How do, Jeff and all! Lovely start with this "Helix."

Hard to go wrong picking one from this album, @ljfw. It's so good.

Hey there, @doctorjazz.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22am
doctorjazz:

And this "Vardlen..." must be a live recording no? ... Exciting performance not so great sounding (the opening sounded like it was recorded through a handkerchief, but it's gotten better ss it progressed .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am
Jeff Golick:

Y'know, I'm not actually sure if it was live or not.
Avatar 🥁 9:33am
hyde:

cool set, all new to me.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:34am
doctorjazz:

No applause or crowd noise, but the recording had that sound (not all live recordings sound bad, but sometimes they lose clarity. Often make up for it with the energy of a live band interacting with the audience .
Or, it could just be that I have a bad connection to the Bluetooth speaker in my bedroom ..)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am
Jeff Golick:

This Brubeck would be good blindfold test material -- guess the horn player?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37am
doctorjazz:

Malaby is a familiar name (Tony, Sax, i presume) ... None of the others so far
Who's this Brubeck guy?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:40am

Not Desmond..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am

Good morning, Jeff, and greets OUT folk, chance listeners, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am

No, but someone who has spoken of his fondness for Desmond, I believe.

OK, I cheated, would never have guessed, cool (he did release some great "bebep" albums later...).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:50am

Critics who didn't like "free" music would often ask, "but can he play changes? " That answers the question on this case ..

He was pretty maligned for his Monk album, if I'm recalling that correctly.

Dean:

Once upon a time in the '90s, LA's Pacifica station, KPFK, aired a couple Pan-African-themed shows. They were instructive for me, if only because they were mostly foreign to my experience, so I listened. But an infamous GM at the time, Mark Schubb, wanted to NPR-ize Pacifica. He cut the shows, as well as a marvelous four-hour Sunday morning opera show featuring a marvelously knowledgeable, opinionated, and personable DJ. All of a sudden...poof!...no more challenging radio in LA.
  11:10am
Doug Schulkind:

“Rope for Don Ellis” can have a completely different meaning then likely intended if you consider Ellis’s critical statements of the avant garde in an early ‘60s issue of Downbeat. (Am I remembering correctly, or was it someone else?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am
Jeff Golick:

@Dean! @Doug! (That's all news to me, DS.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am
fred:

I never heard of Fanon in France. It actually took the internet to make me aware of his work, from American blogs to boot. Algeria and decolonization are still sore/taboo subjects over here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Jeff Golick:

Well, America no longer has any sore/taboo topics left, so we had to move on to other countries'.
  11:18am
Doug Schulkind:

Fanon and Wretched of the Earth were critical touchstones during my angry young man years.
  11:19am
Dean:

Read Wretched of the Earth in a law school seminar.

One of George's greatest melodies. The guitar sounds like Bill Frisell.

Jeff Golick:

Mr. Dichelle, hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
fred:

@Jeff@11:16: It's easier that way, right? There is a Rosa Parks train station in Paris, yet only last year did the government acknowledge another extra-judicial execution of a militant in the '60s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
David D:

Hey there Mr. G!

Just heard a really cool new album by saxophonist Larry Ochs and percussionist Gerald Cleaver called "Songs of the Wild Cave," brand new on the Rogue Art label, that was, yes, recorded in a cave. The echo is tremendous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, Mark, though I was just thinking that I still want to do a "highlights of 2018" show. (Played cuts from that Ochs/Cleaver/cave record last week! So great.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am

Seen them as a Trio with Nels Cline, and have some recordings of the trio Did hear the duo on the show last week ,was cool.
