i like how Otis stuck that homework riff into all your loving...except that what i really think is that he stuck that all your loving riff into homework! (or is it that only fleetwood mac stuck that riff into homework?)

Hey Hyde!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm

i have a few very scratchy 45s of Otis. definitely worked my way backward - as with many blues artists.
...i play him a lot on the jukebox at the pub though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

@Geezerette - Otis is a big bridge to the later British blues sound. He brought a lot of 'rock' excitement with his records
Avatar 10:24pm

who can forget Marty Balin getting punched out by a biker at Altamont

My favorite album by JA. Marty, Skip, Signe, Paul. Breaks my heart.

Jefferson Airplane, before the psychedelic era.

Howdy Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

@Geezerette - They were - at least in the beginning - a folk rock band (with a great pop edge).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

i think i like the psychedelic era airplane best (despite thinking Grace was a poor choice of female singers) but some of my most favorite songs are pre- psychedelic era for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Parq:

Hope we're going to hear something from "Pointed Head". Always loved the high-octane version of "3/5" that kicks that album off (after the King Kong finish, of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Skip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Surrealistic Pillow is just one of the best albums ever. I bought my first copy when I was 13 or 14 and it has never gotten old for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - One of the saddest acid casualties, up there with Roky and Syd Barrett.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Parq:

I loved all of the JA stuff, up to and including "Bark" and "30
Seconds". Never could get into the 'Ship, no matter how many of my friends loved them. But in the 60s, my 45 collection had plenty of JA and the Rascals.
Avatar 10:36pm

I wonder if guitarist Craig Chaquico was saddened by Marty's death.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't know if any of you have headphones on, but if you do, dig the fuzz guitar in the background
Avatar 10:38pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, early airplane is the best heavier then air/inter-galactic craft.
Avatar 10:38pm
geezerette:

Everybody staring at the lava lamp yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Was there bad blood between Chaquico and Balin?
Avatar 10:39pm
Erica:

No. Just wondering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Franco Twinkie:

When I was 13 I asked my folks if they would take me to the Shrine Exposition Hall to see the Airplane....They just laughed. But I do have the poster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Parq:

"Funny Cars" was the B side of "Somebody to Love" -- I remember having that "D'oh!" moment when, during my brief fascination with drag racing, I finally understood the title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm

i'm listening on a 13" laptop, no phones. i remember the fuzz git though! i KNEW it!

If I'd remembered to grab that AC for the little thrift store speakers, I could hold 'em up to my ears -- headphonium improvisus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

I remember laying on the floor with my head in between stereo speakers. Between that and playing in a band it's a miracle that I can still hear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
coelacanth∅:

i had to see who the producer was. Rick Jarrard. Great job.
Avatar 10:43pm

i used to check this lp out of the library
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well, They bought us tons of records but they drew the line at driving us to concerts . We had to figure out how to get there ourselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Funky16Corners:

With musical and spiritual advisor Jerry Garcia
Avatar 10:45pm
geezerette:

beautiful performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Funky16Corners:

One of those albums where the ballads are so good they don't detract from the rockers a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
coelacanth∅:

right. apparently both Kaukonen and Garcia himself give Jerry lots of credit for the album; but others dispute that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

The early Airplane stuff is right up there with the essence of the early San Francisco sound. The sound that made the world turn around and pay attention, and, unlike the Dead, they had genuine radio hits, which made them cross over to a non-freak audience, while still being fairly heavy and political
Avatar 10:50pm
hyde:

heh, havent listened to this straight through for some time. thanx.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

Jerry did get on with Hassinger(engineer) though. He produced The Deads first album a couple of months later in the same room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I know this is a pretty jarring switch from Surrealistic Pillow, bit I love Marty's stuff from the 70s
Avatar 10:52pm
northguineahills:

There's a Residents' quote that they were disappointed when they moved to SF that the Dead and JA stopped experimenting when found what sold records....
Avatar 10:52pm
still b/p:

Jorma among those never tiring of touring. Been here in Maine many times, and back again next month with Casady -- "Hot Tuna Acoustic."

"Miracles." Flashback to senior year of high school.
Avatar 10:53pm
geezerette:

I remember thinking as a child that the Hippy / Psychedelic movement was a permanent change in our culture. That artists were at last equal and welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah. high school FM Radio perfection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

@Geezerette - At least rock and rollers were taken seriously. Some of them took THEMSELVES too seriously, but the mainstream was paying attention
Avatar 10:54pm
Erica:

"Miracles", as heard on many soft rock/mellow gold compilations.
Avatar 10:55pm
geezerette:

The money was taken very seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Also the song with one of the dirtiest lyrics to get played on AM Radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Franco Twinkie:

I was sleeping on top of Mt.Tamalpias with a cheap transistor radio watching the fog roll over San Francisco...and this was in heavy rotation in 1975.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth∅:

i did start to slightly like this after being bombarded with it for several months!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Parq:

I'm sorry, but "I had a taste of the real world (just a drop of it) when I went down on you" is one of the least romantic love lyrics I've ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm not sure it was meant to be romantic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

It strikes me as a little passive aggressive
Avatar 10:59pm
hyde:

i kinda like this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Funky16Corners:

I have to go back and reread the Jefferson Airplane bio to see what the dynamic was between Marty and Grace. Marty came back to the band in the 70s, brought some big hits, but Grace was basically reduced to a background singer
Avatar 11:00pm
Erica:

And the band name was then changed to Jefferson Starship I'm guessing Larry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Funky16Corners:

They changed to Starship early on, maybe 72/73.
Avatar 11:01pm
Erica:

I wasn't wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Franco Twinkie:

