Also, Headquarters was proof that the Monkees COULD play their own instruments and write (some of) their own songs.

"What Am I Doing Hanging Round" written by Michael Martin Murphey and Owen Castleman. I wondered, so I looked. Fun track, as a number of Monkees songs are.

Hey SBP! Yup, from their labelmates the Lewis and Clarke Expedition!

I understand, Larry. GSM were fairly popular for a time, if not as much as The Monkees. I'm pretty sure they continue to tour.
Avatar 10:18pm

Speaking of Listen to the Band, ever heard the long, tripped-out version Mike sings in the NBC special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee? Much different from the studio/TV show version OR the Nat Stuckey version.
Avatar 10:18pm
Erica:

Mike Nesmith that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't know that version. I'll have to look for it
Avatar 10:21pm

I watched that Monkees special once out of curiosity. It was trippy (and it was a flop back in 1969).

sometimes it's a fine line between -or a matter of opinion which voice is the harmony to the lead (and vice versa) especially with the beatles and Neil Young ...and CSNY
...

Yeah, intertwining leads, like the front line of a bebop combo with the trumpet and sax weaving in and out of the forefront

On a weird sort of aside, I got Laurel and Topanga Canyons mixed up the other day and we were trying to fit the two into musical history. Is there a musical distinction between the two canyons?
Avatar 11:00pm
still b/p:

Lightning Fields in NM? No, made a few brief stops in NM when I lived in West Texas for a few years, and back again quick when a friend got married in Albuquerque, but there's a HELL of a lot there I haven't seen in the region and would like to experience at a free and leisurely pace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Funky16Corners:

I think they were both home to all manner of hippie musicians. Maybe moreso in Laurel, but I hear about both
  11:06pm
rw:

Yeah, we were trying to figure out if one preceded the other in terms of hippie musicians or if one was home to cooler musicians than the other. Laurel's closer to town. Topanga's further out.
Avatar 11:07pm
Erica:

More Byrds. A lot of Texas musicians/songs in the mix tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Funky16Corners:

@rw - Laurel was home to Zappa, Mamas and Papas, CSNY, Topanga was home to Spirit (among others). I wonder if Laurel was more expensive real estate at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Zappa lived in Tom Mix's old house!
  11:11pm
rw:

This is pure speculation but I think of Zappa as a Beverly Hills kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

eagles: slightly countryish pop

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

Coke pop? As in soda pop or as in cocaine pop? Haha!

Coke-pop! That's a pretty wide genre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Jeff Ash:

50 years ago last month, the Byrds played a high school gym in Green Bay, Wisconsin, as they toured in support of "Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde," the last LP in the last set. Roger McGuinn was the only original member left by then, and Clarence White was one of the guitarists. They reportedly sounded great, but a guy who was at the show recalled: "The Byrds were pissed off that the concert was in the gym, not the auditorium. They refused to play any of their old songs. The Byrds brought no lighting and used the gym ceiling lights."
Avatar 11:20pm
Erica:

Agreed. Both Gene and Gram died too young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Funky16Corners:

@rw - If I'm not mistake Zappa grew up around LA but not Beverly Hills. After he got famous he moved into Tom Mix's old log cabin manse in Laurel Canyon (apparently close to the Canyon Country Store)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - I would have loved to have seen that! There are actually some live recordings of that era of the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Jeff Ash:

I'll go see if my time machine is out in the garage.
  11:28pm
rw:

Lancaster! Not BH at all! He just seemed to have some of the personality traits of people I know who grew up in BH.

Jeff, be careful with that thing.
  11:28pm
Dean:

I thought Zappa grew up in the Lancaster, kinda outside of San Fernando Valley.
Avatar 11:29pm
Erica:

Don't accidentally transport yourself back to the Stone Age Jeff. Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - Wiki says born in Baltimore, grew up in San Diego
  11:29pm
Dean:

You know, rw, I've found that people "from" someplace don't exhibit "traits" of that place. That goes for just about everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Jeff Ash:

Gonna transport myself to Ohio tomorrow. Maybe hit up some record stores while there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Funky16Corners:

Good idea, Jeff!
  11:32pm
Dean:

Born in Baltimore, then Lancaster via San Diego (where I was born not long after him). Finally, of course, the dude found Whittier Blvd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Funky16Corners:

Zappa's family later moved to Lancaster where he went to Antelope Valley High School where he made the acquaintance of a certain Don Van Vliet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

Then merely Private Beefheart...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Funky16Corners:

Now I want a burrito...
  11:46pm
Dean:

Nope, rw, I've never pegged anybody (in any sense of the word, so shut up the rest of you!). I have this perverse notion that people are people, which means you cannot (or should not) predict (or "peg," if you prefer) their adopted identities based upon their geographical/ethnic/political/whathaveyou assignments.

I've said it many times on these comments boards, but I heard LF with LG open for ELO in Anaheim many years ago. I went for ELO, but I secretly celebrated the fact that I'd get to hear this odd band with the hit "Dixie Chicken."
