Larry! You're one sharp customer.

There's plenty of Sixties sun music I'm sure. Maybe lots from southern California. (Van Dyke parks played organ on "Fifth Dimension" by The Byrds. That's good enough for me...actually great enough.)

@Peter - Was it written for the Canadian Centennial? The composer is some Canadian Dixieland trumpeter.
Avatar 10:35pm

Moms&Pops likely were an influence on a lot of bands, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Funky16Corners:

Just looked it up! 1967!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Funky16Corners:

I could do a whole show of just imitation Mamas and Papas stuff
Avatar 10:41pm
TDK60:

A lot of these bands, with their voc. harmonies, if performing live, did so before stage monitors for musicians became common. Hence, tricky live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Excellent point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

Okay, I think the kids are smoking weed now.

That's a young, pre-Rainbow Connection Paul Williams singing lead
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm

And yes, some of this strays into the psychedelic!

Of course, I'm no sunshine scholar but it seems all the pop and folk and psych got mixed up, surf too.

Paul Williams sing through a Leslie Speaker? Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm

@TDK60 - The Beach Boys sound plays a big part in this sound

Larry, has it really been a year? I remember how excited I was when you got the nod (I am a long time fan of the blogs) and the show has been everything I had expected and more. Happy anniversary and looking forward to much more.

Yes Leslie speaker vocal, wonder who did it 1rst?! Plus, hear the electric sitar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq! thanks so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Not sure, but this has to be fairly early
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Parq:

I am late on this (Mrs. Parq and I were having dinner), but what a joy to hear the Tokens' "Portrait of My Love". God, I remember loving that so much in its original release, and it all came back to me, hearing it tonight.
Avatar 10:51pm
TDK60:

yes...before Ian Anderson over in Angleland
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

It's such a good album, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Little Danny:

@TDK60: that seems like something the Beatles/George Martin might have championed early on, especially "Tomorrow Never Knows"
  10:53pm
chresti:

Is holy mackerel in response to I am the walrus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Parq:

I think that Tokens single can fairly be regarded as the root (or at least an element of it) of my life-long love affair with harmony vocals.
Avatar 10:55pm
TDK60:

Was that a leslie on "Tomorrow N.K."? Sounds different like a megaphone or cone-? Man that song, T.N.K. is one my tops. I recall exactly when/where I first heard it in '66. Lifechange! yet I digress...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Little Danny:

According to this Beatles nerdery site, it was: theproaudiofiles.com...
  10:56pm
still b/p:

Just looking yesterday at story of the man who did paintings for Aqualung cover. $1500 flat fee and never another nickel through decades of endless reuse and repurposing. Ian Anderson quite dickish in the matter, and maybe in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

Don't think so. However, George Harrison did employ a Leslie on Rubber Soul
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
coelacanth∅:

tnk definitely a leslie speaker, and John singing upside-down.
Avatar 10:57pm
TDK60:

Little Danny, thanks, will look..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - That Aqualung story is a bummer. Ian Anderson sounds like a creep.
Avatar 10:58pm
TDK60:

and inside out, from downstream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
coelacanth∅:

according to Geoff Emerick singing through a leslie was his solution to John wanting to sound like he "was singing from a mountaintop".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Franco Twinkie:

You think so Coela? have to dig that one out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Franco Twinkie:

John Cippolina plays through a Leslie on the first Quicksilver album
Avatar 11:01pm
TDK60:

I think it was common for artists to get paid a one-time fee with no subsequent nada -- may still be like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Little Danny:

@coel: Emerick really doesn't get the recognition he deserves!
Avatar 11:03pm
TDK60:

..have to listen to T.N.K. again. Sure don't recall a leslie sound but maybe they tried to make it sound even different from that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Little Danny:

My fave guitar -> Leslie speaker recordings are those of the New Colony Six. Whom I believe Larry mentioned in passing earlier this eve
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
coelacanth∅:

there's a photograph of Lennon hanging off a chair, upside-down, singing into a mic. some people say it's a hoax that it was tnk; but then, what the hell else?! either way he's singing upside-down!
...the leslie i take as fact, and i don't think anyone disputes this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Franco Twinkie:

Saw Garcia sing through a Leslie in '71.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Franco Twinkie:

Okay Coelacanth, I stand corrected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth∅:

Danny i agree about Emerick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

  11:07pm
chresti:

I think Lennon was also underwater
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

paperback writer (& "rain") represents another stroke of genius on Geoff Emerick's part. (using an amplifier speaker in place of a microphone)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Parq:

In fairness to Ian A (who I've no doubt is a world-class, multiple-award-winning A-hole), one-shot payments for visual piecework was the order of the day in the 20th Century. What happened to the Aqualung guy is nothing compared to what happened to the creators of touchstone super-hero imagery. And $1500 is still better than the "think of the exposure you'll get" that many visual artists (and writers, for that matter) are offered for similar work nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti yes...with piranhas circling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Franco Twinkie:

Many years ago, My dad and I were driving down the street and I saw a Leslie in the parking lot of a church, I started screaming, dad was going"Wha!?!" We pulled over and threw it in the back of the truck. I Still have it.
Avatar 11:11pm
TDK60:

Yeah Franco T. -J. Garcia used one on Dead's 3d LP ('69) on long dark "What's Become of the Baby" -not sunshine pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@Parq - Oh yeah. Piecework/for hire wasn't at all unusual. I was referring to Anderson's legalese response to the guys son
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

Spanky and Our Gang's albums are exceptional. A really interesting, underrated group

As soon as Tesstify! is over I am going out into the street to look for something with a lot of sugar on top of it. The needle on my "Syrup Meter" is in the black...and it need to be in the red.

F16C - will have to listen to a Spanky album, may have heard one long ago but not in recent ages.

@TDK60 - They are fairly cheap and easy to find. Well worth picking up

Franco i'd say try an archive of Jeff Mullen's "noise and syrup" show, but...it's a different kind of syrup!
