Hello, Larry, Mary. Here for the funkafication.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm

Indeed, though it predates it by six or so years. Time to get the lawyers on the phone!

Hi Sem!

So, where you come from, does "Larry" rhyme with "Mary?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm

My kindergarten teacher Mrs Gamble, who hailed from the south rhymed Larry and Mary all the time

Well hi, Larry! And Mary, enjoy the sunshine. Unless it's raining, in which case get off the road and enjoy a good book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm

Levels seem ok on this end. I always run it on my phone simultaneously and it sounds ok there, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Funky16Corners:

The mix on this album - esp the live tracks - is a little off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Parq:

"The Penguin" sounded a little muddy, but that may just be the way it's mixed. Live "Swingin'" sounds fine to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Funky16Corners:

Very treble-y, and the vocal mix is a little weird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Funky16Corners:

One of the problems with various vinyl sources, esp between 45s and LPs. Wide range of levels and quality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Funky16Corners:

Trying to adjust on the fly as much as possible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Parq:

F16C, that's probably the way it was mixed at the venue, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, I think so. This album is a mix of live and studio stuff and there's def a difference

βrian:

It occurs to me, you can't pull out the stops with a Hammond organ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Funky16Corners:

Isn't that what you do? I thought that was the source of the saying.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Funky16Corners:

hey Connie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Parq:

F16C, I think the expression refers to organs of earlier origin, like big church organs or Wurlitzers in the old movie palaces.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Parq:

Stop-splaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Funky16Corners:

Ah, OK.
Avatar 1:05pm
βrian:

Yep, the miracle of the Hammond was that it had no pipes.
Heh. So we gotta get creative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Funky16Corners:

I actually have a book on the Hammond in my to-be-read pile. I should dig into it. I never knew the stops were pipe-related.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Funky16Corners:

Gonna do an all-Hammond show one of these Wednesdays.
Avatar 1:12pm
βrian:

I guess there are stop analogs that have a similar effect on Hammonds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Funky16Corners:

It's probably all buttons now on most electronic keyboards. I remember reading an interview years ago with Jimmy Smith where he said that unless you were playing a B3 and the pedals, you weren't really playing the organ.
  1:17pm
JakeGould:

@MaryWing: Hey! Happy running into you at the record fair. Find anything good?

I scored a vinyl version of Devo’s “Freedom of Choice.” Definitely different and better than the CD or MP3 version. Someone was nice enough to put it up on YouTube. www.youtube.com...
  1:18pm
JakeGould:

Also… Hello Larry!
Avatar 1:20pm
βrian:

I'm from the midwest. It took me a while to hear the difference between "Larry" and "Mary." It finally stuck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Funky16Corners:

Hi Jake!
Avatar 1:23pm
βrian:

Is "cornbread" a euphemism, here? Just curious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Parq:

As the great Daniel Pinkwater once said, sometimes a corn muffin is just a corn muffin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - I'm pretty sue it's straight up soul food in these cases.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Funky16Corners:

'sure'
Avatar 1:25pm
βrian:

Cuz I really like cornbread, but I don't want to get in trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Funky16Corners:

I guess it depends on who you ask for 'cornbread' and under what circumstances
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Funky16Corners:

Like if you're wiggling your eyebrows and smirking, you might get smacked
  1:27pm
rw:

Skimming the comments, yes, I've always understood pulling all the stops as opening up all the pipes on an organ for maximum sound.

And βrian, that cornbread reference had me rethinking a little too.
  1:28pm
JakeGould:

I knew a white Jewish girl who grew up in Washington Heights who was nicknamed “Cornbread” by her classmates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Funky16Corners:

Why's that?
  1:29pm
rw:

I had a piece of cornbread go bad sitting covered on the counter the other day. Smelled sour. I think it was fermenting.
Avatar 1:30pm
CTEmpress:

Little Richard: never fails!
Avatar 1:30pm
βrian:

I'd take cornbread over white bread, any day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Parq:

If I may be allowed to muddy the waters further, there used to be a Jewish bakery near where I was living in the mid 80s, where a certain sort of rye bread was called cornbread. I asked why once, and the answer was some obscure story involving a guy named Cohen.
  1:31pm
JakeGould:

@Funky16Corners: I guess it was a racially loaded nickname she learned to accept. *shrugs*
  1:32pm
JakeGould:

@Parq: Cohenbrie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Corn rye is actually delicious
Avatar 1:32pm
βrian:

Possibly, it dates back to corn being a general term for grain. Barleycorn, for example.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Funky16Corners:

@Connie - Soulful Little Richard is the best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm

Hey Madison! I used to live on South Hancock Street back in the 1990s. Lovely apartment in an old house. Occasionally bats would show up from the basement. I often mistook them for a few seconds as pigeons until I realized they were bats.
