What kind of synthesizer are they using in invaders?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

Probably a moog based on the date
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

I do not know

Granny Spicy Tuna:

ha ha! i actually have a fish-shaped okarina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah i don't think there were many options then. on the other hand it doesn't sound like a moog to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

That’s why I asked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Funky16Corners:

There's no credit on the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth∅:

there's probably many sounds the 60's moogs could make that i just haven't heard. (or didn't know were moogs)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Funky16Corners:

A lot of it depends on who was working the Moog. There were a lot of dabblers and a few people who knew how to get musicality out of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Hal Blaine used a moog on two of his own songs in 67 which were two of the first ten ever songs that featured a moog so it probably was a moog

Loving this mix so far. Speaking of Pet Sounds, God Only Knows was used for the new trailer for Toy Story 4. Just wanted to point that out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

It's interesting how many of those Moog tracks feature Paul Beaver, later of Beaver and Krause
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

I don't know about no moog, but I do know a guitar played through a Leslie when I hear one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

heh, i have that web article bookmarked in this computer and didn't think to check it.
Thanks for the link.

@Erica - Just picked up an interesting cover of God Only Knows, I'll have to play it soon
Avatar 10:46pm
Erica:

Cool Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Back in the day, the bass player I was in a band with bought a Leslie from a piano/organ store that was going out of business. he had to rebuild it (rusty) but eventually got it going
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I wish Brian Wilson would have been able to record and release Smile as he wanted back in the 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

i'd like to have a leslie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

Me too

...if a hammond b2 or b3 happened to come with that leslie i'd take that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

i was answering Matt. I already have too much stuff laying around
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Franco Twinkie:

There not complicated machines. Kind of like a musical washing machine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

i do too Larry. i still want it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
coelacanth∅:

right, Franco. 'probably could make a suitable substitute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

It's basically just a rotating speaker, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
coelacanth∅:

(i still want the hammond though. i don't think i could build one of those)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

I have a 31H "tallboy" Needs an 18" speaker for the bottom drum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I saw The Beach Boys with Brian Wilson at Jazz Fest a few years ago and it was barely tolerable. Between Uncle Jessie mcing and playing the drums and Brian Wilson having no vocal range or projection, it was only “saved” by the sheer amount of backup singers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry, yes. variable speed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

Wait! Was that really sugar I put in my ice tea? You bastard! I can't go home like this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I'd rather see Brian with his LA/non-Beach Boy touring band, a much more sympathetic setting
Avatar 10:54pm
Erica:

Bummer Matt. Sorry you had a bad time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Had it been indoors in a room with good acoustics, it might have been a different story. But outside on the unsubtle speaker arrays it was a mess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
coelacanth∅:

that's sad,Matt. not so surprising though!
...but i would've guessed mike love to be behind it's near-unbearableness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Matt from New Orleans:

That’s a given of course. Didn’t feel the need to dump on that piece of shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

Mike Love is like the Typhoid Mary of shittiness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

Okay now! Gene. The dark Byrd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Franco Twinkie:

This is so nutty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Luckily there was plenty of other good music and food that day and I ended up going to check out Cubano Be Cubano Bop: Poncho Sanchez
& his Latin Jazz Band featuring Terence Blanchard instead which was really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

Good save!

@Matt - Yeah, I have this LP and a bunch of his 45s lots of really good stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
coelacanth∅:

what Matt said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hari Hare Rowe ran the music circle at Occidental collage. They had all the big guns play there. The night Ravi Shankar played, George I saw George Harrison in the audience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm

Doug Schulkind:

Slamming horn section on the Al Wilson trip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doug - That album is really good. A nice cross section of soul and pop. Nice version of Fred Neil's Dolphins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
coelacanth∅:

i'd feel pretty fortunate just to inhale some carbon dioxide George Harrison OR Ravi Shankar had exhaled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Granted I have two left feet but I struggle to understand the northern scene back in the 70s. Bunch of white people jerking around awkwardly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
coelacanth∅:

this is excellent! -though not as killer as Fats' version of "...me and my monkey"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

I saw Ravi at Carnegie Hall on his 75th birthday tour. I wasn't close enough to exchange carbon dioxide

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - It was a great show. His daughter Anoushka played and Zakir Hussain played the tablas which was mindblowing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I listened to that show. I enjoy lots of songs that they danced to back then but a great deal of them don’t really strike me as dance music per se.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Franco Twinkie:

Relax baby, We're going to my shack up in the canyon.

Yeah, that album is pretty far out in an interesting way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm

@C - Def not the Buckley song
Avatar 11:24pm

the late 60s was all about psychedelic pop and hippies, Too bad I didn't live in that time. I would've loved to go to Woodstock, which turns 50 this summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Funky16Corners:

I have a cousin that went to Woodstock. I think it was better as a place to say you were at than a place to actually be. Lots of mud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Franco Twinkie:

Larry, I saw Zakir Hussain playing with Ali Akbar Khan outside at Stern Grove in San Francisco, a big stand of redwoods in the city.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Zakir is probably the best drummer I've ever seen live.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

Franco why didn't you call me?!
Avatar 11:28pm
Erica:

Lots of mud (and hippies). I've seen photos and watched a bit of the Woodstock documentary as well as home videos of it on YouTube but still...it's funny how when you didn't live in a specific time period, you wish you had compared to what time you live in now or what you lived through.

Dunhill was (like Soul City) based in Los Angeles

Which song, Franco?

Franco Twinkie:

California Dreamin"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm

Franco i made a youboob playlist with ...60? 70? different artists doing hey joe. it's been several years and i don't know how many of those versions still exist on that playlist.
