Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am
Funky16Corners:

The one I played is the original, written by the guys in the Changin' Times, Artie Kornfeld and Steve Duboff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am
Uncle Michael:

Sonny was all about trying to synthesize and commodify the sound of gestalt. He was like an ad man trying to sell audio toothpaste to people gazing at the countercultural foment with their noses pressed to the window. Anyway, that's my view of him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
Funky16Corners:

I agree with that view. He was also one of Phil Spector's best disciples. is work on the S&C and Cher solo albums was excellent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am
Funky16Corners:

Slap on your headphones for the guitar solo in this record. It's epic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am
Uncle Michael:

I think he had a meal ticket in Cher and some happy accidents. In the studio, I don't think he was in the same league as say, Jack Neitsche. I think he picked up enough here and there to make it all work. He was a hustler and that's certainly no crime. He amuses me. He deserves a measure of respect, but I think he's gotten more than he earned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, his post-Cher abandonment of music seems to indicate that he was along for the ride, but he did have talent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am
Uncle Michael:

I admire him for his chutzpah. He's an old-school show business hustler who grew his hair and put on the silly vest to make it in the business as it presented itself to him. He made it work. He was far savvier than a guy like Kim Fowley who was essentially cut from the same cloth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am
Funky16Corners:

Case in point right here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
Uncle Michael:

As for the abandonment, I think he's have been far happier having never to have become an artist behind the microphone or on camera. It's precisely his savvy as a show business hustler that led him to recognize that the juxtaposition of him and Cher was the salable gimmick. In my opinion, Cher never would have broken through as a solo act in the '60s. Her attributes were middling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am
Funky16Corners:

I think you're selling her short. Her voice is the best and biggest instrument on those records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am
Uncle Michael:

Yes, it was...but far less impressive than dozens of her contemporaries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am
Funky16Corners:

True, but there was a ton of star power behind that less than perfect instrument
  9:57am
Brianingarden:

Cher has new album of Abba covers out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am
Uncle Michael:

"Big" is the least important attribute for a singing voice to my tastes. For example, I have almost no use for Linda Ronstadt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am
Uncle Michael:

Sonny's nebbishness was the frame Cher's star power was presented in. He made her Keely to his Louis...and it worked brilliantly.
  10:04am
Alex In Illinois:

Is there some rumor that "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man" is about Sonny Bono?

The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man was a good-natured jibe at George Sherlock, the London Records promo man who accompanied us on our first American tour. The track is based on Buster Brown's 1960 hit, Fannie Mae, which also inspired the Beach Boys' Help Me Rhonda. - Bill Wyman, Rolling With The Stones (2002)

Uncle Michael:

A Brian Auger album was my first second-hand LP. I don't remember how I came by it but then, the concept of acquiring records previously owned by someone else was utterly foreign to me. It was like this talisman that had some previously life I could never touch. I felt like a second husband. I think I was 13.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
Funky16Corners:

I think most of my early purchases were used records, but I lived near a huge flea market that was overflowing with the stuff (and my limited budget was more stretchable buying used).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Funky16Corners:

And it's weird, but I don't think I hardly ever thought about where they'd been before, unless they were marked/written on by the previous owner.

Do you have one of those Instant Pots, @UM? A buddy of mine acquired one a few months ago and really digs it. I might take the plunge, but I have two concerns. First, it feels like cheating. More practically, I don't know if I have counter space for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
doctorjazz:

Quite a band on thisQuincy Jones.. PEPPER eAdams, Freddy Hubbard, Toots Thielemans (who plays nice guitar here as well as harmonica, which is why I searched this), Herbie Hancock, Milt Jackson, and more. cool track!
Avatar 11:28am

Yeah, I'm iffy about those, too. And I fiercely protect counter space. If it's not used at least once a week, off the counter it goes.

Avatar 11:30am
northguineahills:

I may have a larger kitchen, but my counter space was larger in Brooklyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
Uncle Michael:

I do not. I have a pretty nice, modern pressure cooker. An instant pot is only sort of a pressure cooker. It can't achieve the same pressure/temp as the unitasker. Admittedly, an instant pot is an attractive multitasker. Counter space is at a premium here, as well.
Avatar 11:33am
βrian:

I would like a pressure cooker. I have a monstrous pressure-canner, but that beast holds damn near a half bushel. Not practical for cooking.
Avatar 11:36am
βrian:

... problem is, I'm susceptible to kitchen porn, so I'd probably end up buying some Swiss-made state of the art stainless steel cooker that cost more than a mortgage payment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am

So far I have stayed away from any kitchen machinery, aside from two food processors (one big, one small) that I use on the reg. I want to learn the Instant Pot but haven't had the time.

The founder of Serious Eats, Ed Levine, is the uncle of a woman with whose family my family shared a nanny from the late 2000s. Better, this same niece had another uncle who ran a high-end audio shop in Pasadena I frequented in the '80s when she was just a kid. She would hang out in the store. Odds are good our paths crossed there. It really is a small world. For all I know, there is only one niece, but of course at least two uncles.

To illustrate how slow I can be, I left a blender on the counter, used it maybe monthly. Stored a toaster under the counter in a cupboard. Used it daily. Took me a good long while to figure I should switch places with the two devices.
