	10:09am PJ: Isn't the act of reading Sally Rooney's book just as much an act of showing status (I'm hip, I'm reading a Man Booker nominee!) as any other book? Personally, I read for pleasure and for education, and I don't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks about me because of the books I read. (Though, of course, they should be admiring me for my erudition.) I haven't read any of Rooney's books, but I have read excerpts, and her prose seems deadly dull. And I can't take anyone seriously who doesn't see the beauty in Yeats' poetry.

	10:15am PJ: @Linda Lee: the reduced attention span is, unfortunately, habituated and reinforced every day by the internet, and after (hopefully) people have moved on from Facebook and other destroyers of democracy, that habit will still remain to be broken, because the internet feeds on clicks, and we are like monkeys hoping to get that next blissful grape, if we just click through enough, we will get a millisecond of stimulus before the craving returns.

In the eARLY YEARS THE STUDENTS (NOT ALL, BUT A MAJORITY) GOT OVER THE RESISTANCE AND GOT INTO it: "Yo Mista, I finished that one can I get another(almost sheepishly as if it was another bowl of ice cream.)" Asking for extra books for the holidays/summer!!!As Jim Trealease said once: "Kids don't steal textbooks. Find out the most stolen novels in the school and buy tons!!!!!" Thanks for teaching and spinning = Everyday is Teachers' week!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sadly, in the end, Cell phones seemed to change a lot!! pss. Not a Luddite ..of my 5 daily classes - 3 Lit and 2 Photoshop.. but the cell phone and internet plagiarism has hurt teaching/reading in ways...

	10:24am The Oscar: I read a thinkpiece the other day about how Marie Kondo's "30 books or less" strategy is bad because the point of having books is to display your personality to others, and it drove me crazy because I disagree vehemently with BOTH sides of that argument. When asked about my overflowing bookshelves (and DVD shelves, and CD/record shelves...), I tend to quote Harlan Ellison: "What good's a library where you've already read everything?"

When I don't have the attention for reading a book it's because of brain fog, but when I do I can really get into the book. So I feel like I'm not too far gone in spite of all the time I've spent online.
	10:27am Linda Lee: i think people are objecting to the Marie Kondo's methods of organization now 'cos it's cool :-D also think it's silly to assume that she intended a cookie-cutter application of her advice on de-cluttering. @melinda ~ tell me about the brain fog! it's hard to decipher the cause or the pattern of decreased attention span on my part, because of it.

The brief glimpses i've taken of reviews reveal a generational issue. As a "Gen-X" type, I have difficulties relating to "the snap-chat generation." I could read this as anthropology.

All this regardless of merit (of a manuscript if marketing wasn't a consideration). Perhaps I do feel smug because I read...dunno....sure ain't gonna stop now !

	10:52am zpulpa: As a younger listener I will have to say that I certainly feel very frustrated with the culture of less books and a deeper and more tightly knotted tie between folks social media selves and their, or our, other selves.... I think books play a really important part in the struggle out of a mechanical brain, but it takes practice, different from the lack of practice needed to fall into a clicky clicky hole.

	11:02am Linda Lee: i picked up her book last year when i was preparing to sell an immense farmhouse packed with 50+ years of belongings. read it & put it down. the pressure i was under to cull & release didn't allow for the contemplation she recommends. now that i wish to downsize again ~ from a home half the size ~ i'll read her again. i don't really think her work is about stuff, primarily. i think it's about consciousness.

	11:03am melinda: I'm in unloading mode because I'm probably going to have to do mold remediation in my house, and my late husband was a book collector so there's much to sell/donate. But I love having more than 30 books and feel like I need to work at limiting the online activity so I can focus on the wonderful printed material I have. Not easy since online activity also fills a social void.

	11:12am Linda Lee: @still b/p ~ this is the position i was in after inheriting the farmhouse & then ~ because one person does not need a 2400 sf farmhouse ~ selling it. the culling/disposal process took 3 or 4 months, going very easy.

	11:26am Linda Lee: i left, most decisively, because i feared for my life there, but the full scale transformation of my home town from habitat to investment asset helped.

	11:33am The Oscar: On a related note (to both the interview and the conversation at hand), if anyone gets a chance I highly recommend the Montague Book Mill out in western Mass. It's a converted 19th century paper mill on a river in the woods filled with used books, plus a gallery, a cafe/restaurant, and a record store. Really special place.

Personally, I read for pleasure and for education, and I don't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks about me because of the books I read. (Though, of course, they should be admiring me for my erudition.) I haven't read any of Rooney's books, but I have read excerpts, and her prose seems deadly dull. And I can't take anyone seriously who doesn't see the beauty in Yeats' poetry.

	10:24am The Oscar: I read a thinkpiece the other day about how Marie Kondo's "30 books or less" strategy is bad because the point of having books is to display your personality to others, and it drove me crazy because I disagree vehemently with BOTH sides of that argument. When asked about my overflowing bookshelves (and DVD shelves, and CD/record shelves...), I tend to quote Harlan Ellison: "What good's a library where you've already read everything?"

	11:02am Linda Lee: i picked up her book last year when i was preparing to sell an immense farmhouse packed with 50+ years of belongings. read it & put it down. the pressure i was under to cull & release didn't allow for the contemplation she recommends. now that i wish to downsize again ~ from a home half the size ~ i'll read her again. i don't really think her work is about stuff, primarily. i think it's about consciousness.

But I love having more than 30 books and feel like I need to work at limiting the online activity so I can focus on the wonderful printed material I have. 	11:12am Linda Lee: @still b/p ~ this is the position i was in after inheriting the farmhouse & then ~ because one person does not need a 2400 sf farmhouse ~ selling it. the culling/disposal process took 3 or 4 months, going very easy.

	11:33am The Oscar: On a related note (to both the interview and the conversation at hand), if anyone gets a chance I highly recommend the Montague Book Mill out in western Mass. It's a converted 19th century paper mill on a river in the woods filled with used books, plus a gallery, a cafe/restaurant, and a record store. Really special place.

Relatively affordable, too (at least compared to Boston)-- if and when my gf and I settle down and look into homeownership, there's a good chance that's where we'll land :)
