Why, hello again, sir!

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Funky16Corners:

Fancy seeing you here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Funky16Corners:

It seems like it was only this afternoon...

little danny:

Hey Larry, hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Funky16Corners:

I really feel like I ought to be drinking something stronger than lemon seltzer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Jeff Ash:

That NF Porter finisher still pleasantly rattling around in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Funky16Corners:

Such a great record!

In a few months of using this phone and its keypads and corrects and weird-ass behaviors, I’ve come to harbor a hot hot hate for it. The first comment I was trying and retrying to type, I gave up on.... and almost this one too. This is my testimony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Little Danny:

Such a pitch-perfect encapsulation of the UK mod blues aesthetic, that Right Track compilation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP, my large thumbs are perpetually at war with my iPhone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Funky16Corners:

@Danny - Yeah, that's one that I had to pick up even though I had a bunch of it on vinyl already, Really well done
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Parq:

Hi, Larry. Welcome back. (Or should you say that to me?) In the interim, I listened to Drummer-Stream alum Matt Fiveash's birthday tribute to Little Walter, so it's a blues evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

I want to check that out. Love Little Walter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Little Danny:

Annnnd "Dark Was the Night..." was the inspiring force behind Ry Cooder's soundtrack to "Paris, Texas"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Funky16Corners:

I did not know that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Parq:

Was Dave Van Ronk the coolest human being ever to walk the face of the earth? I say he's definitely in the running.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

I would certainly put him up there. Have you read his autobiography?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Parq:

No, I didn't even know he had done one! Post a link if you've got it handy.

Funky16Corners:

It's amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Jeff Ash:

Dave Van Ronk used to play a dive bar in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, a couple of times a year when I was going to college there in the late '70s. I confess I had no idea who he was at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

i never got to see him in person, much to my great regret.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Jeff Ash:

I never saw him, either. It seemed like a place, and a gig, I just wasn't cool enough to be part of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

I missed out on some cool things for the very same reason. I don't think we had to worry.
  11:01pm
Doctorjazz:

I saw Van Ronkonkoma in some Village dive years back, though I don't think I knew much more about him than he was somehow connected to Dylan.
  11:02pm
Doctorjazz:

Van Ronkonkoma, like that spell check error!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

One of the problems is that the stylistic breadth of his career has not been well served by reissues.
  11:06pm
Doctorjazz:

Missed the first half of the show, it was a goodn, have to check it out Tomorrow.
Love his Clouds take! What a great/bad voice, love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, I love to play this for people. It's so emotional, and so different from most of the famous versions.
  11:08pm
Doctorjazz:

He always sounds like he's battling his vocal cords to hit his notes, but he gets it right in the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Funky16Corners:

The sound of whiskey and cigarettes
  11:14pm
rw:

Hey! Just got here. Damn, I missed a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Funky16Corners:

Listen to the lyrics on this one
  11:16pm
rw:

Did hear most of Clouds. Man, that version is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, a big fave
  11:22pm
Doctorjazz:

Take that, Jim Morrison!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Funky16Corners:

Brecht/Weill is one of my personal obsessions. Some night I'm going yo let it rip here on Testify
  11:26pm
Doctorjazz:

I think I need this album...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Funky16Corners:

I think you can still find it around. I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Funky16Corners:

This is one of those CDs that I lost between apartments and had to repurchase

Well, I made it! Good to hear you again, twice in the same day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey NGH! Good to be heard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm

In case anyone from out of the area is wondering what's going on, these are all New Jersey town names
  11:31pm
Doctorjazz:

Yup, it's in my Amazon carr
Avatar 11:37pm
northguineahills:

How am I not familiar w/ Van Ronk? (although I believe I've heard Garden State Stomp before on WFMU).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Funky16Corners:

I guess it depends on your proximity to/interest in the NYC folk scene of the early 60s, from whence he emerged
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Funky16Corners:

Or if you'd seen Inside Llewyn Davis which borrows a lot of his life
  11:44pm
Dean:

Van Ronk gets a lot of play on a longstanding KPFA folk music show, Across the Great Divide. (Kate Wolf, props!)

Just played a bunch of Jimmy LaFave at home tonight. Would love to hear him on WFMU now and then.
  11:45pm
Doctorjazz:

The retooled hip Darin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Funky16Corners:

It always amazes me that there's only 6 or seven years between that stuff and Splish Splash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Funky16Corners:

Just checked, more like 9 years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Funky16Corners:

Still, a pretty big spread
Avatar 11:46pm
northguineahills:

That's the problem, Larry, I know and own plenty of the artists Greenwich Village folk scene, and have biographies. How did I miss him???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Jeff Ash:

Thanks, Larry, I'm out!
  11:47pm
Dean:

And very happy to hear Testify! twice in a day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Funky16Corners:

@NGH - I don't know. I guess he was kindof left behind by history, but there's a lot of stuff out there. Unfortunately the only career spanning collection was put out in 1992 on a really small label
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I also posted a link above to his autobiography, 'The Mayor of Macdougal Street. A great read.
  11:54pm
Doctorjazz:

Thanks Larry, great show! Isn't Testifying twice some kind of Double Jeopardy?
Night all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite Doc!
Avatar 11:55pm
northguineahills:

One of my favorite covers of Down By the River is by Low. This one hits well too.

Thanks for the link, Larry, and if I don't get back in time, thanks for the double duty today!
  11:58pm
Dean:

I'm pretty sure that "White Summer" is taken from a public domain folk tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
Funky16Corners:

It is indeed, as were the other twp songs I mentioned, but Page picked them right out of Jansch's basket
  11:59pm
rw:

Thank you F16C! Sleep well tonight. You deserve it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
