Jeff Ash:

This second set would have been right in my dad's wheelhouse. Thanks, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Funky16Corners:

We'll dedicate it to his memory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Jeff Ash:

Appreciate the thought. This is the stuff he'd blast on his boom box, turned up to 11 because of his hearing loss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

There's some Ink Spots coming later, big with our parents generation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Jeff Ash:

The Mills Brothers were one of my dad's faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Funky16Corners:

I was shocked when I discovered this early stuff. They were so huge and middle of the road by the 60s. My grandparents liked the Mills Brothers. I don't know if they knew this stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
chresti:

My Dad loves Louis Armstrong and the Mills Brothers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

I got into almost all of this stuff via my father. I don't know if he's listening tonight but he'll pick it up on the podcast if he isn't.
  10:49pm

This is the most beautiful poem in the English Language
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

Slim was a wellspring of poetry!
  10:50pm
rw:

Yeah, I also know most of this stuff through my dad (mom too but mostly dad both born in 1932). I sometimes feel sorry for people a little younger than me who don't have any connection with music from this era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, unless you have someone in your life to bring it along, you'd have to dig pretty deep to find it on your own
Avatar 10:55pm

That song made me hungry. Had a coworker gave me a container of a sortof whitefish salad (w/ jalapenos and spices) of fish he caught and smoked himself.
  10:55pm
rw:

I have a good friend (40 yrs old) who only knows the Mares Eat Oats and Does Eat Oats song through David Lynch which seems crazy to me. But at least he knows it!
  10:55pm
Gary via app:

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I found out about Slim via an issue of American Splendor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Nothing wrong with that. If you found him, that's all that matters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Now I could go for some matzoh ball soup
Avatar 10:57pm
northguineahills:

My father took me to the Michael Jackson Victory tour when I was 7, and got a Lionel Richie Laserdisc, but otherwise, I only heard xmas and church music at home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

I was very lucky to have a great mix of jazz and classical at home (very little hip pop).
  10:58pm
rw:

ngh, As far as I can tell you made up for it and then some!
  10:59pm

My kids grew up with some pretty weird shit playing fairly constantly. They seem surprisingly well adjusted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Funky16Corners:

I play everything for my kids. They like some of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Parq:

Great stuff, Larry; My dad was a huge Slim fan, even though he insisted on pronouncing "vaut" phonetically ("vowt").
  11:04pm

F16C, Sounds like a good strategy to me.

Slim Gaillard, go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm

@rw: It took until age 16 that I dove headfirst into the musical pool. I had some help from some excellent friends. I already had natural curiosity, so, once I found it, I was everywhere (wasn't allowed to leave the house until my 17th bday). (parents have mellowed in their outlook culturally, but have double-downed politically. I'll take it). Oh, y gracias amigo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
chresti:

Wow NGH! How is it possible to keep a 16/17 year old in the house?
Avatar 11:21pm
northguineahills:

Oh, I snuck out, but usually just to go explore the woods at night (I was very boring)

Thanks Larry, off to go see a show, Adios mis amigos

We just saw and heard Evan sing "Java Jive" a couple of weeks ago in Ohio. It's a tradition for the Miami University Men's Glee Club, to which he belongs.
