Favoriting February 5, 2019: J.G. THIRLWELL
J.G. Thirlwell joins Morricone Island to discuss his film, television and video installation soundtrack work (The Venture Brothers, Archer, The Blue Eyes, Imponderable and Richard Kern films) and the upcoming public debut of JG Thirlwell + Ensemble at Brooklyn's National Sawdust on Feb. 28. After debuting two compositions at a private event at The Kitchen honoring Lydia Lunch and Nan Goldin, the Ensemble has been expanded into a full set of music drawing from Thirlwell's Foetus and Wiseblood projects along with new compositions by Thirlwell and Simon Hanes (Tredici Bacci) with new chamber arrangements for harp, viola, piano, acoustic guitar and voice.

The foetus of excellence!

Odd that Foetus will be a relief after Micah's show, that was harsh.

There needs to be a few Archer albums.

Now THAT i got to hear!

Listener Robert:

For those familiar with the Ventures -- I'm not -- was the music a deliberate pastiche of John Carpenter to go with some parody of "Halloween" visuals?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
ultradamno:

Were The Blue Eyes or Imponderable ever theatrically released?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
chris:

yes, Robert, the whole show is a parody of many, many genres. like any good comedy, you're either laughing too hard to catch it all, or you're wondering what else you could be doing. but its always worth a watch and listen, imo. great production the whole way through.

Listener Robert:

Thanks, chris, maybe I will some day. I love music parodies accompanying visual parodies thematically.

Fox:

Venture Brothers is a parody of geek culture, particularly speaking to people who are at the tail end of Generation X. I can't imagine anything more clever, or that appeals more perfectly to my sense of humor as a New Yorker from New Jersey that grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons in the 80's, working at comic book stores in the 90's, and experiencing the beginning of the internet age.

Listener Robert:

A good example that took me years to realize is on "Lost", the Swan station instructional film's opening contains a music quote from the "Department S" theme to go with the credits sequence opening visual of the logo's appearance. The Swan station logo is also a parody of the "Department S" logo.
  7:47pm
Listener Robert:

users.bestweb.net... if you want to see the logos juxtaposed. "Dharma" is how you'd pronounce "Department" with your mouth full of something.
  7:50pm
Rory:

Only 10 mins left :(
  7:51pm
Listener Robert:

Andy Breckman did some of that with "Monk".
  7:54pm
Jeremy:

Loving the dark stuff in the second set. His arrangments shine, for chamber group, big band, sparse electronics or noisey soundscapes. JG is at the top of his game!

My means as a kid were so limited - I didn't have Super8. I only had 8.
Really.
Yeah - amazing compositions...
  7:56pm
Listener Robert:

The upshot of what I wrote above is that Michael Giacchino must've been in on the hidden plot and allusions of "Lost".
