A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Trouble, and everyone. Timely picture - this evening cathedral bells all over the country are being run in solidarity with the people of Paris and of France. Many of them are buildings of a similar age to Notre Dame and any could suffer in the same way (800 year old oak doesn't need much encouragement to burn, once it has started)

Funny about that religion thing. I've always been a skeptic, and refer to myself as a recovering Catholic. ..a lot of my spirituality comes via the arts. // the US govt. wants to cut funding for the arts, you know because they're very spiritual people up there. // more incense for skeptics now!

I thank Pope SM Ken that the radio shows are not redacted and are preserved for posterity.

Priest, chanting: "Oh where, oh where is the incense pot?"

Altar Boy, responding: "I left it in the hall, cuz it's too damn hot."

Thanks for your good work today Trouble.

Thinking in awe of Notre Dame I have always thought these great architectural works show the glory of Man. The creativeness, skill, brilliance of the human spirit over all our thousands of years to build what we build. Pertinent in the expression of "reaching for the stars" as imho they're the only things up there. Shame so many people think otherwise as that thinking has been and still is quite destructive..

Phillippe, really interesting discussion here. I recall the moment when I stopped believing. I was 12. I'm 53 now, and science, the Stoic philosophers and music are enough for me. Don't see that changing

One of my altar boy memories is incense-related: the time the priest in a funeral mass directed 13-year-old me to do the thing the priest usually does: I turned to the congregation, directed them to stand, and I gave the smoking censer on a chain a little pendulum swing in their direction. I was mad with the POWER! Actually I was damned self-conscious and ill-at-ease.

@Kevin I think I was done with it earlier than that. Have to sit around in a hard pew listening to people chant in Latin was enough for me.
