So I should maybe expedite reading "Rings Of Saturn" (been on my list for a few years now)?

Was toying with attempting to restrict all communications to sentences consisting only of two-letter words/grams, e.g.,

Oh, ye of no fi, FU!

Oooh, that looks good, @TDK. Will explore post-show...

  10:40am

Nice coincidence. TDK60's query about a Dickinson-inspired work reminded me of Fred Hersch's series of songs from Whitman. I'd forgotten about the Stevens-inspired trio.

Well, there's Oulipo before IETF protocols.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am

I don't know who translated that book in English, but it must have been a challenge.
Christian Bök (I think he's Canadian) wrote a book called Eunoia where each chapter only uses one vowel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am
Jeff Golick:

The amazing thing about Perec's books is that the French original had no letter e....AND THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION, too! Astounding.
  11:26am

I read a condensed version of that Perec novel. It consisted only of the letter a.

There's a story told by Stanley Fish about a beauty contestant who when asked to recite the lyrics to the Gershwin tune failed to pronounce the counterpart words differently. "She's the only person who actually gets the song!," he said.

Beginning to understand how Carter came to be vilified. Whatever else was going on, he was perhaps the last hope of something that was crushed soon after.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
coelacanth∅:

(not that he was innocent by any means, but) i don't think Clinton was on the team.
i don't really think Obama was either but i think it's possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am

Jeff, absolutely. i've been saying that for a few decades.
(though at the time i, we, made fun of Carter)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am

Maybe Carter's greatest moment, the so-called "crisis of confidence" speech on 15 July 1979, was maybe also his most vilified. It was profound and prophetic.

I think maybe I will have the stream rebroadcast the speech on its 40th anniversary.

I presented the speech on the stream for its 35th anniversary: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am
coelacanth∅:

i recall that at the time the whole hostage affair seemed pretty fishy in the end. later of course the evidence makes it obvious that reagan's (bush) administration rigged the whole release to make it look, to the gullible stupid americans, that Carter wasn't responsible for it but that the captors got scared when the powerful (!) reagan came on.
  11:53am
Dean:

A "crisis of confidence" speech on my 19th wedding anniversary...hmmm. Not so sure I want to hear that.
  11:55am
Dean:

"Schlemmer," I think, not "Schlimmes."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am

it wasn't until reagan was in and Carter was out that i realised how good Carter was...not just compared to reagan.

haha! there are similarities
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:58am

@Jeff Golick
You make an important distinction. It's not that Trump is that much worse than Reagan (which he is), it's that Reagan was more horrifically Trump-like than we seem to remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am
