Wish I could hear George Thorogood as fresh as it was when he burst onto the scene in the late '70s.

Yeah, before his primary function was beer salesman

@Franco Twinkie: It's fun to see how Ann-Margret matches (or is completely wrong) for whatever is playing!

Hey rw! One of my all time favorite lyrics. Back in the olden days, when I was in a band we used to incorporate Who Do You Love into an extended version of Shakin' All Over

I'm jealous. I wish I'd been old enough to see them. It was a thrill to see some of John Cippolina's gear at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
coelacanth∅:

i dug Thorogood when he hit but when i heard all the originals, bit by bit, i realised how lacking in subtlety his playing was on those records. very good anyway, but not for the people into the same music he was.

Erica, the morning show was great. Calming. You get anything good? I could use some gift ideas.

(I'm gonna hold you to that Loggins & Messina should you do another chill show, Mr. Corners.)

I'm going to look for it!
Avatar 10:12pm
Erica:

I have some advice for you rw: Never go out Christmas shopping on a snowy day, especially if you can't drive and take the bus. It was too cold outside. And if you do, shop somewhere affordable. I went to Target to buy some gifts but the prices were pretty steep.
  10:14pm
rw:

Dean, I think I've got a Loggins & Messina LP or two that belonged to my ex-wife. I keep wondering whether to get rid of them. I should keep?
Avatar 10:14pm
Erica:

Also if you wish to know what I got, it's mainly stocking stuffers, video games, nutcrackers and kid toys. There was also a T-shirt.
  10:16pm
Dean:

rw, I selectively enjoy stuff by L&M or L or M, but I really like "Peace of Mind," part of a "Trilogy" on Sittin' In. It's from their debut(?) album, 1971. Really lovely. So, maybe it's worth giving those LPs a spin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

Someday, for sure.
  10:22pm
rw:

Hey chresti, mostly stuck for ideas for my mom and my sister's family. I often make marmalade with the tangerines that hang over into my yard adding a good helping of ginger. I may do that again. Need some more ideas though. Sister's kids like cash but that's a little boring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
coelacanth∅:

Little richard has about 15 over-the-top Amazing, Brilliant, Groundbreaking songs. and that's it! (in my opinion)
...enough to make him the king of rock n roll though!
(kidding...i don't believe in such things. but he did step it up to the next level)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
chresti:

marmalade is perfect, even a basket of tangerines (yum!)
What age range are the kids?@rw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Franco Twinkie:

Stan Ridgway told me that when he was in high school him and his brother Ken got Bo Diddley to play in their gym. He said they called his house and his wife answered the phone. They asked "Is Mr. Diddley home?" She said "Just a minute. he's under the car." what ever they said worked. They got Kaleidoscope to open the show.

@C - I have to do a Little Richard show now. He has so much great stuff from the 60s that most people outside of soul collectors haven't heard. Gospel stuff too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

Larry i'm ready to be edjamakated. i have a 22-song comp and another 14-song comp -with some overlap; and i've heard a few other tracks...so yeah, my experience is limited. i just concluded that because the other songs on the comps besides those 15 (?) are Soooo bad! (like "by the light of the silvery moon"...sad!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
chresti:

what music do they like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - Little Richard's soul years, for Veejay, Okeh and Brunswick are stellar. Very cool stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm almost afraid to do a Little Richard show, like if I do he'll have permission to die, and if I don't, he'll live forever. Nutty, I know, but I don't want to take any chances.

I saw Captain Beefheart doing Diddy Wah Diddy on 9th Street West, a local dance show when I was ten, I was very impressed with the drummer, who instead of the name of the band on kick the drum, had a picture of a giant baby.

chresti, they're kind of bland. Concert tickets might be good... I'll ask my sister. Thanks!

It kind of blows my mind that Little Richard is only a year younger than my Dad.

Don't think so, Larry. All those shows were wiped.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

oh i'm behind. my craptop crashed. and it's threatening to again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Weird story behind that 45. It was a track on their fake live album, they stripped off the fake crowd noise and slapped it on the b-side of Levitation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I know I played this on the Meters show, but I couldn't resist...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
coelacanth∅:

you could also do a whole show of songs Bo didn't pen but that use the "bo diddley beat". (earliest one i can think of being willie & the hand jive probably; and still continuing today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
coelacanth∅:

oh Larry that's interesting. i kind of ignore that album, despite my adoration of the elevators in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

There's a whole set of those coming at the back end of tonight's show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

Oh my....memories of bales and bales of marijuana incinerated while listening to this record (Back in the day, of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

Back in the 80s, on the NYC garage/psych scene there was a guy named Captain Whizzo who did old school light shows like that. It was a gas
Avatar 11:02pm

Never knew Mona was a Bo Diddley song. I've heard the Rolling Stones cover it as well as the version by Australian band Craig McLachlan & Check 1-2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
chresti:

Having crowd noise added is weird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm

i wouldn't bet that the elevators had a lot to do with that faux-live album's release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm

Yeah, when Happy Trails came out, my friend Mike Foster and I were so blown away, we made a vow to see them next time they came around...and we did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Funky16Corners:

I forget how I got turned on to it, but it's such a trippy album, in a seriously R&B-based way. American psychedelia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Yeah. Mona's a great song. Not covered as much as some of his other tunes
Avatar 11:16pm
Erica:

Mona IS a great song Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Franco Twinkie:

There was this DJ named Jimmy Rabbit on KRLA in 1969, and he would play Mona late at night. I would lay in bed with my transistor in the dark, with solar systems colliding before my eyes.
  11:18pm
Dean:

Jesus, I remember Jimmy Rabbit.
  11:22pm
Dean:

Jesus, Bo Diddley sounds here like Steely Dan, which is very disturbing to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Funky16Corners:

His later albums, like this and Black Gladiator are largely unknown outside of funk/soul collector circles. Lots of coll stuff on them
  11:25pm

Jesus, Bo Diddley sounds here like Ohio Players, which ain't bad.

Al Kooper is all over this album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, since both you and I saw him open for The Clash, let's be honest, he really just kind of slopped his way through his set. I was disappointed to say the least. I held him in very high regard.
  11:30pm
Dean:

It was for me a surreal experience, because I was merely familiar with BD, and I had no affection for "old" rock. But it was captivating, too, and I understood the impetus to include him, i.e., to acknowledge his musical contribution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

We should abolish years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

I wonder what Bo Diddley thought of this, I imagine he had to have passed through Detroit in the late 60s.

There is something medieval about the Bo Diddley signature strum, but I'm hard pressed to think of an example. Still, I'm inclined to accept that Bo Diddley influenced his predecessors. (See Harold Bloom, who has argued that earlier poets influence later ones.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

Drake is superhumanly prolific. He has produced both excellent and average work. I can imagine less than immediately satisfying music of his. But so what? He is one of the great drummers of our time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Funky16Corners:

A whammy bar on a guitar can produce a similar effect but only for a brief period.

I credit Steely Dan, again, for ushering in the utter collapse of rock. The Smiths are a good example. Nice, fun, enjoyable stuff. Talented. Capable. Ultimately, though, not all that interesting.

i used to have an old ampeg amplifier that had a tremelo setting. i loved that, as well as a spring reverb setting. like an idiot i gave that away.
