The Dead's original?

Knew the Persuasions' 70s stuff, but this is a totally new one on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - You're welcome! I love this album. I still want to track down their early stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
coelacanth∅:

the original europe 72 version (was there a released version besides that? before all the inferior dicks picks versions complicated matters?!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't think so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
chresti:

I have "We came to play"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
chresti:

I don't have "dick's picks"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
coelacanth∅:

i once worked at a cemetery (didn't i mention that recently?) and one of the guys used to sing loudly while he used the weed wacker. he usually sang the same song, and when i asked him what it was he said it was an a cappella group but i subsequently forgot the name - though i still kind of remember the song. i wonder if it was the persuasions.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, crazy, right? I wole up in the middle of last week with diminished hearing in my left ear. It got painful, and fortunately I didn't have to wait too long to see an ENT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
chresti:

I used to sing this when I was 10
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Funky16Corners:

One of the eeriest, coolest records ever made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't mind the dicks picks. i guess it's good for folks who obsess over some version that they were tripping to or whatever and therefore it's the best version to them. -and the previously hard to find best versions of "i know you rider" - pre-1967; pre-china cat sunflower have seen daylight again.
...it just clogs up jukeboxes and such, that's all; and they are inferior, in general. that's why they weren't released at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

I only have a few, one from the Shrine Auditorium in 1967 and one from the early 80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti (@10.19) i'll sing it for you after a few drinks!

I'm guessing it's different versions of Ode to Billie Joe.

Versions Rule!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
coelacanth∅:

my introduction to the 'dead was "vintage dead". released without their permission, the band and the deadhead community generally pretended it didn't exist. aside from "san francisco's grateful dead" it's their best album, in my opinion. best versions of all songs on it. en.wikipedia.org...
...this is now available on a dicks picks from the avalon (sp?) ballroom from 1966.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

It really is one of the most heavily covered song of the 60s. I'm sur wherever Bobbie Gentry is, she's sitting on a mountain of 100 dollar bills
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti cripple creek was "the band".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

Vintage Dead is a cool set

hmmm, i somehow found myself on the July 20 playlist. the future is lonely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

Bobbie Gentry was one of my first celeb crushes, and the first one I can distinctly remember. And this song is perfect, not to mention what a cultural rosetta stone it was in the late 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

On many levels-you're a storehouse of things dead franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

The country was still in the throes of post-WWII resentment when Jerry Lewis, playing an interrogated Japanese POW on a late 60s variety show cried it "I tawk, I tawk, I even terr what Birry Joe thlew off the Tarrahachi Blidge!" Not everything about the 60s was Woodstock and MLK, folks.

Parq, well jerry lee lewis was a douche anyway. i'm sure he felt totally righteous doing that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

I didn't mind the noise on the Joe Tex record. It wasn't too bad. That's one of the charms of old vinyl.

RE Jerry Lewis - The biggest most diseased ego in Hollywood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Larry, my friend Bruce used to work with Harlan at the Los Angeles Free Press in 65-66. He said at the time, you couldn't stand to close to the guy because he never took a bath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
chresti:

my ex used to work on the telethon years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
coelacanth∅:

i have some records that are beyond enjoyable because of thick crackles; but my tolerance is pretty high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - The aroma of brilliance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Funky16Corners:

When you've spent as much time chasing down old records, sometimes you take what you can get, and that is often in questionable condition. But you wouldn't toss the Rosetta Stone because it was chipped. You dig the importance in the grooves and squint a little to get past the noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
chresti:

as long as they play...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

Yup.
Avatar 10:51pm
Erica:

For me Larry, it's all about the music/audio is the best available condition possible. If I have to hear it on vinyl, it's because it was released on that format exclusively otherwise I prefer CDs and mp3s for convienient reasons.
Avatar 10:51pm
Erica:

Same goes for tape formats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Best condition POSSIBLE being the operating principle
Avatar 10:52pm
Erica:

I don't buy into that whole charm, warmth, artwork and bells and whistles that vinyl lovers crave for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
coelacanth∅:

i'll take all of the above, please! (well, i can't think of any album cover that had bells or whistles attached to it, but if there is one i'm all for it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Too bad. Lots of charm there, but then again I'm talking about rare records. I'd love to hear some of my 45s in pristine condition, but there are only so many of them, only so much money in the wallet, and a lifetime of acclimation that allows me to enjoy them as they are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - I'm sure some hippie somewhere released an album with atual bells and whistles attached. Someone once released and LP soaked in patchouli,
Avatar 10:57pm
Erica:

it's a figure of speech coel. I meant I don't go for the extra stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
chresti:

is there one soaked in lsd?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

There was this show on KPFK in the 1970's that was a weekly summit meeting of all Sci-Fi weirdos in L.A. Harlan was on often. that was my introduction to him. Up util then, I was not aware of the term megalomaniac. There were others, but Harlan beat everyone else hands down. I never missed a show if I could help it. It was one of the best shows on the air back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, he was a hard guy to love, but his writing made it all work (at least for me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth∅:

good sound and album art are not extras.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
coelacanth∅:

what album was it that was supposed to explode confetti out of it when it was first opened?
Avatar 11:00pm
Erica:

It IS distracting thought coel. And there was no confetti. You have a weird imagination. Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Franco Twinkie:

I forgot what a one man band he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm

I don't remember that one. I love all the early to mid 70s albums with revolving die cut unfolding triptychs etc

@Franco - He was (in his prime) extraordinarily prolific. Fiction and non-fiction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Mike Sin:

Was Harlan actually an employee of Disney for a short time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
coelacanth∅:

@10.56 i once met a woman, a good bit my senior, who worked in a shop on the next block. she shopped in my store and with some frequency brought my mixtapes. they always smelled of patchouli and i grew to love the smell of patchouli, if it's quality oil and depending who's wearing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
coelacanth∅:

("brought ME" mixtapes)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Franco Twinkie:

No doubt, Larry. He was like a little lump of burning phosphorus sitting on your arm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike! I think I remember a story about him having a brief sojourn at Disney which he - as he often did - sabotaged bu standing on a table and blaspheming Walt or Mickey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Mike Sin:

Hi Larry -- i actually never heard of a Disney connection until reading all the recent obituaries/recollections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm

I think he was the kind of writer that everyone wanted to hire, until they met him and realized what they were in for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm

chresti probably more than one. there was one that i read about just within the past few months but i read about a lot of artists. apparently the record company vetoed it but some copies supposedly did get out.
