Leon said, “Well hell- I have pals back home that can do what they do!” And - out came JJ, Carl Radle and the rest of the OK guys...

I will be sure to look them up Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't think so at all. I mean there weren't thousands of them, but there was a bunch and they were important.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Seriously you’re going to talk to anyone else about overstatement?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - What about Duane Eddy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

He’s the only cover from 60s that’s even remotely rocky under the name wildwood flower.

@Dean - According to Mr Webster: " The movement, migration or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland

I've only heard the Monkees version of Saturday's Child. I wonder why I never heard David Gates' own version of this song, if David Gates ever recorded his own version of the song. I'd look this stuff up but it takes the fun out of the conversation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
doctorjazz:

Jerry's boy, never heard this single, cool!
  10:40pm
Dean:

Yeah, but diaspora connotes dispersal -- from A to W, X, Y, Z, and so on. OED: "Any group of people who have spread or become dispersed beyond their traditional homeland or point of origin; the dispersion or spread of a group of people in this way; an instance of this." And to disperse means (per OED) "To cause to separate in different directions; to throw or drive about in all directions, to scatter; to rout."

Yeah, I'm a dick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doc - There's another recording of that song by an LA singer named Matthew Moore who later joined The Moon with David Marks (original Beach Boy)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Well Dean there already was a previous diaspora of Okies during the dust bowl. They were just joining that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I'm pretty sure they were living in different houses/apartments in L.A.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

that Gary Lewis song is on the one 'playboys album in our house when i was little. ("hits again") -i thought they were british then!

Avatar 10:49pm
Erica:

Your mockingbird doesn't sing Matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

i think it's that -now that i know the original versions of most of the songs on that album, it's clear that the playboys had nothing on the originals.
(also i'm just not so into bubblegummy pop as i was as a child)
Avatar 10:50pm
Erica:

How about a diamond ring instead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

...but the former reason is the main thing. i certainly do like some very bubblegummy music.

(but then 7 second delay today was about bad song lyrics. i didn't tune in, but the 3 examples Ken gave earlier today were a testimonial to ulterior motives.
the majority of songs in this world have stupid lyrics; yet he chose 3 that fell somewhere between slightly dumb, not bad at all, and apparently beyond his understanding.)

Ha! Larry, I just looked it up. He was born in Nebraska but lived in Oklahoma City for 15 years before moving to LA in '56. That move is part of his lore. But I guess his trip predates the one you're looking at by a few years.
