I’m here and ready to listen to the eclectic musical output of Scott Walker. Will you be including music he produced like Pulp?

Strictly Walker Brothers and solo Scott

Yeah it seems like a lot of musical talent has passed on this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm

Lots of classic era performers getting on in years. Scott was 76.

i really enjoyed the score he did for the recent VOX LUX movie. those opening credits were badass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Funky16Corners:

I haven't heard that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Franco Twinkie:

I can't believe how this stands up. I was in the fifth grade when this was big and current. Now I'm an old man, and it's still amazing!
Avatar 10:20pm
Erica:

I once had a dream of going into a crowed supermarket where people moved in different directions and this song played in the background. I think there was an event inside. Also, the 45 mix sounds a bit different from what I'm used to hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - They were great records, in writing, production and performance. Among the finest Wall of Sound-adjacent records of the era
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Funky16Corners:

This one especially. Just brilliant.

Sun Ain't Gonna Shine had a hella hold on me a couple years ago. Still would like to give it a karaoke stab (ouch! ...what did Connery say about bringing a knife to a Sunfight?) sometime just for fun...if I ever give any karaoke a try.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Funky16Corners:

It's an amazing song, and like many of these records, packed with drama
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

@Erica - Cool dream. I love music dreams
Avatar 10:27pm

Thanks for the Scott Walker!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I always liked the Scott walker sung theme song of the spaghetti western cemetery without crosses(the rope and the colt)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey NGH! My pleasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - There's a spaghetti western vibe in some of his solo stuff.
Avatar 10:28pm
Erica:

Yes Larry but that wasn't all. I remember going inside and there was a showcase of produce and deserts. Not sure if anybody bought any but they did look at them. I do remember hearing "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" in the background though.
Avatar 10:29pm
Erica:

It's funny how songs you know get played in your dreams, even in random moments that make no sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

I always go to sleep listening to music. Every once in a while the songs end up in my dreams
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Franco Twinkie:

Still b/p, Do it! Just watch the video of that song from some euro teen show, and you will want to be reincarnated as a Walker Bro.
Avatar 10:31pm
Erica:

I do that sometimes too, Larry, but not on purpose though, just when I'm feeling very tired and doze off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Scott was definitely the whole package. Smart, talented and good looking. I can't think of a picture where he didn't look cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

He aged well, too!

I will DEMAND a mike with a cord!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
chresti:

A lot of these songs I might of first heard in a sleepy state, in the middle of the night on the radio or television
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Funky16Corners:

They have that kind of vibe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

The thing about Scott, if you sing one of his songs into a hair brush, in front a mirror, a voice inside you will say - I'm Not Worthy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

It's that voice. Perfection.

Avatar 10:49pm

Scott Walker went a different direction during the mid-late 60's while others went psychedelic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

The dirty little secret about fame. Good call, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - That's her! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I read something in the last few days that said that while Scott's music was not psychedelic in the regular ways, that it often created a mind-altering mood akin to psychedelia
Avatar 10:54pm
still b/p:

Scott shoulda sung a Bond picture theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - Good call.
Avatar 10:55pm
Erica:

Lyrically his musically went into a more in-depth, detailed lyrics that make you think Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yes, psychedelic as a reality altering glaze on the everyday. Madness for instance.
Avatar 10:56pm
still b/p:

...though apparently he did make it onto one of the soundtrack albums...The World Is Not Enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Yeah, he's revered as a kind of cult figure/tragic artist, but Scott Walker was a brilliant songwriter. His lyrics are amazing and the music has so much depth,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
doctorjazz:

Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Righy? There's all kinds of psychedelia, especially if you have experience in that regard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar 10:57pm
Erica:

The doctor is in the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm

I never heard sitars when I was tripping, but I did feel like I was loosing my marbles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Funky16Corners:

That's when I stopped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Franco Twinkie:

The landscapes these song play against are so not American. A flavor to peculiar for the times, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

lost you Larry!
Avatar 11:06pm

Uh oh. Is the stream acting up again? I heard Scott Walker, but now I'm hearing jazz music.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Funky16Corners:

We should be back now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Yup
Avatar 11:08pm
Erica:

