geezerette: Did you ever dine at Chianti on Melrose? It was all about banquettes and light so low the waiter arrived with a pen light to assist with the menu.

Hi Dean!

@geez: Totally agree. Chico is one of my fave drummers. And fave jazz leaders, period

Hey, speaking of musical shufflings off of the mortal coil, I was veryyy surprised to learn recently that one of the highest-ranking pop tunes on the Dreadful Charts was a remake: Seasons In The Sun. It's from something Jacques Brel adapted! I heard an old version a few weeks ago and was thrown for a (nonfatal) loop.
Avatar 10:24pm

Dean, yeah! That was a glamorous place. :)
Avatar 10:25pm

...and the aquarium at MUSE.
  10:25pm

Yep, it was. Went there only once, but dined next door (in the kitchen) at Cucina many times. It was Celestino Drago's baby. I believe he has a decent restaurant downtown these days.

Cucina was, literally, the Chianti kitchen. Don't know MUSE.

Avatar 10:34pm

Evan Kleiman is a local treasure.
Muse is long gon but there was a gigantic illuminated aquarium at the bar filled with tropical fish. It was mesmerizing, especially after a drink. Living painting...Muse was on Melrose in Hollywood.
  10:37pm
Dean:

Drago Centro, just west of LAPL.

Dined long ago at Michel Richard's Citron on Melrose, too. Later, at his Santa Barbara Citronelle. Just a few years ago--he died in late 2016--I was in DC, where I had lunch at Central Michel Richard in D.C. I sat at the bar. At a table adjacent to the bar, a large man wearing a toque consuming a huge bowl of what looked like a rich pasta Bolognese. It was MR, so I introduced myself and praised the meals I'd had at his restaurants. He seemed to appreciate the reference to his first flagship, Citron.

Not Citron...Citrus!

Dean, Citrus is correct. I'm sorry to hear he died, didn't know. Ed Moses died a week or two ago. He was still making paintings like a thirty year old. 91!
  10:50pm
Dean:

A name from the past, Moses! Sorry to hear this. Do you happen to know the work of Lawrence Weschler, an author who chronicles, inter alia, art scenes in LA and NY, e.g., his book about Hockney? I work pretty closely with his brother.

Would this brother, Ray perhaps, know a "geezerette"? Was that your moniker in HS? If so, you were cool beyond words.

Yes! Ren is a fan of a museum or art collection in Marfa! I think we've been around this block before, LD.

I can describe a context in which bass clarinet is not necessarily welcome. I played one, briefly, '73-'74, when the guy who formerly played it in our junior high school orchestra moved on to high school. Fair warning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Little Danny:

Hahaha. I want those demo tapes!

I've read it's an incredibly difficult instrument. Thoughts?
Avatar 11:20pm
geezerette:

gorgeous. great piano too.
Avatar 11:20pm
still b/p:

The Fielding is nice. I like how it's recorded.
  11:23pm
Dean:

I don't recall thinking so. Clarinet, yes, due to embouchure demands, and since fingering shifted from octave to octave, it was easy to move to tenor saxophone, which I also "played." The issue for me, at 14YO, was the size of the bass clarinet. I felt like it towered over me.

Recently played "Peace Piece" off the 1971 Columbia Bill Evans album. That track, and Jack Wilkins' "Red Clay," pretty much turned me on to jazz.
Avatar 11:25pm
geezerette:

'Peace Piece", this recording, a favorite. Love Bill Evans.
  11:26pm
Dean:

Wait, now I'm confused. "Peace Piece" does not appear on that Columbia album! Yet I distinctly recall hearing it on the radio mid-'70s. So much for my memory... But I did recently play the track off of a CD compilation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Little Danny:

"Peace Piece" is late '50s and I believe Evans only did it one time
Avatar 11:27pm
geezerette:

Always want my paintings to look like this sounds.
  11:27pm
Dean:

Perhaps I heard this Everybody Digs track, but grabbed the first BE LP I could find, the Columbia one.
  11:33pm
Dean:

Ah! I played Jean-Yves Thibaudet's tribute on "Conversations with..."!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Little Danny:

@Dean: That makes sense. Also, Evans apparently played it once and one once - in any context
  11:39pm
Dean:

Memory is so strange, particularly when you're not paying attention. I know (97%) I heard "Peace Piece" on radio in the mid-'70s. I know (99%) I bought the '71 Columbia album, and over time many, many more. Some of it all got squished into a discrete event.
