I don't hear classical in Bacharach at all. Be Bop, yes. And, otherwise, pure pop.

I don't like Cooder's MD. For me, it's a let-down from BB's, which is, as I mentioned upthread, perfect.

The Losers Lounge, NYC's celebrated gaggle of local artists, feted their own 10th Anniversary with an all-Bacharach show years ago. In fact, 15 years ago, as they are about to celebrate their silver. Larry, what will you do when you reach 250 shows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm

You gotta admit though, Tony Orlando & Dawn's cover of He Don't Love You is much more soulful and melodic than the original version. Just my opinion by the way.
  11:13pm
Dean:

I like how you slipped Gershwin in there, F16C. Me? I hear Raspberries. Shostakovich?! Huh?! Not by a million miles. Now, BB is a fan of sour harmonies a la Prokofiev, but he wrote *songs*, two, three minute exercises in rhythm and cadence. He also wrote those instrumental tunes that ended up featured as intros or outros on TV. Even those exhibit no ambitions beyond occupying a few minutes. I love Bacharach, but classical he ain't.

The amazing thing is how America bought into that whole Yellow Ribbon thing, especially during the Carter-era Iranian hostage crisis. People honestly believed that it was a historic American tradition, and not the creation of seventies MOR composers.

Angie Dickenson. There, I said it.

I kind of need to hear it. I know and love the Ry C. version. Maybe a little independent research after the show.

i was out of the room. i'm sure i would know the music from abc's movie of the week, which one of my sisters always watched.

Dean:

I think what I love about Burt's version of MD is the sense that it is about *divorce*, nothing more or less. Cover versions are too lyrical, too song-like. Burt's version manages to deliver song and discourse in exquisite measure. "One day married, the next day free..." Love and anti-love described, almost explained.

chresti:

Nice version of baby it’s you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm

The original
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm

He really captured the feeling of PCH between county line and Pt. Mugu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

though i love the shirelles, it's not my favorite version.

Arthur Lee and Johnny Echols saw What's Up Pussy Cat and were blown away by Paul Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

Larry, i was hoping that would float by and no one would ask!
  11:40pm

Johnny Mathis in the offing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Paul Jones is one of my all time favorite singers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Franco Twinkie:

...then Arthur wrote A House Is Not A Motel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - I really want to know. There are so many cool versions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Parq:

A House Is Not got repurposed for an 80s Broadway revival of Promises. Fran sings it when the boss leaves her in the apartment on Christmas. It really doesn't fit the situation, but what the hell.
  11:41pm
Dean:

Same Paul Jones who did the Sex Pistols cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

i hate to say it but i like both the beatles' version and smith's version better.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - I love both of those. There's also a great version by Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
