	♥ 10:17pm doctorjazz: I did have friends who were "tapers", snuck decks into shows and recorded them. Have some couldshows on cassette (but not sure they last forever, think they go bad). My friend went digital anyway.

	♥ 10:21pm coelacanth∅: nakamichi was one of the best, supposedly. my brother had one -probably not the top of the line. it sounded beautiful and functioned perfectly; but as it got older it simply got weak. (and i don't mean old -just older. my akai, which i bought first, outlived it by many years) it could play short tapes and some brand new tdks, but many tapes it just couldn't pull and stopped.

	10:22pm Dean: Those J&MC LPs aren't strictly audiophile samples, but they do give a ballpark sense of what a system can do. I audition equipment with recordings of acoustic instruments, naturally, but I love the "sound" of Darklands on a good 'table through a good system.

	10:27pm still b/p: I made a few mixtapes in '77. I think one works, one doesn't and one went missing. Have one right here, don't remember if it still plays correctly: Deep Purple, Burn and Highway Star; selections from Jeff Beck Blow By Blow; selections from Dark Side of the Moon; some Zeppelin II and III; and...Steve Martin songs! ...King Tut, Sally Goodin and Hoedown at Alice's. Think I was going for variety and not favorites at the last there.

	♥ 10:29pm doctorjazz: He's got a lot of shows (and high rez digital files), I'll see how many terabytes he fills. (I wanted a Dragon too, but didn't/couldn't spring for one. Of course, my taper friend had one). Also had a Sony D6, that tapers liked. I tried doing the taping thing, but it made me anxious sneaking the gear into clubs, and you had to be perfectly quiet and still to get a good recording, which killed the enjoyment of the show, so I quit pretty quickly.

(he thinks he's a genius in the music department) i asked him how his is coming along, maybe a month later, and he didn't know what i was talking about. (he was drunk) i hadn't made mine yet, so i didn't bother.

	10:40pm Dean: And yet it works the other way, too. I replaced my cheap-ass CD transport with another one. Big improvement. (But nothing comes close to the Linn Karik/Numerik, which is decidedly not cheap-ass.)
	♥ 10:41pm coelacanth∅: disproportionate. thank you. i wouldn't buy a cannondale bicycle either. a $400. mountain bike is excellent and functions beautifully. why would i spend another $2600. for something that...is excellent, and functions beautifully?

	10:43pm Dean: Linn is terrific, despite their almost Amway-like approach to marketing. Best system I've ever heard was all Linn. I love my Linn 'table, too. I've had it since '83.

	10:48pm Dean: I've also heard less than ideal audio via Wilson, Krell, you name the big shots.
	10:49pm Dean: I really need a check-up. I kept mine up to date for years until Linn introduced upgrades that would have run double what I paid for the originals.

	10:58pm still b/p: My 28 year old Trek bike is a beater and a heavy mother and fairly perfect for what I need. You spend $2500 and you get a bike you can lift with two fingers of one hand, but you gotta worry about it and spend like crazy on parts.

	♥ 11:24pm coelacanth∅: i don't think i actually go overboard with anything. some people would say i do, but it's all relative. the most i ever spent on a 45 was $20. an lp,$30. a camera, $13-1400. including lenses and stuff. a bicycle, $600. recording equipment $780. cassette deck, $500. ... sushi, $45. ?

	11:48pm Dean: I don't pay too much for records on a per unit basis, because there are so many great records at every price point. Bought a bunch of great records recently for one or two bucks each. But I spend a shit-ton on records in the aggregate.

Have one right here, don't remember if it still plays correctly: Deep Purple, Burn and Highway Star; selections from Jeff Beck Blow By Blow; selections from Dark Side of the Moon; some Zeppelin II and III; and...Steve Martin songs! ...King Tut, Sally Goodin and Hoedown at Alice's. Think I was going for variety and not favorites at the last there.

Of course, my taper friend had one). Also had a Sony D6, that tapers liked. I tried doing the taping thing, but it made me anxious sneaking the gear into clubs, and you had to be perfectly quiet and still to get a good recording, which killed the enjoyment of the show, so I quit pretty quickly.
