A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@melinda and dc pat - I'm with you. I'm close to 30 years in with going to shows. As more time goes by, I mainly seek out shows that are affordable and in intimate spaces. Non traditional venues are the best - record shops, art galleries, etc.

Z-pulpa:

@ Phillippe Bastille, one of the beautiful things about wfmu is sharing some tastes with some and not with others and feeling our tastes change! For me the overlapping multi track collage in the blind tourist is really relaxing, but also has something to do with listening to it right after work when I want to just pause and rest my mind, as for Hearty White, haha I think he strikes a spiritual chord in my searching heart from time to time, but for months I couldnt listen to him and then one evening when I was feeling down he really got to me.
Avatar 11:03am
đ¢ ÞäŦ:

I have a friend that only goes to see the same 20 or so groups who seem to get more and more popular. So the venues get bigger and more pricey. I keep going smaller and smaller.. Flesh Eaters was the biggest show I've seen in years..

@Devin - I'll have to look into it. I'm relatively new to the area. Tacoma is pretty rad. There's a newish record and vintage shop called Jankuland in Tacoma that does DIY shows that are cool.

Love this Bobby Oraza. First heard it on WFMU. Nice little record label too.

@Tim: Sounds rad. I grew up around here, but just moved back a few months ago. Love T-Town. Got roots down there.

Other expensive shows I've seen over the last couple decades: Devo, Pogues. Devo didn't play long, Bob II was still alive. Pogues were great but McGowen was plowed and couldn't do anything..

Just joining, Spring Break, woohoo, but Arto Lindsay, one of my first introductions to the Brazilian sound with the Ambitious Lovers in NYC 86. and speaking of small shows FMU introduced me to Laeticia Sadier and we saw her out here in a li'l club; I think we paid $15. Great show.

Yes! The song playing to possibly the most teak-jerking sequence in the entire Futurama canon.

Mornin'! Been listening, but busy working. Going full circle to the conversation about special places to see artists, one of my favorites was the time I attended a "Surrealist Game Night" at a cafe in Somerville, MA, hosted by Roger Miller of Mission of Burma. Going in, I assumed he was just the celebrity host the venue got, but it turned out this was just something he's really into. He mostly just gave us the rules, then went from table to table to see how everyone was doing. It was really charming.

If you’re in London, a really special place to see artists is in library of the French Institute, the Fe ch government’s cultural centre. Le Superhomard are playing there next week.
