	1:02pm Dean: I bus to work. There's a stop one block from my house and a stop virtually at my school's doorstep. Still, the thinned student population is nice, though my school offers intensive courses for professional international students beginning immediately after graduation weekend.

	1:08pm Dean: My residential street has speed bumps, one directly in front of our house. This is a no-win situation. When drivers slow down in front of our house, as they tend to do, I wonder for a split second why they're scoping out the place. When they don't slow down, I fear for pedestrians.

	1:16pm Rich in Washington: Gawd. For some reason, I have really been digging this era of country music. This was the stuff I remember growing up in the rural podunk of my childhood. My family hated this kind of music, too. But it just seemed inescapable. I sure do like it now, to the continued consternation of my missus and some of my friends.
	1:17pm The Oscar: Back in college I briefly had a show that was all demos, alt-takes, covers, parodies, mashups-- basically, anything but the best-known version of any given song. The show's name was "Attack of the Clones."

	1:49pm Dean: Was humming AWSOP just this morning as I strolled from the bus stop. There's Procol Harum in the air, I guess. Read an article yesterday about how the guy who did the paintings that became the cover illustrations for Aqualung got stiffed. Ian Anderson didn't want to hear anything about it.
	1:50pm Uncle Michael: He didn't get stiffed. I read it too.
	1:51pm The Oscar: I'm not sure I'd heard of Gasolin' until I went record shopping in Denmark. They're EVERYWHERE over there.

	1:53pm dan: Apparently, Gaslolin retained the services of Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker.
	1:53pm Dean: He was paid what would amount to ~$11k in 2018 dollars, sure. But the deal in 1970 was a handshake, and the cover image, the copyright to which likely remains his, has been reproduced a gazillion times since. I do think his son, who wrote the article, seemed a little whiny.
	1:54pm The Oscar: Kinda wishing I picked some up now. This is pretty solid.

	1:56pm dan: The Aqualung Artist, Burton Silverman is almost 90 years old and still makes his money doing portraits.
	1:57pm Uncle Michael: Dean, as far as I can tell, it was work for hire and he didn't retain any rights, contractually. They didn't by a painting, they commissioned an illustration.
	2:00pm Dean: Work for hire only applies when the artist is an employee working within the scope of his/her employment. According to Silverman, who was not an employee of Chrysalis or Tull's management, there was no contract. Not good business sense, for sure, but these circumstances don't affect copyright.
	2:02pm Dean: Now, it could be that pre-1976 Copyright Act required registration to claim copyright. If that's so, then the outcome could be different. The article didn't address any of this.
	2:04pm Dean: [There are exceptions to the work made for hire rules that permit non-employees to produce them, but I'm pretty sure they require a written contract.]

	2:35pm Dean: I once had a taco de sesos at LA's King Taco. Brains. Explains why I'm so smatr.

	2:44pm Rich in Washington: I sure wished we had the taco trucks on every street corner and a real president.
	2:45pm Rich in Washington: We only have one taco stand in my town that does pastor meat right.
	2:47pm Rich in Washington: Most ones around here, if they even HAVE al pastor on their menus, they just take regular carnitas meat and slather it with a sort of al pastor like sauce. Not the same as the long marinated and roasted pork.
	2:47pm Uncle Michael: The place that's opening is a mexican grocery and restaurant that has three locations in Kansas City. There store here will be bigger tan any of the others. The store isn't opening for another 2-3 weeks. They've spent 13 months remodeling a derelict supermarket that had been closed for over 15 years.
	2:51pm Dean: My favorite Mexican place in these parts--there are more in Southern California--is Mercado del Sol in Concord, which entails a bit of a drive for us. Not sure on which axis they prepare their pastor, but the complete package is wonderful.
	2:52pm burke: Makes me imagine how much more dereliction the urban midwest would have if it weren't for the Mexican demographic boom of the past couple decades.
	2:54pm Uncle Michael: ain't that the truth
	2:55pm Dean: I'm thinking now of a joint in Pico Rivera, east of LA, where my mother-in-law went to buy masa one Christmas. It was a restaurant and, being in LA County, it was required to post a health dep't ranking (A, B, etc.). There was no posting, but the clientele when we arrived were county sheriffs. A good sign. The chile verde was out of this world.

	1:16pm Rich in Washington: Gawd. For some reason, I have really been digging this era of country music. This was the stuff I remember growing up in the rural podunk of my childhood. My family hated this kind of music, too. But it just seemed inescapable. I sure do like it now, to the continued consternation of my missus and some of my friends.

	1:53pm Dean: He was paid what would amount to ~$11k in 2018 dollars, sure. But the deal in 1970 was a handshake, and the cover image, the copyright to which likely remains his, has been reproduced a gazillion times since. I do think his son, who wrote the article, seemed a little whiny.

	1:57pm Uncle Michael: Dean, as far as I can tell, it was work for hire and he didn't retain any rights, contractually. They didn't by a painting, they commissioned an illustration.
	2:00pm Dean: Work for hire only applies when the artist is an employee working within the scope of his/her employment. According to Silverman, who was not an employee of Chrysalis or Tull's management, there was no contract. Not good business sense, for sure, but these circumstances don't affect copyright.
	2:02pm Dean: Now, it could be that pre-1976 Copyright Act required registration to claim copyright. If that's so, then the outcome could be different. The article didn't address any of this.

	2:47pm Uncle Michael: The place that's opening is a mexican grocery and restaurant that has three locations in Kansas City. There store here will be bigger tan any of the others. The store isn't opening for another 2-3 weeks. They've spent 13 months remodeling a derelict supermarket that had been closed for over 15 years.
	2:51pm Dean: My favorite Mexican place in these parts--there are more in Southern California--is Mercado del Sol in Concord, which entails a bit of a drive for us. Not sure on which axis they prepare their pastor, but the complete package is wonderful.
	2:52pm burke: Makes me imagine how much more dereliction the urban midwest would have if it weren't for the Mexican demographic boom of the past couple decades.

	2:55pm Dean: I'm thinking now of a joint in Pico Rivera, east of LA, where my mother-in-law went to buy masa one Christmas. It was a restaurant and, being in LA County, it was required to post a health dep't ranking (A, B, etc.). There was no posting, but the clientele when we arrived were county sheriffs. A good sign. The chile verde was out of this world.