For any one who has never seen it - Marty taking on the Hells Angels at Altamont is a 'must see' moment in rock music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

Actually, the first album with the name was Blows Against the Empire in 1970. They started using it in earnest in 1974
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
coelacanth∅:

my musical head was very much elsewhere in 1975, 76, etc....
Avatar 11:05pm
hyde:

that was great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Franco Twinkie:

I just saw a new book the other day by Jorma at a book store in Pasadena. I'm sure his take on this whole bunch of drama will be quite revealing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

i was lucky my older brother got "the worst of jefferson airplane" when i was pretty young. that has 3? 4? tracks from surrealistic pillow so when i was a teenager i already knew basically what i was getting when i bought surrealistic pillow.
Avatar 11:10pm
northguineahills:

well, I released some ladybugs in my garden today, and they immediately swarmed me, crawling all over my clothes, hair, (hundreds), Didn't think they'd be active after being in the fridge. Cutest, ticklish insect infestation I could ask for!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I heard about Jorma's book. I'd like to read that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@NGH - That sounds like a transcendental experience. Like a beard of bees without the danger
  11:12pm
Dean:

High school fave for me was After Bathing at Baxters. Thereafter, I dug "Ride the Tiger" enough to pick up a used LP for a couple bucks four or five years ago. But now I love Hot Tuna, whose first album was recorded four blocks from my house in what is now an auto body shop.
  11:13pm
Dean:

And Hot Tuna is playing for three nights in town at the very end of the year!
Avatar 11:14pm

Found some more in my underwear. Yeah, Larry, I was covered by that much, and I was just trying to get a decent pic and release a few tablespoons.

after bathing at baxters might be my favorite. might not...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

I actually got t see Jorma with one of his punk bands, White Gland (maybe 1980?). He did half the show like that and half doing Hot Tuna type stuff.

A couple weekends ago I passed up a used SVT EP (w/ Casady) at a local record store parking lot sale for, I dunno, three bucks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry if they're honey bees there's very little danger. (unless you're allergic to them) even bumble bees are low-risk. just don't move suddenly or trap them accidentally.
and ladybugs do bite people sometimes. it probably doesn't hurt but some people have an allergic reaction to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

I love bees, except for yellowjackets, who can go fuck themselves and twice on Sunday.
  11:19pm

My son and I accidentally upset a yellowjacket nest and both got multiple, painful stings a few years back. Naturally, he was already terrified of bees, so this made things worse.

But a yellowjacket is a wasp, no? You should be terrified of wasps. Maybe WASPS, too.

Even though we need them for honey and to pollinate the flowers.

(haven't been stung since I was kid, even by wasps. As long as you don't fear them). Yeah, yellowjackets are assholes, but have avoided getting stung.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm

cicada killers are awesome! and not harmless if you're an asshole to them, which works for me.

Coel, After Bathing At Baxters, yes! I do believe that the essence of that album was inspired by The Airplane living directly across the street from Golden Gate Park(corner of Parsons and Fulton) That park has..excuse me, there is no other way to say it - a heavy spirit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

I was once stung on the bridge of my nose, right between the eyes by a hornet. It was - how do they say - unpleasant.

I was stung just a few months ago in my armpit(!) while standing at a burger joint buying lunch for my daughter. She was amused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

some moths are actually carnivores, but i don't think they'd bite a human. (others don't even have mouths.)

Franco i read once that "bathing at baxter's" was the band's code word for tripping.

Ok, now the ladybugs think I'm the ladybug king or something, I went to get something out of my car and a few dozen swarmed me. I'm liking this benign superpower!

i was wearing sandals and walking toward my girlfriend's parents house in pa (where they grow 'em big!) to meet them for the first time when an enormous yellowjacket got under the middle of my foot and couldn't get out - and i had to calmly un-do the sandal to get it out; but it did not wait to sting me...and keep stinging me.

Last week I got home from the store and the outside of the back door had about a hundred wasps swarming - it's an end of summer thing. Well, I usually don't bother insects if the keep to themselves, but that's my back door their swarming, motherfuckers are finished! I walked across the street to the nursery and bought this high powered eco friendly can of who knows what, and came back and blasted the shit out of them. It was an all day project, but I won.

unfortunately they will occupy your home if you don't nip it in the bud.

Bees are the reason why I don't swim in my backyard pool anymore. Around Noon-3pm they would fly around the pool so I can't get out.

I've got a small wasp nest going near my back door. Extermination is on my list. Along with about a hundred other things.

i've never had a problem with other wasps besides yellowjackets. (though the black ones get in sometimes and i wont risk accidentally rolling over on one and getting stung)

This monument was recorded right here in New Jersey. Don't say we never did nuthin' for you.

Mostly we've been having mosquito issues this summer. Super annoying. And Dean! I'm building a wall too!

Who's gonna pay for it, rw?
  11:44pm

I'm paying. Those mosquitos don't seem to have any cash.

The first day of school was hot as hell in 1971. I came home and threw myself on the back lawn and fell asleep. I rolled over and a wasp stung me on the eye.

I regard it not so much as anti-wasp as pro-enclosed-patio.

What's the Coltrane record where the solo matches up with the poem on the album jacket. Is it A Love Supreme? I was trying to remember the other day.

The Mann/Sonny Sharrok band (don't have much Mann, have to correct that one of these days)

After spending so much of the past week listening to Marty Balin during his Airplane days, I kept hearing many phrasing and stylistic similarities between him and Felix Caviliere... Of course, Marty had the folky earnestness while Felix had the soul shout, but the approach seemed a bit similiar... took me only about 40 years to hear that but I just never listened to so much JA back to back previously.
