A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Mike Wolf: yep, the scales are falling away from advertisers' eyes.
  10:46am
JakeGould:

@Sem: “Seems like CN thinks it is a good idea, revenue-wise.” Well, I used to work in publishing (magazine) for a while, and every delusional publisher I have met, talked to or dealt with is obsessed with paywalls. They sink tons of money into it, convinced they have the right “DRM” model and then it always fails. Always.
  10:47am
JakeGould:

@MikeWolf: Well, it’s not that the numbers are “made up” as much as social media has replaced the role “The Internet” once had. If you think people are searching for your specific content in 2019, that’s no longer how it works. Search engines are irrelevant because non-social media sites are becoming obsolete.

@TDK60: Heartfelt thoughts, but honestly even the Strand is not making money off of selling books. The Bass family that runs the Strand owns the building and they don’t turn a profit on the bookstore anymore. The office space on the upper floors pays the bills.

The reality is pretty much any old-media store that doesn’t have an amazing deal on rent or location is really just a hobby business at this point.

Passaic River Blues:

@Greg R.: Thank you for the link to that Van Etten profile. The bit about WFMU and her son is lovely:

"They've [Sharon et fil] settled into a morning routine. 'The first thing that we say when we wake up is, 'Do you wanna listen to music?'" Usually, he will nod, and Van Etten will switch on WFMU; mother and son are particularly fond of the station's morning music-and-humor show Wake and Bake with Clay Pigeon. (If there were any doubt, Sharon Van Etten's child will have no trouble being cool.) 'I know when he likes stuff, because he'll tap his foot,' she says, clearly proud that Neil Young's 'Heart of Gold' recently earned the boy's stomp of approval. He also has a ukulele that he's learned to hold like a tiny guitar, although Van Etten laughs, 'The main thing is he likes detuning it. I don't know. Maybe he's going to be more avant-garde than I am.'"

  11:18am
John from Florham Park:

@tdk60 speaking if independent book stores I found one at the short Hills mall called indigo, just like Barnes and noble, but only one store
  11:19am
JakeGould:

@Lucky: In the outer boroughs of New York—places that once had great record and book stores—the rent is cheaper, but the reality is digital has killed local bookstores and record stores even in ethnic enclaves that once had a healthy business from the local community.

There is—for example—only one Italian record store left in Bensonhurst where dozens used to exist. Rent is not the whole problem. Lack of a market is the issue. I live in a predominantly Middle Eastern neighborhood that once—like 20 years ago—had tons of music stores selling CDs and cassettes from overseas. No longer the case.

I miss old media stores, but there is definitely a cult mentality around some old media stores staying afloat. Most record and book stores even in small towns do a bulk of their business selling online.

There's value to bricknmortar stores being around even if they're doing most of their business online because it means there's still a place for social encounters centered around the books or music.

John from Florham Park:

@melinda there is nothing like being in a book store and people watching, enjying a cup of coffee and forgetting about the world for a while

sometimes@kevlicki, commenters are blocked and then anyone with a vpn, if that commentor had a vpn, is sadly affected.

@kev I have a VPN and I have no problem

my sweetie and i are always seeking out places to relax and socialize, surrounded by books. when we went to Kauai, we visited more branch libraries than beaches.

@melinda: So, I am going to use your comment to say… I do not disagree with the importance of brick and mortar stores as social spaces. But the reality is for the vast majority of people out there, that social space is not an option. That’s it!
  11:43am
John from Florham Park:

@granny live libraries could spend all day in there
  11:44am
JakeGould:

@kevlicki Lots of trolls are using VPNs and TOR to post nonsense on the playlists. Some of them very targeted and nasty comments. So WFMU has the ability to block VPNs in cases like that.
  11:44am
Ven:

@GST love libraries!
  11:44am
John from Florham Park:

@jakegould I agree with that statement, there are times when I just want to be alone listen to music have some coffee and hide from the world

John from Florham Park— little Lopez Island's library is an award-winning public library that is one of the main social gathering places in this community. They had to build a "quiet room!"
  11:46am
JakeGould:

FWIW, I support local cafes and coffee shops as much as I can because they are honestly the last common space people have.
  11:46am
John from Florham Park:

@granny lots of libraries do that, where I used to live in Florida the library system down there had rooms like that
  11:47am
Ven:

My local library was so happy that I moved into the neighborhood because their book checkouts went up 500%. Circulation numbers keep them "in business" too, unfortunately.

@kevlicki when I'm using a VPN (required by work when I am working remotely) I get blocked. I hop on the phone app for commenting.

@JohnfromFlorhamPark:Thanks! I also miss bowling alleys, miniature golf and even small amusement parks in local communities. I know some of that stuff still exists in some places, but in overall NYC there were far more options to just go out that weren’t just going to a bar and that’s it.

I wish Coney Island had miniature golf. But apparently that is not a draw anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am

there's an indoor mini golf in red hook, and an outdoor one at floyd bennett field

..there are a few indie bookstores holding out in Brooklyn.

JakeGould:

@steveo: You see! I knew someone would say that. Not the same. There used to be far more stuff like that closer to where people live. Red Hook is a pain to get to unless you live there.

And there is one bowling alley in Sunset Park and none in Bay Ridge anymore.

@steveo: The pool hall near me in Bay Ridge used to be a bowling alley back in the 1950s and now it’s for sale. I’m not asking for a cheat sheet but I am pointing out that the world has changed.

Also, the Middle Eastern population here in Bay Ridge LOVES Chuck E. Cheese. Funny right? But it’s a thing.
