Another Joe Brainard book worth investigating is The Nancy Book. I, like Joe suffered with an obsession with the Ernie Bushmiller comic characters Nancy and Sluggo. Joe, however bested me by collecting all his bizarre interpretations into a fantastic collection.

@Jenny - That's a great question. As the oldest, I had to go outside the immediate family, though my Pop had a huge influence on me outside of the pop/rock world
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

Jenny my parents, in a strange act of hipness, turned me/us on to music by the time i was 3-4; but my brother and (a little) my older sister propelled me. my friends had no idea what i was talking about most of the time, when it came to music.

Two memories from 1969 in sitting on our front lawn with my sister and her best friend with a transistor radio on that day in August and hearing the first confused and hysterical reports about Manson on KRLA. The other one was sitting on a lawn down the street with these guys who had a '58 Chevey panel truck with a FOUR track tape player and listening to We're Only In It For The Money and Axis Bold as Love endlessly. I think it was the only two tapes they had.

Franco i decided very young, when i knew meet the beatles had only one crappy song on it and the hermans hermits album was all good, the peter paul and mary and Harry Belafonte albums -etc that if a group is good the whole album will be good, and you get a lot more music for your money.
i stuck with that idea for my life; but i did end up with 4-500 45s...mostly when i thought the album might not match the quality of the single.

Thank you for including John Stewart. Have yet to get any digital copies of his music and my LPs have long been packed away in storage. 1969 is year I graduated from high school and by 70 I had left my parents house never to return. Memories. as Stimpy sings... check you in the archive, early start tomorrow.

@Erica: When I was in HS, there was a Burger King across the street. Since I aced every test, most teachers didn't care if I skiped. I was straight edge at the time, and one of my friends (who became the salutatorian), was an acid dealer (amongst other things). So I'd skip class w/ her, and give her clean urine, (definitely wouldn't work today).

The movie and the record album came out the summer before my first year of high school. They would set up a P.A. in the quad and blast the record during lunch. One memory is this one particular stoner who would mimic Alvin Lee doing Going Home while totally out of this mind on reds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

@franco: I went from looking like a straight-edge/Christian lad (at least to sell it to my parents) one summer to being an indie rocker my junior year of high school.
