Favoriting June 4, 2018: Andrew Keen, author, "How to Fix the Future"

Recent tech news:

Facebook Gave Device Makers Deep Access to Data on Users and Friends (New York Times, June 3): "The company formed data-sharing partnerships with Apple, Samsung and dozens of other device makers, raising new concerns about its privacy protections." (Zeynep Tufekci writes: "So if a Facebook friend of yours had the Facebook app on *their* phone, Facebook shared *YOUR* private data with device-makers, even if you had somehow managed to turn off third-party sharing.")

Thread from former Facebooker Sandy Parakilas, saying Facebook broke a promise: "This is a really big deal because in 2011 Facebook signed a Consent Decree saying they would stop doing deceptive things like this (ie, no unauthorized passing of friend data). Then they told the world they were shutting down friend permissions completely starting in 2014." (See also the April 30 playlist - scroll down for comments on the consent decree: $40k per violation is $3.4 trillion.)

Good news on privacy from Apple: WaPo's Geoff Fowler reports that "the Safari browser on the Mac and iOS 12 will block Like buttons and other social sharing tools that track you." On the other hand, Charlie Warzel writes, "30 minutes ago Apple was talking about having a healthier relationship to our devices. Now, they have a woman riding a spin bike in front of us and frantically scrolling thru productivity apps and multitasking on her watch."

• Reminder: if you want to limit how much time you spend on soul-draining addiction apps, DELETE THEM FROM YOUR PHONE. Start with deletefacebook.com. Get off Facebook and Instagram. Take off all social media, including Twitter, from your phone. And start weaning yourself off of all Google services (Gmail, Google search, Google Calendar, etc.).

• The future of society is at stake. Protesters in San Francisco dumped a huge pile of scooters in the street and blocked 11 tech buses (Business Insider, May 31). Image below from the story.

• Or do we really want the SF/Silicon Valley model? "Scenes from an idyllic SF childhood: Teaching our two-year-old not to pick up street needles, by showing her some on the way to her exorbitant daycare, along with stern admonitions. They're all over playgrounds, so this is imperative." (source)

I'm not optimistic, Mark, that tech will be integrated to benefit most people. Techno-utopians continue to over-promise and under-deliver on everything. Self-driving cars are just one of many (you mentioned AI) tech advances that will offer up a dystopian world.

I remember coming across Neil Postman's books back in the late-1980s. Nothing that's come along since has disavowed me of my cynicism that technology will make our lives any better.

Look forward to hearing Keen, this evening.

My son called me up from Phoenix Arizona about your show Mark. Thanks for having Andrew Keen on your show. He's a voice of reason amidst those who are obsessed with technology as the solution to all our earthly problems. For years technology, the media, and even the government have been pushing their artificial intelligence agendas as the Second Coming. And, that we humans have NO choice but to accept technology no matter what. Well, the push back is just beginning as more and more people wake up and educate themselves about not just the positive consequences; but, also the very real negative consequences. We BC (before computers) people know what life was like before the Internet, social media platforms of narcissistic performances and social media mobs fanning the flames of intolerance and hatred. Life wasn't perfect; but, at least we knew how to have a human conversation and/or dialogue. And, we sure as hell wanted to be drivers of our own destiny. It seems we have things ass backwards these days...it's humans first, not gadgets, robots, and algorithms...Humans matter, tech's only a tool. Robotics, automation, and singularity is not a given; it's a choice. Each one of us as Andrew Keen stated needs to be involved if we care about the existence, well-being, and purpose of the human race.