For now, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

..."jazz" music. i'm surprised Doug has that in his library!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I saw an interview with an English musician (May have been Jarvis Cocker) who commented that these songs were VERY English
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yup, I remember seen some English kitchen sink drama when I was a kid, and feeling like I was upside down. Same with Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

BTW - Even if we have stream interruptions, my recording, which will go into the archive, will be uninterrupted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco (@10.56) it's possible that the majority of overtly "psychedelic" music has been created by people who'd never personally explored the effects of mind-altering substances. (and pretty certainly by people who'd never had Life-changing experiences)
...seems that way to me anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - That wouldn't surprise me at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

(..."Life-changing experiences" instigated within the mind's own creations, that is.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Franco Twinkie:

That is why Forever Changes still hits a nerve. From the well of deep experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
coelacanth∅:

right on -that shit's deep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Funky16Corners:

True, and an album that isn't ever psychedelic in a cliched way.
Avatar 11:17pm
still b/p:

While walking my paper route when I was 12 or 13, I remember composing a song in my head about acid trip experience, mysteries and terrors. It was a few years later I got first-handy in the realm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Franco Twinkie:

Elliptical lyrics and two voices at the same time beat a wah wah pedal every time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
coelacanth∅:

that's the thing with bands like the chocolate watch band or strawberry alarm clock -etc- not that they didn't have their moments, sometimes very good; but often trying hard and not convincing.
13th floor elevators lived it and knew it. easter everywhere is the result of mind-expansion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, The Elevators are as good or better than a dozen better known bands from the same era. Deep stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Franco Twinkie:

Only a few song writers can be literary and not churn out clunkers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, it's a delicate balance that is very hard to maintain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey guys. I picked a heck of a night to hop over to the Drummer stream. Thanks for gathering these.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

Pretty stuff, have to say I'm only familiar with the Walker Brothers Hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Hello Mario, I mean Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
chresti:

this kind of dark, with burning witches and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
coelacanth∅:

so, i'll confess -almost all of this program is new to me.
i'm sure i've heard sun ain't gonna shine dozens of times since childhood (& make it easy on yourself, but that may have been the impressions/Jerry Butler every time)
i never paid even the slightest attention to Scott or the walker brothers until "soused" came out! (being a fan of sun o))))
...then i backtracked and really dug tilt; drift, and climate of hunter -amongst others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Borrowed from Bergman!
Avatar 11:38pm
still b/p:

I was just looking at the lyrics to see if it was about the film at all after not paying close attention as the song played...and, ohh, yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - His later avant garde period is hard for me to listen to. I respect his work/vision as an artist/explorer, but this stuff is where I connect to him. Have you seen the documentary about him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Erica. I should get a side job delivering hamburgers to complete the circle.
Avatar 11:40pm
Erica:

Haha Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry i have not. i don't see many movies, though i like documentaries in general.
and i can easily see how if you grew up with his music...grew with him -that the later stuff could be challenging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Funky16Corners:

I think it's more that this period of his music speaks to me in a special way. It brings together different strains of music and culture in a way that I find to be beautiful and poetic. The later stuff is very stark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

Not to get all high hat, but is this an example of dissonance paired with lush pastoral romanticism? Polka dots on top of plaid, perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
coelacanth∅:

entiendo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Funky16Corners:

There are bits of deliberate dissonance in a lot of this stuff, especially in the string arrangements
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

This works,yes.
Avatar 11:47pm
still b/p:

Avatar 11:50pm
Erica:

Scott's voice sounded raspier in this recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

Okay, who does a better take on nightclub shmaltz. Scott or Tom Waits?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Funky16Corners:

Scott's my pick, but your mileage may vary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
chresti:

I keep seeing his head dissolving to another head from a different angle, with a stark, shadowy background, maybe a lone dancer, rolling around on the floor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

Thanks, Larry. I understand Uncle Michael is also planning a tribute on Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
Funky16Corners:

@Chresta - This is from the last Walker Brothers comeback album from 1978 and is really the bridge to his later avant garde stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth∅:

i generally greatly dislike Tom Waits' loungy stuff; in fact his slow songs in general i'll say.
- i love "a soldier's things"...
